Hinge - Liftgate (Model Y Standard) (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Fold 2nd row 60 and 40 seatbacks down.
  2. Partially remove LH trunk side trim.

    9x clips. Only release the upper section of the trim. Be careful to avoid straining the 12V socket harness at the rear of the trim. All clips and datums shown in the image are shown for clarity.
  3. Remove the LH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - RH (Model Y Standard) (Remove and Install).
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the RH side of the vehicle.
  5. Partially lower the headliner at the LH rear side.

    4x clips. Put an inflatable air bag between the headliner and the roof of the vehicle. Make sure that the airbag is away from the liftgate hinge bolts.
  6. Apply tape to the LH liftgate hinge location.

    This marks where the hinge should align during installation. Adhesive tape is also attached to the rear body of the hinge to prevent damage to the paint when removing the hinge.
  7. Support the liftgate.
  8. Put an inflatable air bag between the liftgate and the roof glass.

    The airbag is used to prevent the liftgate from directly pressing against the roof glass, causing damage to the roof glass.
  9. Release the LH upper power strut clip from the ball stud at the liftgate.

    Once released, put the power strut down on the door jamb.
  10. Remove the LH liftgate hinge bolts (x2) from the liftgate.
  11. Remove the inner side nut of the LH liftgate hinge.
  12. Apply tape to the LH side liftgate hinge body position
  13. Put a protective mat between the headliner and the roof.
  14. Cut the inner side bolt of the LH liftgate hinge.

    Note
    Cut 9 mm upwards from the bottom of the bolt, and do not apply too much force towards the end of the cut.
  15. Remove the outer side nut of the LH liftgate hinge.
  16. Remove the LH liftgate hinge from the body.

    Note
    First remove the inner bolt of the hinge from the body. Rotate the hinge clockwise to 30 degrees, then remove the outer bolt of the hinge from the body. Finally, remove the hinge from the body.

Install

  1. Remove the tape from the LH side liftgate hinge body.

    Clean area with IPA wipes if any debris is found.
  2. Remove the old spacers from the body.

    Be careful not to damage the vehicle's painted surfaces.
  3. lnstall the LH liftgate hinge onto the body.

    Note
    First, install the outer bolt of the hinge into the body. Then rotate the hinge counterclockwise by 30 degrees to install the inner bolt of the hinge.
  4. Install the nuts that attach the LH hinge hand tight to the body.
    24 Nm (17.7 lbs-ft)
  5. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH liftgate hinge to the liftgate hand-tight.

    2x bolts, 13mm, 24 Nm, Torque after later
  6. Install the LH liftgate power strut clip to the ball stud at the liftgate.

    Make sure that the spring clip is properly set.
  7. Remove the inflatable air bag from between the liftgate and the roof glass.
  8. Remove the liftgate support from the vehicle.
  9. Close the liftgate to check gap/flush

    Perform adjustment as necessary to the hinge bolts and trunk striker. Assistance is recommended.
  10. Open the liftgate.
  11. Torque the bolts that attach the LH liftgate hinge to the liftgate.
    24 Nm (17.7 lbs-ft)
  12. Torque the nuts that attach the LH liftgate hinge to the body.
    24 Nm (17.7 lbs-ft)
  13. Apply touch up paint to the fasteners that attach the LH liftgate hinge.

    Note
    Make sure to shake touch up paint before applying. Allow 1st coat to dry for 20 minutes before applying a 2nd coat (if necessary).
  14. Install the rear portion of the headliner into position and clip it into place.

    4x clip,s 4x location pins. Seat trunk seal to edge of trim. Replace any broken clips.
  15. Install LH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - RH (Model Y Standard) (Remove and Install).
  16. Install the LH trunk side trim.
  17. Repeat steps 15 and 16 on the RH side of the vehicle.
  18. Remove the masking tape used for marking the position of the LH liftgate hinge.
  19. Move 2nd row 40 and 60 seatback to the vertical position.
