If the brake pads/rotors have worn to the point of replacement, or the condition of the pads/rotors is such that safety is affected, replace the pads/rotors. Clean other brake components as instructed.

This procedure assumes the wheels are already removed from the vehicle. If this procedure is carried out as a stand-alone procedure, add correction code 34012501 as a separate correction within the same activity to the Service Visit.

Procedure

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Enable EPB Service Mode.
    1. Enable Service Mode through the touchscreen. See Service Mode.
    2. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
    3. While holding the brake pedal, tap the Service Mode "wrench" at the bottom of the touchscreen, and then tap Chassis > Brakes > EPB Service Mode, select Both in the EPB Selection drop down list, and select Start in the Action Selection drop down list. Touch Run, and allow the routine to complete.

      The EPB Selection field can also be selected as Left/Right as needed.

    CAUTION
    With EPB Service Mode enabled, the vehicle can roll freely.
  3. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  4. Put absorbent material underneath the brake fluid reservoir.
  5. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir and remove the brake reservoir cap.
  6. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.

    • 10 mm socket
  7. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the LH front knuckle, and then hang the caliper off to the side with an S-hook.

  8. Use a nylon brush and brake cleaner to clean the abutment clips and anti-rattle springs of the front brake caliper.

    The brake caliper should not be disassembled.

    CAUTION
    Do not apply grease to any part of the brake caliper or brake pads.

    Allow 1 minute to dry after cleaning.
  9. Install new bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the LH front knuckle.
    94 Nm (69.3 lbs-ft)

  10. Install the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

  11. Repeat step 6 to step 10 for the RH front brake caliper.
  12. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the LH rear brake caliper bracket.

    • 5 mm hex
  13. Remove the LH rear brake caliper, and then hang the caliper off to the side with an S-hook.
  14. Use a nylon brush and brake cleaner to clean the brake caliper at the indicated areas.

  15. Install new bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the LH rear brake caliper bracket.
    83 Nm (61.2 lbs-ft)

  16. Repeat steps 12 to 15 for the RH rear brake caliper.
  17. Check the brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
  18. Install the brake reservoir cap.
  19. Remove the absorbent material from underneath the brake fluid reservoir.
  20. Press the brake pedal several times to verify proper feel and action.
  21. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Chassis > Brakes > EPB Service Mode, select Both in the EPB Selection drop down list, and then select Stop in the Action Selection drop down list. Touch Run, and allow the routine to complete.

  22. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  23. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  24. Continue with the procedure for which the wheels were removed (if applicable).
  25. After service to the vehicle is complete, perform a test drive and make sure that proper brake pedal feel and brake performance is achieved.
