Rear Drive Inverter - 4DU (Remove and Replace)

Reuse

Remove

  1. Inspect the vehicle for abnormal tire wear that might indicate the need for a wheel alignment. Note any findings.
  2. Open all doors and lower all windows.
  3. Move both front seats forward.
  4. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox (Connect and Disconnect).
  5. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap High Voltage > Procedures > Rear Drive Inverter Replacement > Store Bootloader Data > Run to perform this routine.
  6. Tap Store Application Data > Run to perform this routine.
  7. Tap Start Fluid Fill/Drain > Run to perform this routine.
  8. Remove the diagnostic cable from the port to disconnect Toolbox from the vehicle.
  9. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2-Post Lift.
  10. Disable HV power. See Vehicle HV Disablement Procedure.
  11. Remove the RH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  12. Remove the rear aero shield. See Aero Shield - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  13. Remove the rear diffuser. See Diffuser - Rear Fascia (Remove and Replace).
  14. Remove the rear stabilizer bar. See Rear Stabilizer Bar and Links - Stabar - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  15. Remove the RH 12V subframe harness clip from the body.
  16. Remove the RH 12V subframe harness clip from the rear subframe brace.
  17. Remove the rear skid plate. See Skid Plate - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  18. Remove the LH mount assembly between rear drive unit and subframe. See Mount - LH - 4DU (Remove and Install).
  19. Mark LH rear and RH rear subframe bolts

  20. Remove the LH and RH shear plates. See Shear Plate - Rear Subframe - LH (Remove and Replace).
  21. Remove LH and RH rear bolts that attach the subframe to the body.

  22. Remove the rear subframe brace from the rear subframe.

    Warning
    Hold the brace with hands while removing, or there will be a risk of falling.
  23. Partially lower the rear subframe and drive unit assembly.

    Note
    Use caution while lowering subframe as multiple components are still attached. Do not overstrain components, the dampers and brake calipers are still connected. The subframe should be lowered approximately 8.25 cm (3.25 in). Assistance recommended.
  24. Support the center of the drive unit with a protective block.
  25. Remove the LH mount bolt that attaches the drive unit to the subframe.

    Note
    Use a pry tool to aid as needed. Take care not to damage the drive unit casting.
  26. Remove and discard the bolts (x3) that attach the LH mount assembly to the rear drive unit.
  27. Release the inverter to oil cooler hose from in between the LH motor mount.

    Note
    Plug the hose and hose connection at the inverter. Release the clip from in between the mount and the NVH cover. Completely release the clip. Use a flashlight and a pick. Note the images because the clearance is small. Release the hose from the inverter coupling and move it aside.
  28. Remove the LH mount assembly from between the rear drive unit and the subframe.
  29. Remove the clip that attaches the NVH cover to the drive unit, and then remove the cover from the drive unit.
  30. Put on an ESD wrist strap and attach it to the inverter housing.
  31. Remove the phase cover. See Cover- Phase Out - 4DU (Remove and Replace).
  32. Remove bolts securing the rear drive unit 3 phase cable for inverter and motor.

  34. Remove inverter from drive unit and drain coolant.

    CAUTION
    The inverter must be removed down between the drive unit and subframe. Discard the gasket after removal. Be careful not to damage the PCBA during removal.
  35. Place the drive inverter on ESD mat.

    Do not place inverter facing downwards on the circuit board or HV lugs.
  36. Remove ESD wrist strap from inverter housing.
  37. If the pyrotechnic fuse of the drive unit inverter has not been actuated, dispose of the drive unit inverter as hazardous material. If the pyrotechnic fuse has been actuated, follow the normal regulations for waste disposal.

    Note
    If Autodiag falsely indicated that the pyrotechnic fuse was actuated, but visual check confirms that it was not activated, list the serial number of the drive unit inverter in Autodiag using 'Report an Issue'.

Install

  1. Secure ESD strap to inverter housing.

    Clipping location can vary, as long as clip is making proper contact with metal housing.
  2. Clean mating surfaces of the phase lugs and inverter.
  3. Position the inverter with gasket to rear drive unit.

    Maneuver rear inverter into position, take caution when maneuvering between subframe do not damage the circuit board, make sure the 3 phase cables and guides align during installation, install new gasket.
  4. Hand-tighten the fasteners securing inverter to gearbox assembly.

  5. Torque fasteners securing inverter to gearbox assembly.
    12.5 Nm (9.2 lbs-ft)

  6. Install bolts securing the rear drive unit 3 phase cable for inverter and motor.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft) + 40 degrees

  7. Install the phase out cover to rear drive unit. See Cover- Phase Out - 4DU (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove ESD wrist strap from inverter.
  9. Install 4DU NVH cover.
  10. Install the LH mount assembly between rear drive unit and subframe. See Mount - LH - 4DU (Remove and Install).
  11. Perform an inverter air leak test. See Inverter Air Leak Test.
  12. Position the NVH cover to the drive unit, and then install the clip that attaches the NVH cover to the drive unit.
  13. Position the LH mount assembly in between the rear drive unit and the subframe.
  14. Install the inverter to oil cooler hose.

    Note
    Install hose and verify the hose is fully and properly attached. Perform a push-pull-push test. If coolant loss is more than 1 ltr, coolant vacuum fill is required.
  15. Install new bolts (x3) that attach the LH mount assembly to the rear drive unit.
    35 Nm (25.8 lbs-ft) + 55 degrees

  16. Install the LH mount bolt that attaches the drive unit to the subframe.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)

    Gently pry with a pry bar to facilitate bolt penetration as needed. Take care not to damage the drive unit casting.

  17. Remove the protective block from under the center of the drive unit.
  18. Raise the drive unit and subframe into position.
  19. Install the rear subframe brace to the rear subframe.
  20. Install both LH and RH rear bolts securing rear subframe to body hand tight.
  21. Install the LH and RH shear plates. See Shear Plate - Rear Subframe - LH (Remove and Replace).
  22. Position subframe to marked location.
  23. Mark LH rear and RH rear subframe bolts

  24. Torque bolt securing RH rear of subframe to body.
  25. Torque the larger bolt that attaches the LH shear plate to the vehicle, and then mark the bolt with a paint pen after torquing.
    125 Nm (92.2 lbs-ft)

  26. Torque the smaller bolts that attach the LH shear plate to the HV battery.
    64 Nm (47.2 lbs-ft)

  27. Lower rear subframe lifting tool from vehicle

    Verify yellow safety straps are removed from subframe
  28. Disconnect air supply from subframe lifting tool
  29. Remove subframe lifting tool from underneath vehicle
  30. Connect RDU HV cable to HV battery

    1x connector, Make sure the connector lock is 90 degrees from the connector before beginning to secure the connector, Use one hand to support the connector while other latching locking tab. Once installed, verify that the latch is not damaged and fully secured in the latched position
  31. Install nut securing RDU HV cable bracket to HV battery

  32. Install clip securing coolant hoses to RH shear plate

  33. Position coolant drain underneath RH rear of HV battery
  34. Remove plugs and connect RDU inverter inlet hose to rear of HV battery

    Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure the hose is fully seated. Do not wiggle the hose at the connection.
  35. Remove coolant drain container from underneath vehicle
  36. Install the HV battery rear skid plate enclosure. See Skid Plate - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  37. Install bolts securing rear stabilizer bar. See Rear Stabilizer Bar and Links - Stabar - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  38. Install the rear fascia. See Assembly - Fascia and Diffuser - Rear (Remove and Install).
  39. Perform a cooling system vacuum refill. See Cooling System - Vacuum Refill (Test/Adjust).
  40. Connect an LV maintainer. See LV Maintainer (Maintenance).
  41. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
  42. On the touchscreen, tap Service mode Plus High Voltage > Procedures > Rear Drive Inverter Replacement, and then allow the routine to complete.
  43. Select Stop Thermal Fill Drain, click Runto allow the routine to complete.
  44. Select Restore Bootloader Data, click Runto allow the routine to complete.
  45. Select CAN Redeploy, click Runto allow the routine to complete,then click Close.
  46. Select Restore Application Data, and then click Runto allow the routine to complete, then click Close.
  47. Select Coolant Air Purge, and then click Runto allow the routine to complete.
  48. Disconnect the LV maintainer. See LV Maintainer (Maintenance).
  49. Connect the LV battery power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect) (Modify).
  50. Inspect the coolant level, top off as necessary, and then install the coolant bottle cap.

    Ensure that the coolant level is at the "Max" line.
  51. Install the HEPA filter assembly See HEPA Filter Assembly (Remove and Replace).
  52. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  53. Select Thermal system Test , and then click Runto allow the routine to complete.
  54. Place stanchions around vehicle and set up a safety perimeter before performing resolver error learn.
  55. Select Resolver Error Learn, and then click Runto allow the routine to complete.
  56. Disable Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  57. Remove safety stanchions from around vehicle after resolver learn is completed.
  58. Lower vehicle fully.
  59. Raise all windows and close all doors.
  60. Remove the lift arms from below the vehicle.
  61. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
