Procedure

  1. Prepare the vehicle for raising. See Raise Vehicle - 2-Post Lift.

    CAUTION
    Make sure that the vehicle is not charging.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the window.
  3. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  4. Place absorbent material underneath the brake fluid reservoir area.
  5. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir and remove the brake reservoir cap.
  6. Remove the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  7. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.

    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 4 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  8. Remove the front brake caliper anti-rattle springs (x2).

    Note
    Use a plastic trim tool to avoid damaging the coating of the caliper.
  9. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the knuckle.

    • External Torx E18
    • Breaker bar
    • 3/8 in to ½ in adapter
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  10. Remove the LH front brake caliper and hang it off to a firm part beside with an S-hook.

    Preferentially use S-hook 1082171-10-A. If 1082171-10-A is not available, use 1082171-00-A instead.

    Note
    S-hook 1082171-10-A can only be hung on metal parts.
  11. Use the brake caliper spreader to spread the brake pads as wide as possible to push the piston into a position for easy installation.

  12. Remove the brake pads from the LH front brake caliper.

    Note
    Release the adhesive between the pads and the pistons with a trim tool.
  13. Clean the front brake caliper anti-rattle springs.

    Use a nylon brush and brake cleaner as needed. Allow 1 minute to dry after cleaning.
  14. Clean the LH front brake caliper.

  15. Use a plastic trim tool to remove the sticky shims from the front brake pads.
  16. Clean the front brake pads.

    Note
    Make sure pads are on a clean surface. Clean any debris with a hand brush. Clean the back side of the pads with IPA wipes, and allow 1 minute dry time.
  17. Apply sticky shims onto the backside of the brake pads.

    Note
    Cut the sticky shim to 5 cm x 5 cm and center it out on the back side of the pad's piston surface. Make sure that the double sided tape mates onto the brake pad.
  18. Apply an even layer of Silaramic lubricant onto the brake pad guide contact points.
  19. Remove the protective film from the sticky shims on the brake pads.
  20. Install the brake pads into the LH front brake caliper.
  21. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the knuckle.
    94 Nm (69.3 lbs-ft)

  22. Install the front brake caliper anti-rattle springs (x2).

    Note
    Take care not to damage the coating of the brake caliper, and make sure that the springs are fully installed.
  23. Install the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.

    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 4 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  24. Repeat steps 7 through 23 on the RH side of the vehicle.
  25. Install the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  26. Check the brake fluid reservoir and top off as necessary.
  27. Remove the absorbent material from underneath the brake fluid reservoir area.
  28. Pump the brake pedal a few times to seat the pads against the brake rotor until the brake pedal feels firm.
  29. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  30. Burnish the brakes. See Brake Pads - Burnishing.
