Backlite Glass (Model Y Standard) (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Apply tape to body surrounding backlite glass

    Tuck tape as far under the glass as possible for better protection
  2. Remove the liftgate lower trim. See Liftgate Lower Trim (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect the backlite glass heater positive connector.
  4. Disconnect the rear defrost ground strap connector.
  5. Remove the center high mount stop light (CHMSL) harness, then release the clip that secures the harness to the liftgate.
  6. Secure the nylon cord to the starter tool, and then insert the starter tool from the inside of the vehicle through the adhesive bead at the LH upper corner of the backlite glass, positioning it close to the RH side of the LH datum of the backlite glass.
  7. From the outside of the vehicle, wrap the nylon cord clockwise around the backlight glass urethane.
  8. Use an IPA wipe to clean the location on the LH upper corner outside backlite glass where the removal tool will be installed.
  9. Install the anchor suction cup on the LH upper corner outside backlite glass where the removal tool will be installed.
  10. Tightly secure the nylon cord onto the anchor suction cup.
  11. Use IPA wipes to clean the four corners of the inside of the backlite glass.
  12. Install nylon cord in the spider cutting tool.

    Thread the nylon cord into spider cutting tool, then wrap tightly onto the roller.
  13. Install the spider cutting tool onto the inside of the backlite glass.

    Note
    Make sure that the spider cutting tool maintains tight suction on the glass and ensure that the surface of the tool and glass are clean and dry.
  14. Install an angle driver bit to an electric drill and set the drill clutch to 1.

    Failure to set the drill clutch to 1 may result in serious injury.
  15. Place a dashboard protector under the center high-mounted stopping light (CHMSL).
  16. Use the drill to turn the spindle on the cutting tool. Begin cutting urethane around the glass in a clockwise direction.

    Do not begin cutting the windshield without first setting the drill clutch to 1. Failure to do so may result in serious injury.

    Use caution around the backlite heater.

    Maintain an acute cutting angle. The installation position sequence of the spider cutting tool is RH upper corner, RH lower corner, LH lower corner, then LH upper corner.

    To avoid being blocked by the CHMSL, when the nylon cord reaches the RH datum, use a mini hook to retrieve the nylon cord and skip the RH datum.
  17. Move the anchor suction cup and nylon cord from the outside of the glass to the inside of the glass.
  18. Turn the spider cutting tool roller to cut the glass adhesive near the LH datum.
  19. Remove the glass removal kit.

    Slowly lift the LH upper corner of the backlite glass to remove the nylon cord from the LH datum.
  20. Manually close the liftgate until it is nearly latched.
  21. Secure double suction cup handles onto both side of the backlite glass.

    Clean the glass under the suction cups if needed.
  22. Remove the backlite glass, then place it on a portable bench..

    Lift up on the glass from the interior of the vehicle to assist with removal.
  23. Press on the tabs (x2) on the CHMSL assembly, then remove the assembly from the backlite glass.
  24. Remove the remaining glass adhesive from the liftgate.

    The remaining adhesive must be thinner than 1 mm.

Install

  1. Clean all mating surfaces with IPA. Remove any fingerprints or marks that will be visible under the CHMSL.
  2. Install the CHMSL assembly to the backlite glass.

    2x tabs, Slide CHMSL onto H-clips evenly until locked into place
  3. Install the backlite glass to the liftgate for a dry fit.

  4. Check the gap and flush of liftgate the glass

  5. Remove the glass and place it upside down on a stand.
  6. Remove the tape from the body surrounding the backlite glass.
  7. Remove the backlite glass heater grid connectors.

    2x connectors, Remove tape then cut harnesses
  8. Apply urethane primer to liftgate body and backlite glass along the urethane path, then allow it to dry for 2 minutes.

    If using Sika 258 sealant, use Sika Special Activator Pro

  9. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane.

    Opening must be 8 mm wide and 13 mm tall
  10. Apply urethane to the backlite glass along the primer path.

    Fill any gaps and smooth over any peaks in the urethane to ensure a consistent bead
  11. Install the backlite glass onto the liftgate.

  12. Check the gap and flush of the backlite glass and adjust as needed.

  13. Remove all tools from the backlite glass and clean it if necessary.
  14. Open the liftgate.
  15. Connect the center high mount stop light harness and secure the clip.
  16. Connect the rear defrost ground strap connector.
  17. Connect the backlite glass heater positive connector.
  18. Install the liftgate lower trim. See Liftgate Lower Trim (Remove and Replace).
