Car Computer - RHD - Ap4 (Remove and Replace)

Reuse

Remove

  1. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  2. Click on Dashboards > Car Computer Replacement and on the "Getting Started" page, click on Next Step.
  3. On the "Backup & Factory Reset" page, click Next Step and follow the prompts to perform a profile backup and factory reset on the car computer.

    The car computer will reboot several times during this step.
  4. Once the "Replace" page appears, the car computer can be replaced.

    Take a clear photo of the serial number on the new car computer. It will be required for upcoming steps.
  5. Disconnect the LV battery and first responder loop. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  6. Place absorbent material below the car computer coolant hose connections to collect any spilled coolant.
  7. Release the spring clips (x2) and disconnect the inner and the outer coolant hose to the car computer mount, and plug the ends of fittings as soon as possible.

    Loss of coolant greater than 1L requires coolant vacuum fill.
  8. Install the car computer fluid port plug to the inlet and outlet of the car computer.

  9. Remove the nuts (x2) and bolt that attach the car computer to the bulkhead.

  10. Remove the LH lower A pillar trim. See A Pillar Lower Trim - LH (Remove and Replace).
  11. Remove the LH console side panel. See Console Side Panel LH (Remove and Replace).
  12. Remove the passenger air wave duct. See Instrument Panel - RHD - Air Wave Duct - Left (Remove and Install).
  13. Disconnect the connectors (x3) on the front side of the car computer.
  14. Release the clips (x2) that attach the electrical harness to the lower of the car computer.
  15. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the ground strap to the car computer.

  16. Remove the nut that attaches the car computer to the bulkhead.

    Gently push the foam carpet to access and remove the nut.

  17. Partially remove the car computer to access connectors.

    CAUTION
    Avoid straining harness.
  18. Disconnect the connectors (x6) on the left side of the car computer.
  19. Disconnect the connectors (x6) on the right side of the car computer, and then remove the car computer from the vehicle.

Install

  1. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the new ground strap to the new car computer.

  2. Place the car computer into the vehicle, and then connect the connectors (x6) on the right side of the car computer.
  3. Connect the connectors (x6) on the left side of the car computer.
  4. Place the car computer into position on the bulkhead.
  5. Install the nut that attaches the car computer to the bulkhead.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)

    Gently push the foam carpet to install the nut.

  6. Install a new bolt that attaches the ground strap to the car computer.
    4 Nm (2.9 lbs-ft)

  7. Install the clips (x2) that attach the electrical harness to the lower of the car computer.
  8. Connect the connectors (x3) on the front side of the car computer.
  9. Install the nuts (x2) and bolt that attach the car computer to the bulkhead.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)

  10. Remove the plugs (x2) from the car computer coolant hoses.
  11. Remove the car computer fluid port plug from the car computer.
  12. Attach the hoses to the car computer coolant inlet and outlet, and then engage the spring clips (x2).

    Perform a push-pull-push test to ensure the hoses are fully seated.

    Loss of coolant greater than 1L requires coolant vacuum fill.
  13. Remove the absorbent material from below the car computer coolant hose connection points.
  14. Remove the coolant bottle cap, and fill the coolant to the a proper level.

    Ensure that the coolant level is at the "Max" line.

    Note
    Loss of coolant greater than 1L requires coolant vacuum fill.
  15. Connect the first responder loop and leave LV battery disconnected.

    Note
    During Software Redeploy / OTA after replacing a part which prevents HV contactors closing, it is permitted to connect both the LV maintainer and the LV battery. Refer to Toolbox article 5795500 for more information.
  16. Connect LV battery maintainer charger. See LV Maintainer (Maintenance).
  17. Select Connect Locally and then choose Yes, Resume to reconnect to vehicle using Toolbox 3.0.
  18. For Third Party repairs only: Enter the vehicle security professional login credentials that are required in order to proceed to the "Associate Car Computer" section.

    Parts considered security and/or theft-relevant, or which may require special programming and/or setup, are only able to be configured by automotive professionals that are registered with a vehicle security accreditation organization, or by Tesla Service Technicians.
  19. Associate new car computer with vehicle VIN.

    Note
    Confirm the picture you took for the serial number matches the serial number displayed on the screen. This step will take a few minutes and the vehicle will reboot several times.
  20. Click Start Part Replacement OTA to deploy a software update to the vehicle.

    If necessary, Reconnect the Toolbox connection.
  21. In Toolbox, click Next Page to go to the "Restore" page, and then follow the prompts to restore the vehicle profile.
  22. Disconnect the laptop from the vehicle.
  23. Disconnect low-voltage battery maintainer charger and connect LV battery.
  24. Use the vehicle touchscreen to install the software package. See Software Reinstall - Touchscreen.
  25. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
  26. Perform the following routine using Service Mode or Toolbox: TEST_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-COOLANT-AIR-PURGEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode:
    • Thermal ➜ Actions ➜ Coolant Purge Stop or Coolant Purge Start
    • Thermal ➜ Coolant System ➜ Coolant Purge Start
    via Service Mode Plus:
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Front Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Left Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Right Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Unit ➜ Front Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Unit ➜ Rear Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge

    Note
    Make sure vehicle is not in Drive, shifting the vehicle into Drive will stop this routine. The test will last approximately 10 mins. The test will vary speeds from 3500-6500 RPM (idle speed = ~1500 RPM) and actuate the valve between series and parallel. If speed hovers at 7000 RPM, it indicates the pump is air locked, perform the vacuum fill again. Continue to add coolant and purge until the coolant level reaches between the NOM and MAX Lines on the bottle.
  27. Install the passenger air wave duct. See Instrument Panel - RHD - Air Wave Duct - Left (Remove and Install).
  28. Install the LH console side panel. See Console Side Panel LH (Remove and Replace).
  29. Install the LH lower A pillar trim. See A Pillar Lower Trim - LH (Remove and Replace).
  30. Move the LH front seat back to its original position.
  31. Inspect the coolant level and top off as necessary, and then install the coolant bottle cap.

    Ensure that the coolant level is at the "Max" line.
  32. Install the HEPA filter assembly. See Hepa Filter (Remove and Replace).
  33. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  34. Raise all windows and close all doors.
