Vehicle Cameras and Autopilot

The vehicle’s external cameras are integral to Autopilot functionality. Ensuring that the cameras are properly installed and calibrated is crucial to vehicle service and operation.

Clearing Camera Calibration Data, Calibrating the Cameras, and Pitch Verification

When servicing the vehicle’s external cameras, it is important to understand the difference between "clearing camera calibration data," "calibrating the cameras," and "verifying camera pitch".

  • Clearing Calibration Data: This removes camera calibration data based on the vehicle's previous camera positioning. Any time an external camera’s position has been altered (i.e., camera reinstallation or replacement), camera calibration data must be cleared so that the risk of unwanted Autopilot behavior is reduced or eliminated.
  • Calibrating Cameras: After clearing calibration data, the vehicle must be manually driven for up to 100 miles (160 km), so that the vehicle cameras can self-calibrate. Until calibration is complete, Autopilot functionality will be limited.
  • Verifying Camera Pitch: Some vehicle cameras, upon replacement or reinstallation, must have their orientation confirmed via "pitch verification" so that Autopilot and other systems can function optimally. Refer to the appropriate procedures in the Service Manual for more information.

Responsible Autopilot Usage

When returning the vehicle to the customer, remind them that the driver is always responsible for watching the road and must be prepared to resume manual driving any time Autopilot is in use.
