BACKLITE GLASS (Remove and Install)

Remove

  1. Apply masking tape to the body around the backlight glass to protect the paint from damage.
  2. Remove the lower liftgate trim. See LIFTGATE LOWER TRIM - REAR SPEAKER (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect the backlight glass heater positive connector.
  4. Disconnect the backlight glass heater negative connector.
  5. Release the clip that attaches the center high mounted brake light connector to the body, and then disconnect the connector.
  6. Secure the nylon cord to the starter tool, and then insert the starter tool from the inside of the vehicle through the adhesive bead at the LH upper corner of the backlight glass, positioning it close to the RH side of the LH datum of the backlight glass.
  7. Pull the nylon cord through.

    Note
    Make sure to pull enough nylon cord through to wrap around the perimeter of the glass.
  8. From the outside of the vehicle, wrap the nylon cord clockwise around the backlight glass urethane.
  9. Clean the LH lower corner of the roof glass with isopropyl alcohol.
  10. Position the anchor suction cup in the LH lower corner of the roof glass.
  11. Secure the nylon cord to the anchor suction cup.
  12. Clean the interior side of the backlight glass with isopropyl alcohol, especially the four corners of the glass.
  13. Secure the interior side of the nylon cord to the Spider cutting tool.

    Note
    Follow the instructions on the Spider tool. Feed the line through the opening of the cutting tool and tie a knot to secure the line in place. If the spindle is not turned the proper direction, the cutting tool will be damaged.
  14. Secure the Spider cutting tool to the interior side of the backlight glass assembly.
  15. Secure the angle driver to the electric drill.
  16. Turn the spindle on the cutting tool with the drill to cut the upper side of the urethane securing backlight glass to body.

    Note
    Use dashboard protector to protect the center high mounted brake light and to avoid the nylon cord is blocked by the datums of the brake light during cutting the glass adhesive.
  17. Stop cutting the urethane when the nylon cord makes contact with the RH datum of the backlight glass, and then use a mini hook to carefully extract and navigate the cord around the RH datum of the backlight glass.
  18. Move the cutting tool to the RH lower corner of the backlight glass, and then reel the nylon cord to cut the RH side of the urethane securing backlight glass to body.
  19. Move the cutting tool to the LH lower corner of the backlight glass, and then reel the nylon cord to cut the lower side of the urethane securing backlight glass to body.
  20. Move the cutting tool to the LH upper corner of the backlight glass, and then reel the nylon cord to cut the LH side of the urethane securing backlight glass to body.

    Stop cutting the urethane when the nylon cord makes contact with the LH datum of the backlight glass.
  21. Carefully lift the backlight glass up and then move the anchor suction cup through the gap from the outside to the inside of the vehicle.
  22. Turn the spindle on the cutting tool to cut the remaining urethane that attaches the backight glass to the body.
  23. Remove the wire, anchor suction cup and cutting tool from the backlight glass.

    Note
    Carefully lift the LH upper corner of the backlight glass to remove the nylon cord from the LH datum.
  24. Manually close the liftgate.
  25. Attach suction cups to the LH and RH sides of the backlight glass.
  26. With an assistant, remove the backlight glass assembly from the vehicle.
  27. Release the tabs (x2) that attach the center high mounted brake light to the backlight glass, and then remove the brake light from the glass.
  28. Remove and discard the spacer pads (x14) from the backlight glass.
  29. Use a razor blade to carefully remove the old urethane from the backlight glass.

  31. Clean the mating surface of the body with IPA wipes.

Install

  1. Install new spacer pads (x14) to the backlight glass.
  2. Slide the center high mounted brake light to the H-clips.

    Make sure that the clips are properly engaged.
  3. Attach suction cups to the LH and RH sides of the backlight glass.

    Clean the glass under the suction cups to improve performance of the suction cups.
  4. With an assistant, position the backlight glass onto the vehicle for a dry fit and check the gap and flush of the backlight glass to the body.

  5. With an assistant, remove the backlight glass and set it on a stand.
  6. Remove the masking tape from the body.
  7. Clean the urethane path on the vehicle with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe. Allow the surface to dry before continuing to the next step.
  8. Apply urethane primer:
    1. Apply urethane primer to the vehicle along the urethane path and in areas that were damaged during removal of the backlight glass.
    2. Apply urethane primer to the backlight glass along the urethane path.

    Allow the primer to dry for at least 2 minutes before continuing.
  9. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane by cutting the tip of the urethane cartridge in a triangular shape approximately 12 mm wide and 20 mm tall.
  10. Apply urethane to the backlight glass following the urethane primer path.
  11. With an assistant, install the backlight glass to the vehicle.
  12. Check the gap and flush of the backlight glass to the body before fully seating the backlight glass.
  13. Fully seat the backlight glass, check the gap and flush, and adjust as necessary.
  14. Clean any debris or visible urethane from the glass and the body with IPA and allow the surface to dry.
  15. Remove the suction cups from the backlight glass.
  16. Apply masking tape to attach the backlight glass to the body while the urethane cures.

    For urethane curing time, follow urethane manufacturer's recommendations.
  17. Open the liftgate.
  18. Connect the electrical connector, and then install the clip that attaches the center high mounted brake light connector to the body.
  19. Connect the backlight glass heater negative connector.
  20. Connect the backlight glass heater positive connector.
  21. Install the lower liftgate trim. See LIFTGATE LOWER TRIM - REAR SPEAKER (Remove and Replace).
  22. Remove the masking tape after the urethane has cured.

    CAUTION
    Do not drive the vehicle until the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended minimum drive-away time has passed. Dow Betaseal Express has a drive-away time of 1 hour minimum in temperatures of 0˚F (-18˚C) or warmer. If necessary, leave the tape applying pressure to the glass on the vehicle and advise the customer that they can remove it after 24 hours. Additionally, advise the customer that they should avoid high driving speeds and speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
