Reuse

Remove

  1. Remove the LH anr RH tie rods. See TIE ROD OUTER - LEFT HAND (Remove and Replace).
  2. Disconnect the LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  3. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  4. Release the clips (x3) that attach the steering gear harness to the underhood storage unit reinforcement bracket.
  5. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the underhood storage unit reinforcement bracket to the cooling fan, and then slide the bracket forward to remove it from the vehicle.

    • External Torx Plus EP14
  6. Position the fan assembly away from the steering gear.

    Note
    Use bungee cord to lift radiator away from the steering gear to gain clearance for removal and installation.
  7. Release the connector locks, disconnect the steering gear motor connectors (x4).
  8. Release the front harness clip that attaches the steering wheel harness to the front subframe, and move the harness aside.
  9. Turn the steering wheel fully to the right.
  10. Using the steering wheel holder, lock the steering wheel into position.
  11. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the steering column to the steering gear assembly.

    • 13 mm deep socket
  12. Slide the electric steering column upward to remove it from the steering gear assembly.
  13. Remove the inner bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  14. Remove the outer bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  15. With assistance, slide the steering rack assembly fully towards the RH side of the vehicle, and then remove it from the vehicle.

    CAUTION
    Be careful around the AC lines and the superbottle.

    Note
    Carefully slide the steering gear assembly to the RH side, and then maneuver the LH side of the steering gear assembly up and out of the frunk. Then, rotate the steering gear approximately 90 degrees towards the front of the vehicle to avoid interference between the steering gear module and cooling fan module.

Install

  1. Install the new steering gear assembly into the vehicle.

    Do not damage other components.

    Note
    Install the steering gear assembly through the underhood storage unit opening. Install the RH side of the steering gear assembly into frunk area first, and then slide the LH side of the steering gear assembly into the vehicle.
  2. Loosely install the outer bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  3. Loosely install the inner bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  4. Torque the inner bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.
    75 Nm (55.3 lbs-ft)

  5. Torque the outer bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.
    47 Nm (34.7 lbs-ft)

    • 15 mm socket
  6. Install the clip that attaches the steering gear harness to the front subframe.
  7. Connect the steering gear assembly connectors (x4).
  8. Slide the electric steering column downward to install it to the steering gear assembly.
  9. Install a new bolt that attaches the steering column to the steering gear assembly.
    18 Nm (13.3 lbs-ft)

  10. Release the bungee cord to place the radiator assembly back to the normal position.
  11. Position the underhood storage unit reinforcement bracket to the cooling fan, and then install the bolts (x2) that attach the underhood storage unit reinforcement bracket to the cooling fan.
    46.5 Nm (34.3 lbs-ft)

  12. Install the clips (x3) that attach the steering gear harness to the underhood storage unit reinforcement bracket.
  13. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  14. Connect the LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  15. Remove the steering wheel holder.
  16. Turn the steering wheel to the center position.
  17. Install the LH and RH tie rods. See TIE ROD OUTER - LEFT HAND (Remove and Replace).
  18. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
