Brake Fluid Bleed/Flush (IDB) (Maintenance)

Note
This procedure bleeds the brakes on 2025+ Model Y manufactured in the United States. To bleed the brakes on vehicles manufactured outside of the United States, see Brake Fluid Bleed/Flush (DPB) (Maintenance).

Equipment:
  • 1080579-00-A - Pneumatic Brake Bleeder
  • 1080578-00-B - Brake Bleed Adapter M3/Y
CAUTION
Brake fluid dissolves paint. Have clean towels and plenty of water standing by to wash spilled brake fluid off painted surfaces.
Note
This procedures can consume at least 3 liters of brake fluid
Note
Dispose of used brake fluid in a manner consistent with local environmental codes.
Note
Check the service history of the vehicle to determine which type of brake fluid the brake system is filled with.
  1. Raise and support vehicle
    Note
    Ensure vehicle is not charging, Remove charging cable if it's plugged in
  2. Open LH front door
  3. Lower LH front window
  4. Open hood
  5. Remove rear apron
    Note
    16x trim clips, 3x location pins, 2x clips
  6. Remove LH front wheel cap
    Note
    1x cap, Use tool to gently pull the center wheel cap to release the clips, Wheels may be equipped with different caps
  7. Loosen LH front wheel nuts
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  8. Remove RH front wheel cap
    Note
    1x cap, Use tool to gently pull the center wheel cap to release the clips, Wheels may be equipped with different caps
  9. Loosen RH front wheel nuts
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  10. Remove LH rear wheel cap
    Note
    5x spring clips, 1x center ring, Use plastic trim tool to release spring clips in sequence then remove wheel cap
  11. Loosen LH rear wheel nuts
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  12. Remove RH rear wheel cap
    Note
    5x spring clips, 1x center ring, Use plastic trim tool to release spring clips in sequence then remove wheel cap
  13. Loosen RH rear wheel nuts
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  14. Raise vehicle partially and lower lift onto locks
    Note
    Set vehicle to a comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side
  15. Remove LH front wheel
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  16. Remove LH rear wheel
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  17. Remove RH front wheel
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  18. Remove RH rear wheel
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  19. Lower vehicle partially and set onto locks
    Note
    Raise lift off locks, Then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered, Set vehicle to comfortable working height
  20. Run ODIN routine PROC_ICE_X_ENTER-SERVICE-MODE-PLUSvia Toolbox:(link)
  21. Clean area around brake fluid reservoir and remove brake reservoir cap
  22. Fill brake bleeder reservoir to full level
  23. Top off brake fluid reservoir
    Note
    Top off brake fluid as needed
  24. Install pressure bleeder adapter onto reservoir
  25. Setup brake bleeder
    Note
    Connect power supply to bleeder and turn on the power to set pressure to 30 psi, Attach the brake reservoir hose to the brake adapter at this time
  26. Remove LH front caliper bleed valve covers then install fluid catcher to inner bleed valve
    Note
    2x covers
  27. Run ODIN routine
  28. Remove fluid catcher and torque LH front caliper bleed valves
    Note
    2x bleed valves, 11mm, 18.5 Nm, 2x covers, Install covers when torqued
  29. Remove RH front caliper bleed valve covers then install fluid catcher to inner bleed valve
    Note
    2x covers
  30. Run ODIN routine
  31. Remove fluid catcher then torque RH front caliper bleed valve
    Note
    2x bleed valves, 11mm, 18.5 Nm, 2x covers, Install covers when torqued
  32. Remove LH rear caliper bleed valve cover then install fluid catcher
    Note
    1x cover
  33. Run ODIN routine PROC_ESP_FRONT-R-REAR-L_BRAKE-BLEEDvia Service Mode:Chassis ➜ Brakes ➜ Brake Bleed FR-RLvia Toolbox:(link)
  34. Remove fluid catcher then torque LH rear caliper bleed valve
    Note
    1x cover, 1x bleed valve, Base: 11mm, 10 Nm, Install cover when torqued
  35. Remove RH rear caliper bleed valve cover then install fluid catcher
    Note
    1x cover
  36. Run ODIN routine
  37. Remove fluid catcher then torque RH rear caliper bleed valve
    Note
    1x cover, 1x bleeding valve, Base: 11mm, 10 Nm, Install cover when torqued
  38. Turn off and remove pressure brake bleeder kit from vehicle
  39. Check brake fluid level
    Note
    Top off if necessary
  40. Install service brake reservoir cap
  41. Pump brake pedal a few times to ensure brake pedal feels normal
  42. Bleed Internal Circuits
    Note
    Select Chassis > Procedures > RCU Post Replacement > Bleed Internal Circuits
  43. Perform RCU Corner Stiffness Test
    Note
    Select Chassis > Procedures > RCU Post Replacement > Corner Stiffness Test, Click Run then follow on screen instructions
  44. Remove diagnostic cable from port to disconnect toolbox from vehicle
  45. Run ODIN routine PROC_ICE_X_EXIT-SERVICE-MODE-PLUSvia Toolbox:(link)
  46. Raise vehicle partially and lower lift onto locks
    Note
    Set vehicle to a comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side
  47. Install LH front wheel
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm, Start lug nuts by hand before using power tool
  48. Install RH front wheel
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm, Start lug nuts by hand before using power tool
  49. Install LH rear wheel
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm, Start lug nuts by hand before using power tool
  50. Install RH rear wheel
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm, Start lug nuts by hand before using power tool
  51. Lower vehicle until tires are touching ground
    Note
    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered
  52. Torque LH front wheel nuts
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  53. Install LH front wheel cap
    Note
    1x cap, Align valve stem with wheel cap cavity, Wheels may be equipped with different caps
  54. Torque RH front wheel nuts
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  55. Install RH front wheel cap
    Note
    1x cap, Align valve stem with wheel cap cavity, Wheels may be equipped with different caps
  56. Torque LH rear wheel nuts
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  57. Install LH rear wheel cap
    Note
    5x spring clips, 1x center ring, Align the valve stem, then slightly press the cap to engage the clips, Make sure the center ring is properly seated
  58. Torque RH rear wheel nuts
    Note
    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  59. Install RH rear wheel cap
    Note
    5x spring clips, 1x center ring, Align the valve stem, then slightly press the cap to engage the clips, Make sure the center ring is properly seated
  60. Lower vehicle fully
    Note
    Raise lift off locks, Then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered
  61. Install rear apron
    Note
    16x trim clips, 3x location pins, 2x clips, Replace any missing or damaged clips, Ensure pyrotechnic hood actuators are aligned with openings in apron
  62. Close hood
  63. Raise LH front window
  64. Close LH front door
  65. Remove vehicle from lift
    Note
    Lower rack arms fully and remove from under vehicle
  66. Perform a road test
    Note
    Ensure proper brake pedal feel and performance Add correction code 00040100 as needed
