Pipe - Brake - Master Cylinder To RCU (IDB) (Remove and Replace)

CAUTION
Brake fluid dissolves paint. Have clean towels and plenty of water standing by to wash spilled brake fluid off painted surfaces.
Note
Dispose of used brake fluid in a manner consistent with local environmental codes.

Reuse

Remove

  1. Place the vehicle on the 2-post lift.
    Tip
    Ensure the vehicle is not charging.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  3. Lock the steering wheel into center position.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 1090880-00-A - STEERING WHEEL HOLDER STD W/ HUNTER ALIGNMENT EQUIP
  4. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove the LV battery. See LV Battery (Remove and Install).
  6. Remove all the four wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  7. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the steering column to the steering gear assembly.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm deep socket
  9. Slide the steering column upward to disconnect it from the steering gear assembly.
  10. Position a fluid catcher underneath the front of vehicle.
  11. Position protective fender cover over the fan shroud.
  12. Double-pull the red tab to disconnect the HVIL connector.
  13. Disconnect the A/C compressor logic connector.
  14. Remove the clip that attaches the harness to the HV harness bracket.
  15. Remove the A/C compressor ground strap bolt.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 socket
  16. Remove the tree clip that attaches the radiator inlet hose to the A/C compressor bracket.
  17. Remove the retaining clips (x5) that attach the A/C compressor HV harness to the shock tower support brace.
    Note
    Pull upward on the clips to assist with removal. Do not pull on the HV cable.
    Note
    Discard the damaged clips.
  18. Remove the clips (x4) that attach the coolant hose to the A/C compressor bracket.
  19. With assistance supporting the compressor, remove the bolts (x2) that attach the compressor to the shock tower brace.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 15 mm deep socket
  20. Move the compressor and bracket away from the shock tower brace and set them aside.
    Note
    Carefully move the compressor and bracket towards the front of the vehicle.
  21. Disconnect the RCU connector.
    Note
    Release the red locking tab and then press the black release tab and rotate the lever upward to disconnect.
  22. Release the RCU connector harness from the clip.
  23. Place absorbent material underneath the brake lines and the brake fluid reservoir to catch any fluid lost.
  24. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir and remove the brake reservoir cap.
  25. Remove the nuts (x2) that attach the master cylinder secondary and primary pipes to the brake booster.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 12 mm 6-point flare nut wrench
    • 12 mm 6-point flare nut crowfoot socket (mount at 90 degrees)
  26. Remove the nuts (x2) that attach the master cylinder secondary and primary pipes to the RCU.
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 12 mm 6-point flare nut wrench
    • 12 mm 6-point flare nut crowfoot socket (mount at 90 degrees)
  27. Release the clip that attaches the master cylinder brake pipes to the rear of the RCU bracket.
    Note
    Do not bend the pipes.
  28. Remove the master cylinder brake pipes from the clips (x2).
    Note
    Do not bend the pipes.

Replace

  1. Install the master cylinder brake pipes into the clips (x2).
    Note
    Do not bend the pipes.
  2. Install the clip that attaches the master cylinder brake pipes to the rear of the RCU bracket.
  3. Install the nuts (x2) that attach the master cylinder primary and secondary pipes to the RCU.
    18 Nm (13.3 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 12 mm 6-point flare nut wrench
    • 12 mm 6-point flare nut crowfoot socket (mount at 90 degrees)
  4. Install the nuts (x2) that attach the master cylinder primary and secondary pipes to the brake booster.
    16 Nm (11.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 12 mm 6-point flare nut wrench
    • 12 mm 6-point flare nut crowfoot socket (mount at 90 degrees)
  5. Install the RCU connector harness into the clip.
  6. Rotate the lever downward and secure the red locking tab to connect the RCU connector.
  7. With assistance, place the compressor and bracket back to its original position, and then install the bolts (x2) that attach the compressor to the shock tower brace.
    31 Nm (22.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 15 mm deep socket
  8. Install the tree clips (x4) that attach the coolant hose to the A/C compressor bracket.
  9. Install the retaining clips (x5) that attach the A/C compressor HV harness to the shock tower brace.
    Note
    Visually inspect the clips and replace the damaged ones.
  10. Install the tree clip that attaches the radiator inlet hose to the A/C compressor bracket.
  11. Install the A/C compressor ground strap bolt.
    7 Nm (5.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 socket
  12. Install the clip that attaches the harness to the HV harness bracket.
  13. Connect the A/C compressor logic connector.
  14. Connect the HVIL connector.
  15. Install the LV battery. See LV Battery (Remove and Install).
  16. Remove the protective fender cover over the fan shroud.
  17. Remove the fluid catcher from underneath the vehicle.
  18. Slide the steering column downward to connect it to the steering gear assembly.
    Note
    Ensure the intermediate shaft is aligned and fully seated.
  19. Install a new bolt (1111523-00-A) that attaches the steering column to the steering gear assembly.
    18 Nm (13.3 lbs-ft)
    Tip
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm deep socket
  20. Locally connect a laptop with Toolbox to the vehicle. See Toolbox (Connect and Disconnect).
  21. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir breather cap and remove the cap.
  22. Add clean brake fluid to the full level in the bleeder reservoir.
  23. Add clean brake fluid to the MAX level in the reservoir.
  24. Install the pressure bleeder adapter onto the vehicle brake reservoir.
  25. Connect power supply to the bleeder tool, and then turn the bleeder tool on.
  26. Set the brake bleed reservoir pressure to 30 PSI, and then attach the brake bleed reservoir to the brake bleed adapter.
  27. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Chassis > Procedures > RCU Post Replacement > Manual Caliper Bleeding, click Ok after reading Manual Caliper Bleeding instruction, then proceed with caliper bleeding operation.
  28. Bleed the LH front caliper.
    1. Remove the LH front caliper bleed valve covers (x2).
    2. Install the fluid catcher to the inner bleed valve, open the inner valve for 15 seconds to bleed the caliper, then close the valve.
    3. Install the fluid catcher to the outer bleed valve, open the outer valve for 15 seconds to bleed the caliper, then close the valve.
    4. Remove the fluid catcher, then torque the LH front caliper inner and outer bleed valves, and install the covers (x2).
      18.5 Nm (13.6 lbs-ft)
      Tip
      Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
      • 11 mm socket
  29. Repeat step 28 for the RH front caliper.
  30. Turn off and remove the pressure brake bleeder kit from the vehicle.
  31. Check the brake fluid level and top off as necessary.
  32. Install the service brake reservoir cap.
  33. Press the brake pedal several times to verify proper feel and action.
  34. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Chassis > Procedures > RCU Post Replacement > Corner Stiffness Test, click Run and allow the routine to complete.
  35. Disconnect the laptop.
  36. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  37. Install the front aero shield panel. See Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  38. Install all the four wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  39. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  40. Remove the steering wheel holder.
  41. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  42. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
  43. Perform one of the following:
    • If the brake pads were not replaced in this procedure, perform a road test using a series of aggressive stops and make sure that there is proper brake pedal feel and brake performance.
      Note
      Add test drive correction code 00040100 as a separate activity to the Service Visit.
    • If the brake pads were replaced in this procedure, perform the brake pad burnishing procedure. See Brake Pads - Burnishing.
