Seat Assembly - 1st Row - LH (Remove and Replace)

Note
The front seats contain airbags and pretensioners and therefore must be disposed of properly. See Remove the Front Seat Airbag and Discard for more information. Add Correction Code 20010707 to document the labor; the labor time for destructively removing and disposing of the front seat airbag and pretensioner is not reflected in the front seat removal and replacement labor time.

Note
Though the 1st row LH seat is described, the procedure is the same for the 1st row RH seat. This procedure can be used for the driver seat and the passenger seat in LHD and RHD vehicles.

Remove

  1. Open all the doors and lower all the windows.
  2. If servicing the front passenger seat:
    1. Place the vehicle into Service Mode. See Service Mode.
    2. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
    3. Reinstall the vehicle software. See Software Reinstall - Touchscreen.
  3. Remove the LH mid A-Pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the LH lower A-Pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Lower - LH (Remove and Replace).
  5. Release the clip that attaches the LH front carpet to the body near the front of the LH door opening.
  6. Fold the front of the LH front carpet rearward so that the LH body controller module and its surrounding connectors are exposed.
  7. Insert the seat belt release key (1133787-00-A) into the bottom of the seatbelt pretensioner coupling to release the seatbelt from the pretensioner.
  8. Move the seat fully forward.
  9. Remove the driver seat track rear covers. See Cover - Rear - Seat Track - 1st Row Seat (Remove and Replace).
  10. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the rear of the 1st row LH seat to the body.

    Use only the Torx Plus T45 bit to remove the seat bolts.

  11. Move the seat fully rearward.
  12. Remove the driver seat track front covers. See Cover - Front - Seat Track - 1st Row Seat (Remove and Replace).
  13. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the front of the 1st row LH seat to the body.

  14. Adjust the LH front seat to the middle of the seat tracks, and then raise the seat fully.
    Tip: Performing this step will aide in removing the seat.
  15. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  16. Disconnect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  17. Locate the LH front seat electrical connector on the LH body controller module.
  18. Release the LH front seat connector lock, and then remove the connector from the LH body controller.

    Note
    Squeeze the release tab on the LH front seat connector lock, and then swing the lock away from the connector to release the lock.

    CAUTION
    Do not pull on the connector too hard. If the connector does not easily disconnect from the LH body controller, the lock is still engaged.
  19. Release the clips (x2) that attach the LH front seat harness to the LH footwell support bracket near the LH side of the LH footwell.
  20. Release the clips that attach the LH front seat harness to the LH front seat harness guide.
  21. Pull the LH front seat harness out from under the LH front carpet.
  22. With assistance, remove the seat from the vehicle.

    Note
    Lift the seat, tilt the seat back, rotate the cushion toward the front door, and remove the seat from the vehicle, cushion first.

    Take care not to damage the upholstery or trim while removing the seat.

    If reinstalling the seat, place the seat in an area where it is not likely to be tipped over or otherwise damaged.

Install

  1. With assistance, position the 1st row LH seat in the vehicle.

    Take care not to damage the upholstery or trim while positioning the seat.
  2. Route the 1st row LH seat harness under the LH front carpet, position the harness in the harness guide, and then install the clips that attach the harness to the harness guide.
  3. Install the clips (x2) that attach the LH front seat harness to the LH footwell support bracket near the LH side of the LH footwell.
  4. Install the LH front seat harness connector on the LH body controller, and then engage the connector lock.

    Perform a push-pull test to ensure that the connector is fully seated and locked.
  5. Unfold the LH front carpet back into position, and then install the clip that attaches the carpet to the body near the front of the LH door opening.
  6. Install the LH lower A-Pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Lower - LH (Remove and Replace).
  7. Install the LH mid A-Pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  8. Connect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  9. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  10. Move the LH front seat fully rearward.
  11. Install the new bolts (x2) that attach the front of the 1st row LH seat to the body.
    33.5 Nm (24.7 lbs-ft)

    Note

  12. Install the driver seat track front covers. See Cover - Front - Seat Track - 1st Row Seat (Remove and Replace).
  13. Move the LH front seat fully forward.
  14. Install the LH 1st row seatbelt retractor onto the pretensioner.

    Note
    After reinstalling the seatbelt pretensioner into the seatbelt pretensioner coupling, perform a pull test to make sure that the seatbelt and pretensioner are securely engaged.
  15. Install the new bolts (x2) that attach the rear of the 1st row LH seat to the body.
    33.5 Nm (24.7 lbs-ft)

  16. Install the seat track rear covers. See Cover - Rear - Seat Track - 1st Row Seat (Remove and Replace).
  17. Replacement front seat assemblies and seat cushion frame assemblies procured after June 2024 are equipped with a newly-designed Tesla "mini-tilt" motor, and replacing these parts (or the tilt motor itself) might require a configuration change. Review the configuration information in the table and perform the following substeps if a configuration update is needed.
    1. Access the Vehicle Configuration section of the Infotainment Dashboard. See Gateway Configuration (Display and Change).
    2. Update cfg_frontSeattype according to the combination of tilt motors described in the table.
  18. If servicing the driver seat:
    1. Use the vehicle touchscreen to place the vehicle into Service Mode. See Service Mode.
    2. Reinstall the vehicle software. See Software Reinstall - Touchscreen.
    3. On the vehicle touchscreen, touch Controls > Service > Driver Seat, Steering & Mirrors Calibration > Start.
    4. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  19. If servicing the front passenger seat in a North American vehicle:
    1. Consult the parts catalog to see if a configuration change is needed.
    2. Reinstall the vehicle software. See Software Reinstall - Touchscreen.
    3. Remove all objects from the front passenger seat before beginning calibration.
    4. Locally connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
    5. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
    6. In Toolbox, click on the Actions tab, and then search for "OCS".
    7. Run the PROC_OCS1P_SELF-CALIBRATIONvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode Plus: Safety & Restraints ➜ Seats ➜ OCS1P Self Capacitance Calibration routine.

      Note
      This routine is only necessary for Fremont built vehicles.
    8. Click on the Actions tab, and then search for "Seat calibration".
    9. Run the PROC_VCRIGHT_SEAT-CALIBRATEvia Toolbox: (link) routine.
    10. Disconnect Toolbox and remove the laptop from the vehicle.
  20. Move the seat to its original position.
  21. Raise all the windows and close all the doors.
