During installation of the brake caliper, make sure that the flexible brake hose is not twisted and can bend forward. The flexible brake hose must not make contact with the wheel arch liner when the vehicle is lowered.

Remove

  1. Put the vehicle on a 2-post lift.

    Make sure that the vehicle is not charging.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the window.
  3. Enable the EPB Service Mode.
    1. Enable Service Mode. See Service Mode.
    2. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
    3. While holding the brake pedal, tap the Service Mode "wrench" at the bottom of the touchscreen UI, and then tap Chassis > Brakes > EPB Service Mode, select Both in the EPB Selection drop down list, and select Start in the Action Selection drop down list. Click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  4. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  5. Put absorbent material underneath the brake fluid reservoir area.
  6. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir and remove the brake reservoir cap.
  7. Remove the LH and RH rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  8. Performance models only: remove the bolt that attaches the rear caliper logo plate to the rear caliper.
  9. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the LH rear brake caliper bracket.

  10. Use the Brake Caliper Spreader to push the piston into the caliper.

    Make sure the up cut of the piston is placed in the middle of the two tabs.

  11. Remove the LH rear brake caliper and hang it off to a firm part beside with an S-hook.

    Preferentially use S-hook 1082171-10-A. If 1082171-10-A is not available, use 1082171-00-A instead.

    Note
    S-hook 1082171-10-A can only be hung on metal parts.
  12. Remove the LH rear brake pads from the LH rear brake caliper bracket.
  13. Clean the LH rear brake caliper bracket abutment clips (x4) with soapy water or brake cleaner.
  14. Clean the LH rear brake caliper with soapy water or brake cleaner.
  15. Remove the sticky shim from the outer brake pad.

    Note
    Use brake cleaner to resolve any adhesive from the back of the brake pad.
  16. Clean the back side of the inner brake pad with brake cleaner.
  17. Repeat steps 8 through 16 on the RH side of the vehicle.

Install

Note
Do not apply brake grease to the brake pad or brake caliper. 2025+ Model Y brakes do not require the application of brake grease.
  1. Cut 2 pieces of sticky shim to 4 cm x 5 cm.
  2. Install the sticky shims to the outer brake pad.

    Note
    Cut out any excess material and make sure that the double sided tape mates onto the brake pad.
  3. Peel of the backing from the sticky shim on the outer brake pad.
  4. Install the LH rear brake pads onto the LH rear brake caliper bracket.
  5. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the LH rear brake caliper bracket.
    26.5 Nm (19.5 lbs-ft)

    Apply thread locker to the thread of the bolts.

  6. Performance models only: install the bolt that attaches the rear caliper logo plate to the rear caliper.
    9 Nm (6.6 lbs-ft)
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 5 mm hex
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  8. Lower the vehicle to a comfortable working height and set the lift onto locks.
  9. Check the brake fluid reservoir and top off as necessary.
  10. Remove the absorbent material from underneath the brake fluid reservoir area.
  11. Pump the brake pedal 3-5 times to seat the pads against the brake rotor until the brake pedal feels firm.
  12. On the touchscreen, tap the Service Mode "wrench" (at the bottom of the touchscreen UI), and then tap Chassis > Brakes > EPB Service Mode, select Both in the EPB Selection dropping list, and select Stop in the Action Selection dropping list. Click Run, and allow the routine to complete.

    The EPB Selection field can also be selected as Left/Right as needed.
  13. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  14. Install the LH and RH rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  15. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  16. Perform a test drive and make sure that proper brake pedal feel and brake performance is achieved.
