Brake Fluid Bleed/Flush (IDB) (Maintenance)

Note
This procedure bleeds the brakes on 2025+ Model Y manufactured in the United States. To bleed the brakes on vehicles manufactured outside of the United States, see Brake Fluid Bleed/Flush (Advanced) (Maintenance).

Equipment:
  • 1080579-00-A - Pneumatic Brake Bleeder
  • 1080578-00-B - Brake Bleed Adapter M3/Y
CAUTION
Brake fluid dissolves paint. Have clean towels and plenty of water standing by to wash spilled brake fluid off painted surfaces.
Note
This procedures can consume at least 3 liters of brake fluid
Note
Dispose of used brake fluid in a manner consistent with local environmental codes.
Note
Check the service history of the vehicle to determine which type of brake fluid the brake system is filled with.

Procedure

  1. Review the bleeder service tool profile.
  2. Place the vehicle on the 2-post lift.
    Tip
    Ensure the vehicle is not charging.
  3. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove all four wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  5. Lower the vehicle to a working height.
  6. Locally connect a laptop with Toolbox to the vehicle. See Toolbox (Connect and Disconnect).
  7. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir breather cap and remove the cap.
  8. Add clean brake fluid to the full level in the bleeder reservoir.
  9. Add clean brake fluid to the MAX level in the reservoir.
  10. Install the pressure bleeder adapter onto the vehicle brake reservoir.
  11. Connect power supply to the bleeder tool, and then turn the bleeder tool on.
  12. Set the brake bleed reservoir pressure to 30 PSI, and then attach the brake bleed reservoir to the brake bleed adapter.
  13. Bleed the LH front caliper.
    1. Remove the LH front caliper bleed valve covers (x2).
    2. Install the fluid catcher to the inner bleed valve, open the inner valve for 15 seconds to bleed the caliper, then close the valve.
    3. Install the fluid catcher to the outer bleed valve, open the outer valve for 15 seconds to bleed the caliper, then close the valve.
    4. Remove the fluid catcher, then torque the LH front caliper inner and outer bleed valves, and install the covers (x2).
      18.5 Nm (13.6 lbs-ft)
      Tip
      Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
      • 11 mm socket
  14. Repeat step 13 for the LH rear caliper, RH front caliper, and RH rear caliper.
  15. Turn off and remove the pressure brake bleeder kit from the vehicle.
  16. Check the brake fluid level and top off as necessary.
  17. Install the service brake reservoir cap.
  18. Press the brake pedal several times to verify proper feel and action.
  19. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Chassis > Procedures > RCU Post Replacement > Bleed Internal Circuits, click Run and allow the routine to complete.
  20. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Chassis > Procedures > RCU Post Replacement > Corner Stiffness Test, click Run and allow the routine to complete.
  21. Disconnect the laptop.
  22. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  23. Install all four wheels and lower the vehicle. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  24. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  25. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  26. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
  27. Perform a road test to make sure there is proper pedal feel and brake performance.
    Note
    Add test drive correction code 00040100 as a separate activity to the Service Visit.
