Procedure

  1. Prepare the vehicle for raising. See Raise Vehicle - 2-Post Lift.

    CAUTION
    Make sure that the vehicle is not charging.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the window.
  3. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  4. Place absorbent material underneath the brake fluid reservoir area.
  5. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir and remove the brake reservoir cap.
  6. Remove the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  7. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.

    • 4 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  8. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the brake caliper bracket.

    • External Torx E12
    • 3/8 in to ½ in adapter
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  9. Remove the LH front brake caliper and hang it off to the side with an S-hook.

    Note
    Preferably use S-hook 1082171-10-A. If 1082171-10-A is not available, use 1082171-00-A instead.

    Note
    S-hook 1082171-10-A can only be hung on metal parts.
  10. Use the brake caliper spreader to spread the brake pads as wide as possible to push the piston into a position for easy installation.

    • 1134786-00-A - Brake Caliper Spreader M3
  11. Remove the brake pads from the LH front brake caliper bracket.

    Note
    2x pads, 4x AST springs, 4x pad springs. Release the brake pad clips from the caliper bracket.
  12. Remove the LH front brake pad sliders (x4).
  13. Clean the LH front brake caliper bracket.

    Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush, and allow 1 minute to dry after cleaning.
  14. Clean the LH front brake caliper.

    Use nylon brush and brake cleaner as needed, and allow 1 minute to dry after clean.
  15. Install the brake pad sliders (x4) into the brake caliper bracket.
  16. Install the LH brake pads to the LH front brake caliper bracket.

    Note
    2x pads, 4x AST springs, 4x pad spring. Pads are side specific with inner and outer markings. Press the pad spring in to position it into caliper bracket. Lock the AST springs to the caliper bracket after installation.
  17. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the caliper bracket.
    32 Nm (23.6 lbs-ft)

  18. Install the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

    • 4 in extension

    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  19. Repeat steps 7 through 18 on the RH side of the vehicle.
  20. Install the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  21. Check the brake fluid reservoir and top off as necessary.
  22. Remove the absorbent material from underneath the brake fluid reservoir area.
  23. Pump the brake pedal a few times to seat the pads against the brake rotor until the brake pedal feels firm.
  24. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  25. Burnish the brakes. See Brake Pads - Burnishing.
