During installation of the brake caliper, make sure that the flexible brake hose is not twisted and can bend forward. The flexible brake hose must not make contact with the wheel arch liner when the vehicle is lowered.

Remove

  1. Put the vehicle on a 2-post lift.

    Make sure that the vehicle is not charging.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the window.
  3. Enable the EPB Service Mode.
    1. Enable Service Mode. See Service Mode.
    2. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
    3. While holding the brake pedal, tap the Service Mode "wrench" at the bottom of the touchscreen UI, and then tap Chassis > Brakes > EPB Service Mode, select Both in the EPB Selection drop down list, and select Start in the Action Selection drop down list. Click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  4. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  5. Put absorbent material underneath the brake fluid reservoir area.
  6. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir and remove the brake reservoir cap.
  7. Remove the LH and RH rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  8. Performance models only: remove the bolt that attaches the rear caliper logo plate to the rear caliper.
  9. Disconnect the LH rear EPB caliper connector.
  10. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear EPB harness bracket to the LH rear caliper.

  11. Remove the LH rear brake hose. See Brake Hose - Rear - LH - Base (Remove and Replace).
  12. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the LH rear brake caliper bracket.

    • Combination Wrench 12pt 17mm
  13. Remove the brake pads from the LH rear brake caliper bracket.
  14. Remove and clean the LH rear brake caliper bracket abutment clips (x4) with brake cleaner.
  15. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the rear brake caliper bracket to the knuckle.

  16. Remove the sticky shim from the outer brake pad.

    Note
    Use brake cleaner to resolve any adhesive from the back of the brake pad.
  17. Clean the back side of the inner brake pad with brake cleaner.

Install

Note
Do not apply brake grease to the brake pad or brake caliper. 2025+ Model Y brakes do not require the application of brake grease.
  1. Install new bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper bracket to the knuckle.
    83 Nm (61.2 lbs-ft)

    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 3/8 in to ½ in adapter
    • External Torx E18
    • Breaker bar
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  2. Cut 2 pieces of sticky shim to 4 cm x 5 cm.
  3. Install the sticky shims to the outer brake pad.

    Note
    Cut out any excess material and make sure that the double sided tape mates onto the brake pad.
  4. Peel of the backing from the sticky shim on the outer brake pad.
  5. Install the LH rear brake pads onto the LH rear brake caliper bracket.
  6. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the LH rear brake caliper bracket.
    26.5 Nm (19.5 lbs-ft)

  7. Install the LH rear brake hose. See Brake Hose - Rear - LH - Base (Remove and Replace).

    Upon installation, make sure that the flexible brake hose is not twisted and can bend forward. The flexible brake hose must not make contact with the wheel arch liner when the vehicle is lowered.
  8. Install the bolt that attaches the LH rear EPB harness bracket to the LH rear caliper.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

  9. Connect the LH rear EPB caliper connector.
  10. Performance models only: install the bolt that attaches the rear caliper logo plate to the rear caliper.
    9 Nm (6.6 lbs-ft)
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 5 mm hex
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  11. Remove the oil drain from underneath the LH rear brake hose area.
  12. Lower the vehicle to a comfortable working height and set the lift onto locks.
  13. Perform a brake fluid bleed on the LH rear brake. See Brake Fluid Bleed - One Caliper (Maintenance).
  14. Perform the corner stiffness test: run TEST-SELF_BRAKE_X_DPB-ESP-CORNER-STIFFNESS-TESTvia Service Mode Plus:
    • chassis ➜ DPB Post Replacement ➜ Corner Stiffness Test
    • chassis ➜ ESP Post Replacement ➜ Corner Stiffness Test

  15. Exit EPB Service Mode: on the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Chassis > Brakes > EPB Service Mode, select Both in the EPB Selection dropping list, and select Stop in the Action Selection dropping list. Click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  16. Install the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  17. Install the rear apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  18. Perform a test drive and make sure that proper brake pedal feel and brake performance is achieved.
