Remove

  1. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  2. Open the liftgate.
  3. Remove the LH and RH liftgate lower bump stops. See .
  4. Remove the LH and RH liftgate wedge dampers. See Liftgate Wedge Damper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove the LH and RH bumper blocks. See Bumper Stop - Liftgate - LH (Remove and Replace).
  6. Remove the LH and RH lower liftgate plugs.

  7. Remove the liftgate harness and the harness grommet. See ASY,HARN,LIFTGATE,PREM,MY,GBL TL,RADIO (Remove and Replace).
  8. Disconnect the backlite glass heater negative connector.
  9. Remove the clip and bolt that attach the RH ground harness to the liftgate assembly.

    • 10 mm deep socket
  10. Remove the liftgate cinch latch. See LIFTGATE CINCH LATCH (Remove and Replace).
  11. Remove the tuned mass damper. See .
  12. Remove the nuts (x3) that attach the base spoiler to the liftgate.

    • 10 mm deep socket
  13. Remove the spoiler outer panel. See Spoiler Outer Panel (Remove and Replace).
  14. Remove the tail lamp. See Taillight - Liftgate (Remove and Install).
  15. Disconnect the liftgate handle switch connector.
  16. Remove the harness liftgate extend from the liftgate assembly.
  17. Remove the backlight glass. See BACKLITE GLASS (Remove and Install).

    Note
    No need to remove the center high mounted brake light from the backlight glass.
  18. Use a telescoping hood prop to support the liftgate.
  19. Place shop towels on the LH and RH side liftgate jambs.
  20. Release the spring clips (x2) that attach the LH and RH power strut upper ball studs to the liftgate, and then lay the struts down on the door jamb.

  21. Remove the telescoping hood prop.

    Note
    Assistance is recommended after removal.
  22. With assistance, remove the bolts (x4) that attach the liftgate to the vehicle, and then place the liftgate on a stand.

  23. Remove the LH and RH liftgate ball stud bracket bolts (x2) from the liftgate.

  24. Remove and discard all spacer pads.
  25. Clean all remaining glass adhesive and spacer pads adhesive from the body and the glass.

Install

  1. With assistance, place the new liftgate on the support stand.
  2. Install the LH and RH liftgate ball stud bracket bolts (x2) to the liftgate.
    20 Nm (14.7 lbs-ft)

  3. With assistance, hand-tighten the bolts (x4) that attach the liftgate to the vehicle.
  4. Secure the spring clips (x2) that attach the LH and RH power strut upper ball studs to the liftgate.

    Ensure that the spring clip has been reset.

  5. Install the liftgate harness and the harness grommet. See ASY,HARN,LIFTGATE,PREM,MY,GBL TL,RADIO (Remove and Replace).
  6. Install the liftgate cinch latch. See LIFTGATE CINCH LATCH (Remove and Replace).
  7. Install the harness liftgate extend to the liftgate assembly, and install the grommet.
  8. Connect the liftgate extend harness connectors (x2).
  9. Connect the liftgate handle switch connector.
  10. Install the tail lamp. See Taillight - Liftgate (Remove and Install).
  11. Install the spoiler outer panel. See Spoiler Outer Panel (Remove and Replace).
  12. Install the nuts (x3) that attach the base spoiler to the liftgate.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

  13. Install the tuned mass damper. See .
  14. Install the LH and RH liftgate wedge dampers. See Liftgate Wedge Damper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  15. Install the LH and RH bumper blocks. See Bumper Stop - Liftgate - LH (Remove and Replace).
  16. Install the LH and RH liftgate lower bump stops. See .
  17. Install the LH and RH lower liftgate plugs.

  18. Close the liftgate to check gap/flush, and perform adjustments as necessary.
  19. Open the liftgate.
  20. Install the bolts (x4) that attach the liftgate to the vehicle, and then place the liftgate on a stand.
    24 Nm (17.7 lbs-ft)

  21. Apply touch up pain to the head of the LH and RH liftgate hinge bolts as necessary.

    Note
    Make sure to shake the touch up paint before applying. If a 2nd coat is necessary, allow the 1st coat to dry for 20 minutes before applying a 2nd one.
  22. Install the backlight glass. See BACKLITE GLASS (Remove and Install).
  23. If quipped, install the Chinese Tesla badge. See BADGE,M3MY TESLA CHINESE (Remove and Replace).
  24. Install the Model Y/Model Y+ badge. See Badge - Model Y (Remove and Replace) or Badge - Model Y+ (Remove and Replace).
  25. If quipped, install the Dual Motor badge. See DUAL MOTOR BADGE (Remove and Replace).
  26. Connect the electrical connector, and then install the clip that attaches the center high mounted brake light connector to the body.
  27. Install the clip and bolt that attach the RH ground harness to the liftgate assembly.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)

  28. Connect the backlite glass heater negative connector.
  29. Connect the backlight glass heater positive connector.
  30. Install the lower liftgate trim. See LIFTGATE LOWER TRIM - REAR SPEAKER (Remove and Replace).
  31. Place the vehicle in Service Mode by using the touchscreen. See Service Mode.
  32. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
  33. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Driver Assist > Cameras > Clear Camera Calibration, select RearView in the Camera Selection drop list, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  34. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  35. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  36. Remove the masking tapes after the urethane has cured.
    Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
    CAUTION
    Do not drive the vehicle until the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended minimum drive-away time has passed. Dow Betaseal Express has a drive-away time of 1 hour minimum in temperatures of 0˚F (-18˚C) or warmer. If necessary, leave the tape applying pressure to the glass on the vehicle and advise the customer that they can remove it after 24 hours. Additionally, advise the customer that they should avoid high driving speeds and speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
