FRONT SUBFRAME (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Inspect the vehicle for abnormal tire wear that might indicate the need for a wheel alignment, and note any findings.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Stands.
  3. Open LH door and lower LH window.
  4. Power off the vehicle via the touchscreen.
  5. Using the steering wheel holder, lock the steering wheel into position.
  6. Remove the HEPA filter assembly. See SERVICE KIT - HEPA AND CARBON FILTERS (Remove and Replace).
  7. Disconnect the LV battery. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  8. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  9. Disconnect the steering gear motor connectors (x2).
  10. Remove the front fascia assembly. See FRONT FASCIA (Remove and Install).
  11. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH front tie rod end to the LH front suspension knuckle, and repeat this on the right of the vehicle.

  12. Remove the bolts (x4) that attach the front end carrier to the LH and RH subframe crash cans.

  13. Lower the vehicle to a comfortable working height and set the lift onto locks.
  14. Remove the front stabilizer bar. See Front Stabilizer Bar and Links - Front Stabilizer bar (Remove and Replace).
  15. Place a ½ ton economy transmission jack under the LH front knuckle.
  16. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH front lower compliance link to the front subframe.

  17. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH front lower lateral link to the strut.

  18. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front lower lateral link to the front subframe.

  19. Remove the LH lateral link and compliance link from the front subframe, and then move them aside.

    Note
    Pull the knuckle outward to remove compliance link from subframe; slowly lower the jack and then remove the jack under the knuckle.
  20. Repeat the step 15through step 19 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  21. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the steering column to the steering gear assembly.

    • Socket 1/4in Dr. 6pt. Std. x 13mm
  22. Slide the electric steering column upward to remove it from the steering gear assembly.
  23. Remove the clip that attaches the steering gear harness to the front subframe.
  24. Remove the clip that attaches the power train coolant hose to the front subframe.
  25. Release the connector locks, and then disconnect the logic connectors (x2) below the steering gear.
  26. Remove and discard the larger bolts (x2) that attach the rear portion of the front subframe to the body.

    • SKT, 1/2" DR, SHALLOW, 21MM - 1115108-00-B
    • Breaker bar
    • Torque wrench with angle measurement
  27. Position the front subframe lifting tool beneath the front subframe.
  28. Attach an air hose to the front subframe lifting tool.
  29. With an assistant, raise the front subframe lifting tool to support the front subframe.
  30. Loop the straps over the front subframe, hook the ends of the straps to the metal rings, and then pull the straps tight to restrain the subframe to the front subframe lifting tool.
  31. Remove and discard the smaller bolts (x2) that attach the rear portion of the front subframe to the body.

  32. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the front portion of the front subframe to the body.

  34. With assistance, carefully lower the subframe assembly from the vehicle.
  35. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front subframe crash can to the front subframe.

  37. Remove the inner bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  38. Remove the outer bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  39. Remove the steering gear assembly from the front subframe.
  40. With assistance, release the straps (x3) and then remove the front subframe from subframe lifting tool.

Install

  1. With assistance, position the front subframe to the subframe lifting tool.

    Make sure the guides align.
  2. Loop the straps over the front subframe, hook the ends of the straps to the metal rings, and then pull the straps tight to restrain the subframe to the front subframe lifting tool.
  3. Position the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.
  4. Loosely install the outer bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  5. Loosely install the inner bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  6. Torque the inner bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.
    75 Nm (55.3 lbs-ft)

  8. Loosely install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front subframe crash can assembly to the front subframe.
  9. Loosely install bolts (x2) that attach the RH front subframe crash can assembly to the front subframe.
  10. With the help of an assistant, move the subframe lifting tool and the subframe under the vehicle.
  11. Loosely install new bolts (x2) that attach the middle portion of the front subframe to the body.
  12. Loosely install new bolts (x2) that attach the front portion of the front subframe to the body.
  13. Loosely install smaller bolts (x2) that attach the rear portion of the front subframe to the body.
  14. Loosely install new the larger bolts (x2) that attach the rear portion of the front subframe to the body.
  15. Torque the bolts (x2) that attach the middle portion of the front subframe to the body.
    50 Nm (36.9 lbs-ft)

  20. Tighten the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front subframe crash can to the front subframe.

  22. Release the straps (x3) that attach the front subframe to the subframe lifting tool, and then lower the subframe lifting tool.
  23. Disconnect the air hose from the front subframe lifting tool.
  24. Move the subframe lifting tool out from under the front subframe.
  25. Install the clip that attaches the power train coolant hose to the front subframe.
  26. Install the clip that attaches the steering gear harness to the front subframe.
  27. Connect the logic connectors (x2) below the steering gear.
  28. Slide the electric steering column downward to install it to the steering gear assembly.
  29. Install a new bolt that attaches the steering column to the steering gear assembly.
    18 Nm (13.3 lbs-ft)

  30. Align the LH front compliance link and lateral link to the front subframe.

    Use ½ ton economy transmission jack to support the LH front knuckle to assist installation.
  31. With assistance, position the LH front lower compliance link to the front subframe, and then install the bolt and nut that attach the LH front lower compliance link to the front subframe.
    115 Nm (84.8 lbs-ft)

  32. Hand tighten new bolts (x2) that attach the LH front lower lateral link to the front subframe.
  33. Hand tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH strut to the LH front lower lateral link.
  34. Remove the jack from the LH front knuckle.
  35. Repeat step 30 through step 34 for the right of the vehicle.
  36. Lower the vehicle to a comfortable working height and set the lift onto locks.
  37. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front rotor to the LH front hub.

  38. Install the hub jack adapter onto the LH front hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts (x5).
  39. Position and raise the underhoist stand to simulate the suspension at ride height.
  40. Measure the distance between the bottom of the fender and the center of the front axle to make sure that the front suspension is set to ride height. The distance should measure 420mm.
  41. Tighten new bolts (x2) that attach the LH front lower lateral link to the front subframe.
    135 Nm (99.6 lbs-ft)

  42. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH front lower lateral link to the strut.
    106 Nm (78.2 lbs-ft)

  43. Remove the underhoist stand from underneath the LH front suspension.
  44. Remove the lug nuts (x5) that attach the hub jack adapter, and then remove the hub jack adapter from the vehicle.
  45. Install the bolt that attaches the LH front rotor to the LH front hub.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

  46. Repeat step 37 through step 45 on the right of the vehicle.
  47. Install a new nut that attaches the LH front tie rod end to the LH front suspension knuckle, and then repeat this on the right of the vehicle.
    180 Nm (132.7 lbs-ft)

  48. Install the front stabilizer bar. See Front Stabilizer Bar and Links - Front Stabilizer bar (Remove and Replace).
  49. Install the front fascia assembly. See FRONT FASCIA (Remove and Install).
  50. Connect the steering gear motor connectors (x2).
  51. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  52. Connect the LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  53. Install the HEPA filter assembly. See SERVICE KIT - HEPA AND CARBON FILTERS (Remove and Replace).
  54. Remove the steering wheel holder.
  55. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  56. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
  57. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
