Fixed Roof Glass (Model Y Premium) (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Open all doors and lower all windows.
  2. Remove the parcel shelf. See Parcel Shelf (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the rear headliner panel. See Rear Headliner (Remove and Replace).
  4. Prepare WRD Spider 3 glass removal kit.
  5. Apply tape to the body surrounding the roof glass.
  6. Use a blade to separate the datums (x2) at the front center and the left rear of the roof glass.
    Note
    Slide the blade up against the datums and carefully separate the adhesive from windshield. Release the datums to aid in the cutting process.
  7. Loop nylon string through the wire starter.
  8. Apply protective shield at one rear corner of the roof glass.
  9. Insert the tool through the roof glass urethane at the rear corner.
    CAUTION
    Avoid damage to the painted surfaces.
  10. Pull the nylon string through.
    Note
    Ensure you pull enough nylon string through to wrap around the perimeter of the glass. Both ends of the nylon string can stay inside the vehicle interior and does not need to be pulled through completely.
  11. Route the nylon string around the glass.
    Note
    Make sure the nylon string is placed under the seals.
    CAUTION
    Do not damage the seals of the front windshield and the liftgate.
  12. Attach anchor point to the interior of the fixed roof glass assembly and secure the line.
  13. Install the nylon string onto the spider cutting tool.
    Note
    Follow the instructions on the spider tool. Feed the line through the opening of the cutting tool and tie a knot to secure in place. If spindle is not turned the proper direction, the cutting tool will be damaged.
  14. Secure the spider cutting tool to the interior side of the fixed roof glass.
    Note
    Note the orientation of the cutting line. Make sure the line warps over large pulley and holds at a 90 degree angle.
  15. Install an angle driver to an electric drill and set the drill clutch to 1.
    Warning
    Failure to set the drill clutch to 1 may result in serious injury.
  16. Use the drill to turn the spindle on the cutting tool. Begin cutting urethane around the glass.
    Warning
    Do not begin cutting the windshield without first setting the drill clutch to 1. Failure to do so may result in serious injury.
    Warning
    Wear appropriate eye and hand protection while cutting the glass assembly.
    CAUTION
    Place a plastic guard to protect the headliner assembly.
    CAUTION
    Take precaution to make sure the line goes above the datums and the roof brackets. If the line gets caught on the roof bracket then the line will break.
    Tip
    Use the headliner protector or a trim tool to apply upward pressure to the line as it cuts. Do not use your hands.
    Tip
    Move the cutting tool as needed while keeping the line close to a 90° angle. If the line gets stuck, try to pull it backwards in order release it from under the metal roof bracket or change the positions of the anchor and cutting tool.

  17. Remove the cutting tools and discard the used nylon string.
  18. With assistance, secure the suction cup tools (x4) to each corner of the roof glass, and then use the suction cups to remove the roof glass from vehicle.
  19. Use a scraper to remove the old urethane from the body.
    Note
    Make sure the remaining residual urethane is 1 mm or less in thickness.
  20. If the vehicle is equipped with datums, remove the broken datums.

Install

  1. With assistance, place the new roof glass on the support stand and prepare for installation.
    Note
    Remove any protective or adhesive covers.
    Note
    Newer roof glass may not include datums and can be installed directly.
  2. Attach the suction cups (x4) to the new roof glass.
  3. Use IPA wipes to wipe the urethane path on the body and the roof glass, and allow 1 minute to dry.
  4. Remove the tape from the body surrounding the roof glass.
  5. Apply urethane primer to the body and the roof glass along the urethane path, and allow 2 minutes to dry.
    Note
    If using Sika 258 sealant, use Sika special activator Pro as shown in the orange item in the picture.
  6. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane by cutting the tip of the urethane cartridge in a triangular shape approximately 12.5 mm wide and 20 mm tall.
  7. Apply the urethane to the body.
    Note
    Urethane should go around the inside of the roof bracket.
  8. With assistance, use the suction cups to position the roof glass onto the vehicle.
    Note
    If equipped, align the datums at front and rear of the glass to the body.
  9. Verify gap and flush of roof glass and adjust as needed.
    Note
  10. Press the glass onto the body once in position.
    Note
    Use sandbags if needed.
  11. Apply tape to secure the roof glass.
  12. Remove the suction cups from the roof glass.
  13. Install the rear headliner panel. See Rear Headliner (Remove and Replace).
  14. Install the parcel shelf. See Parcel Shelf (Remove and Replace).
  15. Raise all windows and close all doors.
  16. Remove the tapes that secure the roof glass to the vehicle once the urethane has cured.
    Note
    Park the vehicle indoors and follow the minimum departure time set by the adhesive manufacturer:
    • Dow Betaseal Express: at least 1 hour to cure (temperature -18℃ or higher)
    • Henkel/Sika: at least 8 hours to cure (best conditions: Temperature 23℃, relative humidity 50%)
    Note
    If necessary, paste the tape on the glass of the vehicle, press and fix, and inform the customer to remove the tape after 24 hours. At the same time, customers are advised to avoid driving at high speeds and avoid speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
  17. Enter Service Mode Plus. See Service Mode Plus.
  18. Select Service Mode Plus > Thermal > Actions > Thermal Configuration > roofGlassType. Select the configuration for the type of glass that was just installed.

  19. Exit Service Mode.
