Remove

  1. Inspect the vehicle for abnormal tire wear that might indicate the need for a wheel alignment, and note any findings.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Stands.
  3. Open all doors and lower all windows.
  4. Move the front seats forward.

    Adjust the seat backs to avoid contacting the headliner.
  5. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
  6. On the touchscreen, touch Service Mode > Thermal > Coolant System > Start Thermal Fill/Drain and select Run to start the "Start Thermal Fluid Fill/Drain" routine.
  7. Remove the HEPA filter assembly. See SERVICE KIT - HEPA AND CARBON FILTERS (Remove and Replace).
  8. Disconnect the LV battery. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  9. Using the steering wheel holder, lock the steering wheel into position.
  10. Perform vehicle HV disablement procedure. See Vehicle HV Disablement Procedure.
  11. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  12. Remove the cabin intake duct. See Duct - Air Intake (Remove and Replace).
  13. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the steering column to the steering gear assembly.

  14. Slide the electric steering column upward to remove it from the steering gear assembly.
  15. Disconnect the front subframe harness connector.
  16. Disconnect the steering gear motor connectors (x2).
  17. Remove the front fascia assembly. See FRONT FASCIA (Remove and Install).
  18. Remove the bolts (x4) that attach the front end carrier to the LH and RH subframe crash cans.

  19. Lower the vehicle to a comfortable working height and set the lift onto locks.
  20. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the LH front knuckle.

  21. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the LH front knuckle, remove the caliper from the knuckle, and allow the caliper to hang from an S-hook.

  22. Release the clips (x2) that attach the LH front ABS wheel speed sensor harness to the knuckle.
  23. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front ABS wheel speed sensor to the knuckle, and then set the sensor aside.

  24. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH front tie rod end to the LH front suspension knuckle.

  25. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH front upper control arm to the knuckle, and then discard the nut.

  26. Repeat the step 20 through step 25 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  27. Remove the front stabilizer bar. See Front Stabilizer Bar and Links - Front Stabilizer bar (Remove and Replace).
  28. Remove the bolts and nuts that attach the LH and RH front lower lateral links to the struts.

  29. Remove the clip that attaches the steering gear harness to the harness bracket.
  30. Release the connector locks, and then disconnect the logic connectors (x2) below the steering gear.
  31. Remove the front skid plate. See FRONT SKID PLATE (Remove and Replace).
  32. Remove the clip that attaches the RH wheel liner to the body.
  33. Use a bungee strap attached to the front subframe to pull back the RH front wheel liner.
  34. Position a coolant drain container underneath the RH front corner of HV battery.
  35. Release the spring clip, and then disconnect the powertrain return tube from the front drive unit inverter inlet hose. Plug both hose ends with plugs (x2).
  36. Position the coolant drain container underneath the front of the drive unit.
  37. Release the clip, and then disconnect the powertrain return tube from the front drive unit heat exchanger. Plug both hose ends with plugs (x2).
  38. Remove the coolant drain container from underneath the vehicle.
  39. Remove the bolt that attaches the front drive unit ground strap to the front drive unit.

  40. Release the clip that attaches the front drive unit ground strap to the front drive unit.
  41. Put on HV insulating gloves, leather outer gloves, and safety glasses before continuing this procedure.
  42. Remove the bolt that attaches the front drive unit HV harness to the front drive unit.

  43. Slide the red release tab to unlock the front drive unit HV harness connector, and then slowly unlatch the release handle on the front drive unit HV harness connector, and then disconnect the connector from the front drive unit.

  44. Remove the front drive unit harness from the casting, and then move the harness aside.
  45. Remove the HV insulating gloves.
  46. Remove and discard the larger bolts (x2) that attach the rear portion of the front subframe to the body.

  47. Position the front subframe lifting tool beneath the front subframe.
  48. Attach an air hose to the front subframe lifting tool.
  49. With an assistant, raise the front subframe lifting tool to support the front subframe.
  50. Loop the straps over the front subframe, hook the ends of the straps to the metal rings, and then pull the straps tight to restrain the subframe to the front subframe lifting tool.
  51. Remove the bolts that attaches the LH and RH motor mounts to the body.

  52. Remove and discard the smaller bolts (x2) that attach the rear portion of the front subframe to the body.

  55. With assistance, carefully lower the subframe and front drive unit assembly from the vehicle.

  56. Move a coolant catcher under the front subframe and fixture assembly.
  57. Release the clips, disconnect the front drive unit inverter to oil cooler hose from the front drive unit inverter and the oil cooler, plug the inverter fittings, and then allow the hose to drain.

    Use a foldable funnel as required.
  58. Release the clip that attaches the front drive unit inverter to oil cooler hose to the front drive unit, and then remove the hose from the front drive unit.
  59. Release the clip that attaches the front drive unit inverter inlet hose to the front subframe.
  60. Remove the coolant catcher from under the front subframe and fixture assembly.
  61. Disconnect the front drive unit inverter logic connector and remove the harness clips (x2).
  62. Release the red locking tab to disconnect the front drive unit resolver connector and release the harness clip.
  63. Disconnect the front drive unit oil pump connector.
  64. Move the subframe lifting tool to under the gantry.
  65. Use the shackles (x3) to attach the drive unit sling tool to the front drive unit.
  66. Attach the drive unit sling tool to the gantry.
  67. Use the gantry to raise the drive unit sling tool so that there is slight tension in the cables.
  68. Remove the bolt that attaches the front motor mount to the front subframe.

  69. Remove the bolts that attaches the LH and RH front brake rotors to the knuckles.

  70. Install the axle removal tool between the front drive unit and the inner joint of the LH front halfshaft. And with assistance, use a dead blow hammer to release the clip ring that attaches the LH front halfshaft to the front drive unit.

    Do not remove shaft from front drive unit; doing so could damage the seal.
  71. Install the axle removal tool between the front drive unit and the inner joint of the RH front halfshaft. And with assistance, use a dead blow hammer to release the clip ring that attaches the RH front halfshaft to the front drive unit.

    Do not remove shaft from front drive unit; doing so could damage the seal.
  72. With the help of an assistant, use the gantry to raise the drive unit sling tool, guide halfshafts away from the front drive unit, and separate the front drive unit up from the front subframe.
  73. Set the front drive unit down onto an appropriate surface, continue lowering to put slack into the drive sling tool cables, and then remove the shackles (x3) from the drive unit.
  74. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front subframe crash can to the front subframe.

  84. Release the clips (x9) that attach the front subframe harness to the subframe.
  85. With assistance, release the straps (x3) and then remove the front subframe from subframe lifting tool.

Install

  1. With assistance, position the front subframe to the subframe lifting tool.

  2. Loop the straps over the front subframe, hook the ends of the straps to the metal rings, and then pull the straps tight to restrain the subframe to the front subframe lifting tool.
  3. Install the clips (x9) that attach the front subframe harness to the subframe.
  4. Install the LH suspension assembly to the front subframe.

  5. Install the bolt and nut that attach the LH front lower compliance link to the front subframe.

  6. Loosely install new bolts (x2) that attach the LH front lower lateral link to the front subframe.
  7. Remove the jack from under LH suspension assembly.
  8. Repeat step 4 through step 7 on the RH side of the vehicle.
  9. Position the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.
  10. Loosely install the outer bolts (x2) that attach the steering gear assembly to the front subframe.

  16. Use the shackles (x3) to attach the drive unit sling tool to the front drive unit.
  17. Use the gantry to raise the drive unit sling tool so that there is slight tension in the cables.
  18. Carefully lower the front drive unit into the front subframe. As the front drive unit is lowered, maneuver the axles into the front drive unit for later installation. Line up the front drive unit with the support stands.
  19. Loosely install the bolt that attaches the front motor mount to the front subframe.
  20. Install the LH front drive unit halfshaft into the front drive unit.

  24. Connect the front drive unit oil pump connector.
  25. Connect the resolver logic connector and secure the harness clip.
  26. Connect the front drive unit inverter logic connector and secure the front drive unit harness clips.
  27. Install the clip that attaches the front drive unit inverter inlet hose to the front subframe.
  28. Install the front drive unit inverter to oil cooler hose to the front drive unit, and then fasten the clip that attaches the hose to the drive unit.
  29. With the help of an assistant, move the subframe lifting tool and the front drive unit assembly under the vehicle.
  30. Loosely install new bolts (x2) that attach the middle portion of the front subframe to the body.
  31. Loosely install new bolts (x2) that attach the front portion of the front subframe to the body.
  32. Loosely install smaller bolts (x2) that attach the rear portion of the front subframe to the body.
  33. Loosely install new the larger bolts (x2) that attach the rear portion of the front subframe to the body.
  34. Loosely install the bolts that attaches the LH and RH motor mounts to the body.
  35. Torque the bolts (x2) that attach the middle portion of the front subframe to the body.

  50. Align the connector to the front drive unit, and then remove the HV connector lever lock before fully latching the connector.
  51. Slowly latch the release handle while pressing the front drive unit HV harness connector into the front drive unit.

  57. Position the coolant drain container underneath the RH side of front of the drive unit.
  58. Remove the plugs on the ends of fittings, and then install the spring clip to connect the front drive unit inverter inlet hose to the powetrain return hose.

  59. Position the coolant drain container underneath the front of the drive unit.
  60. Remove the plugs on the ends of fittings, and then install the spring clip and the plug to connect the front drive unit powertrain return hose to the front drive unit heat exchanger.

    Installing the side of hose first will eliminate the coolant loss when connecting to the supermanifold.
  61. Remove the coolant drain container from underneath the vehicle.
  62. Remove the bungee strap from the RH front wheel arch liner.
  63. Install the clip that attaches the RH wheel liner to the body.
  64. Install the clip that attaches the steering gear harness to the harness bracket.
  65. Connect the logic connectors (x2) below the steering gear.
  66. Install the front stabilizer bar. See Front Stabilizer Bar and Links - Front Stabilizer bar (Remove and Replace).
  67. Hand-tighten and nuts that attach the LH and RH front lower lateral links to the struts.

  68. Lower the vehicle to a comfortable working height and set the lift onto locks.
  69. Position the LH upper control arm to the knuckle, and then install the bolt and a new nut that attach the LH front upper control arm to the knuckle.

  79. Position and raise the underhoist stand to simulate the suspension at ride height.
  80. Measure the distance between the bottom of the fender and the center of the front axle to make sure that the front suspension is set to ride height. The distance should measure 420mm.
  81. Tighten new bolts (x2) that attach the LH front lower lateral link to the front subframe.

  90. Connect the front subframe harness connector.
  91. Slide the electric steering column downward to install it to the steering gear assembly.

      Make sure vehicle is not in Drive, shifting the vehicle into Drive will stop this routine. The test will last approximately 10 mins. The test will vary speeds from 3500-6500 RPM (idle speed = ~1500 RPM) and actuate the valve between series and parallel. If speed hovers at 7000 RPM, it indicates the pump is air locked, perform the vacuum fill again. Continue to add coolant and purge until the coolant level reaches between the NOM and MAX Lines on the bottle.
