REAR DRIVE UNIT - 4DU (Remove and Replace)

Reuse

Remove

  1. Position subframe lifting tool and remove subframe and rear drive unit assembly away from vehicle. See REAR SUBFRAME (Remove and Replace).
  2. Mark LH rear and RH rear subframe bolts.
  3. Remove both LH and RH rear shear plate. See REAR SUBFRAME SHEAR PLATE- FRONT - LEFT HAND (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove both LH and RH rear lower fore link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Lower Fore Link (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove both LH and RH rear upper fore link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Upper Fore Link (Remove and Replace).
  6. Remove both LH and RH rear toe link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Toe Link (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove both LH and RH rear lower after link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Lower Aft Link (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove both LH and RH rear upper after link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Upper Aft Link (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove both LH and RH mount assembly. See LEFT HANDS MOUNT - 4DU (Remove and Install).
  10. Attach the 3 hooks of the drive unit sling tool to the drive unit.
  11. Secure the drive unit sling to the gantry, and raise the sling until there is slight tension on the cables.
  12. Remove the LH, RH,and rear bolts that attach the drive unit to the subframe.

  13. Carefully raise the sling to lift the drive unit out of subframe. As the rear drive unit is lifted, maneuver the half shafts out of the way.
  14. Move the subframe and lifting tool from underneath the drive unit.
  15. Position an empty drive unit crate below the drive unit.

    Note
    Use a pallet if no empty crate is available.
  16. Lower the drive unit into the drive unit crate.
  17. Remove the drive unit sling from the gantry and the drive unit.

Install

  1. Position new rear drive unit and crate underneath gantry.
  2. Release protective covers from new rear drive unit and transfer them onto the old drive unit.
  3. Secure drive unit sling onto the new rear drive unit.
  4. Raise the gantry hook to put tension on the sling.
  5. Remove the bolts securing the rear drive unit to the rear drive unit crate.
  6. Lift the new rear drive unit out of the shipping crate.
  7. Lower sling to install drive unit into subframe.
  8. Carefully lower the rear drive unit into the rear subframe. As the rear drive unit is lowered, maneuver the half shafts into the drive unit for later installation.
  9. Hand-tighten the LH, RH and rear bolts that attach the drive unit to subframe.

  10. Lower the sling to release the tension on the cables.
  11. Torque the LH, RH and rear bolts that attach the drive unit to subframe.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)

  12. Release the drive unit sling tool from the rear drive unit.
  13. Install both LH and RH rear upper after link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Upper Aft Link (Remove and Replace).
  14. Install both LH and RH rear upper after link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Upper Aft Link (Remove and Replace).
  15. Install both LH and RH rear upper fore link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Upper Fore Link (Remove and Replace).
  16. Install both LH and RH rear lower after link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Lower Aft Link (Remove and Replace).
  17. Install both LH and RH rear toe link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Toe Link (Remove and Replace).
  18. Install both LH and RH rear lower fore link. See Rear Suspension Arms - Rear Lower Fore Link (Remove and Replace).
  19. Install subframe and rear drive unit assembly away from vehicle. See REAR SUBFRAME (Remove and Replace).
  20. Perform a cooling system vacuum refill. See .
  21. Connect the LV battery power. See .
  22. Connect an LV maintainer. See .
  23. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See .
  24. On the touchscreen, tap Service Mode Plus High Voltage > Procedures > Rear Drive Unit Replacement, and then allow the routine to complete.
  25. Select Stop Thermal Fill Drain, click Runto allow the routine to complete.
  26. Select Write Drive Type, click Runto allow the routine to complete.
  27. Select CAN Redeploy, click Runto allow the routine to complete,then click Close.
  28. Select Chassis Brakes EPB Service Mode, choose BOTH in EPB Selection tab.
  29. Select STOP in Action Selection tab, and then click Runto allow the routine to complete.
  30. Select Pair Immobilizer and Vehicle Odometer, and then click Runto allow the routine to complete, then click Close.
  31. Select Coolant Air Purge, and then click Runto allow the routine to complete, then click Close.
  32. Select Thermal system Test , and then click Runto allow the routine to complete.
  33. Disconnect the LV maintainer. See .
  34. Inspect the coolant level, top off as necessary, and then install the coolant bottle cap.

    Ensure that the coolant level is at the "Max" line.
  35. Exit Service Mode. See .
  36. Install the HEPA filter assembly See HEPA FILTER (Remove and Replace).
  37. Install the rear underhood apron. See .
  38. Close the hood.
  39. Move both front seats to original position.
  40. Raise all windows and close all doors.
  41. Remove the lift arms from below the vehicle.
  42. Review wheel alignment requirements and add correction code as needed.
