Electrical Steering Column - LHD (Remove and Replace)

Reuse

Remove

  1. Remove the steering column upper gap hider from the steering column. See Instrument Panel Steering Column Upper Gap Hider (Remove and Replace).
  2. Remove the LH knee air bag. See Knee Airbag - LH (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the steering column control module. See Steering Column Control Module (Remove and Install).
  4. Disconnect the IP harness connector from the electronic steering column.
  5. Release the steering shaft boot from the bulkhead and pull it into the vehicle.

    Release from one point, then work the boot off of the bulkhead.
  6. Remove the bolt that secures the steering gear assembly to the electric steering column.

    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  7. Slide the electric steering column upward to remove it from the steering gear assembly.

    Wiggle or use a dead blow hammer to help separate as needed.
  8. Remove the that secure the securing steering securing steering column to the cross car beam.

    • 13 mm deep socket
    • 3/8 inch ratchet with rotary disc changeover RTCH-REV-3/8IN-72TEETH-L175MM ZEBRA
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
  9. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.

Install

  1. Position the steering column through the instrument panel and into place for installation.
  2. Install the lower nuts (x2) that secure the steering column to the cross car beam.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)

    Note
    Make sure that the steering column control module is properly seated.
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • 3/8 inch ratchet with rotary disc changeover RTCH-REV-3/8IN-72TEETH-L175MM ZEBRA
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
  3. Slide the intermediate shaft assembly downward to install it onto the steering gear assembly.
  4. Install the bolt that secures the intermediate shaft assembly to the steering gear assembly.
    18 Nm (13.3 lbs-ft)

    Note
    Make sure that the steering column control module is properly seated.
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  5. Secure the steering shaft boot into position on the bulkhead.
  6. Connect the IP harness connector to the electronic steering column.
  7. Install the steering column control module. See Steering Column Control Module (Remove and Install).
  8. Install steering column upper gap hider to steering column. See Instrument Panel Steering Column Upper Gap Hider (Remove and Replace).
  9. Install the LH knee air bag. See Knee Airbag - LH (Remove and Replace).
  10. Run PROC_STEERING_COLUMN_CALIBRATIONvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Chassis ➜ Steering ➜ Calibrate Steering Column.
  11. Adjust the steering column back to its original position.
