Instrument Panel Steering Column Upper Gap Hider (Remove and Replace)

Reuse

Remove

  1. Open the LH front door, lower the LH front window, and move the LH front seat backward.
  2. On the touchscreen, tap Controls > Steering, and use the left scroll wheel to adjust the steering column fully outward and fully downward.
  3. Disconnect the LV battery power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect) (Modify).
  4. Remove the instrument panel lower assembly. See Assembly - Instrument Panel - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove the steering column lower gap hider. See Gap Hider - Steering Column - Lower (Remove and Replace)
  6. Loosen the two screws that secure the steering column upper gap hider to the steering column.

    TIp
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 bit
    • 4 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  7. Apply protective tape to the instrument panel surface surrounding the steering column assembly.
  8. Remove the nuts (x2) that secure the steering column to the cross car beam, and remove the steering column upper gap hider from the steering column.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)

    CAUTION
    Check for broken clip pieces on the connector, and remove if present.

    Note
    Do not allow the full weight of the steering column to rest on the plastic instrument panel structure to prevent structural damage. Request assistance as needed to support the column during removal or installation.

Install

  1. Install the steering column upper gap hider to the steering column, and then install the nuts (x2) that secure the steering column to the cross car beam.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)

    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • 13 mm socket
  2. Remove the protective tape from the instrument panel surface and clean the area.
  3. Install the two screws that secure the steering column upper gap hider to the steering column.
    2.3 Nm (1.7 lbs-ft)

  4. Install the steering column lower gap hider. See Gap Hider - Steering Column - Lower (Remove and Replace)
  5. Install the instrument panel lower assembly. See Assembly - Instrument Panel - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  6. Connect the LV battery power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect) (Modify).
  7. On the touchscreen, touch Controls > Steering, use the left scroll wheel to adjust the steering column back to its original position, and then touch Save.
  8. Move the LH front seat back to its original position, raise the LH front window, and close the LH front door.
