Boot Kit - Brake Caliper - Front (Remove and Replace)

  1. Raise and support vehicle

    Ensure vehicle is not charging before lifting it off the ground, Set air suspension to "Jack Mode" if equipped
  2. Open LH front door
  3. Lower LH front window
  4. Open hood
  5. Remove rear apron

  6. Remove LH front wheel cap

    1x cap, Use both hands to gently pull the wheel cap to release the clips, Wheels may be equipped with center caps
  7. Loosen LH front wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  8. Raise vehicle partially and lower lift onto locks

    Set vehicle to a comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side
  9. Remove LH front wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  10. Remove bolt securing LH front brake caliper hose to knuckle

    1x bolt, 10mm, 5 Nm
  11. Position the oil drain under LH front brake caliper area
  12. Remove LH front brake hose from LH front brake caliper

    1x bolt, 11mm, 42 Nm,2x copper washers, Discard after removal,because there is no separate part number for the bolt and copper washer, the LH front brake hose needs to be replaced
  13. Remove the nut securing LH front brake line to LH front brake hose

    1x nut, 12mm, 16 Nm
  14. Remove the LH front jounce bracket from the vehicle

    1x nut, 10mm, 6 Nm, 1x alignment tab, LH front brake hose will not be re-installed
  15. Remove LH front brake caliper from LH front knuckle

    2x bolts, E18, 94 Nm, Discard bolts after removal
  16. Remove the outboard brake pad from the LH brake caliper

    A plastic trim tool must be used to avoid damage to the caliper finish, Using the pry tool work the brake pads off of the fixed pins and remove
  17. Remove the inboard brake pad from the LH brake caliper

  18. Pressurize the brake caliper with compressed air until all pistons are pushed out of the caliper

    Please do not damage the piston surface,do not leave foreign bodies inside the seats and mark the position
  19. Remove the boot kit from the brake caliper

    Carefully take out the LH front brake caliper boot kit with a flat head screwdrive,without damaging the surface of the brake caliper
  20. Use hand brush and soapy water to clean caliper
  21. Use hand brush and soapy water to clean anti-rattle spring
  22. Prepare to install the new brake caliper boot kit

    Before installation, clean and lubricate the LH front brake caliper boot kit and piston withnon-woven fabrics and brake fluid
  23. Fit piston and caliper boot kit together and press in base evenly

    During the insertion phase, the piston must remain coaxial with its seat, if not, the seal gasket could be damaged, push each piston into its housing in the previously marked position and check that the piston and caliper boot are in place
  24. Install the inboard brake pad into the LH brake caliper

    When installing the brake pads, push the pad down onto the anti-rattle spring and slide the pad onto the fixed pins, It may be necessary to manipulate the caliper so the fixed pins are more visible
  25. Install the outboard brake pad into the LH brake caliper

  26. Install LH front brake caliper to LH front knuckle

    2x bolts, E18, 94 Nm, Install new bolts, mark with paint pen
  27. Position the LH front brake hose to vehicle for installation
  28. Install the LH front jounce bracket to the vehicle

    1x nut, 10mm, 6 Nm, 1x alignment tab
  29. Install the nut securing LH front brake line to LH front brake hose

    1x nut, 12mm, 16 Nm
  30. Install LH front brake hose to LH front brake caliper

    1x bolt, 11mm, 42 Nm, 2x copper washers
  31. Remove the oil drain from underneath vehicle
  32. Install bolt securing LH front brake caliper hose to LH front knuckle

    1x bolt, 10mm, 5 Nm
  33. Lower vehicle partially and set onto locks

    Note
    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered, Set vehicle to comfortable working height
  34. Fill brake bleeder reservoir to full level
  35. Clean area around brake fluid reservoir and remove brake reservoir cap
  36. Top off brake fluid reservoir

    Top off brake fluid as needed
  37. Install pressure bleeder adapter onto reservoir
  38. Set brake bleed reservoir pressure to 30 psi

    Connect power supply to bleeder and turn on the power, Set pressure to 30 psi, Attach brake bleed reservoir to brake bleed adapter
  39. Connect to vehicle using Toolbox 3.0
  40. Select Actions/Autodiag and search for "bleed"
  41. Remove bleeding valve covers and install the fluid catching bottle to LH front brake caliper outer bleeding valve before starting the ESP

  42. Open LH front brake caliper outer bleeding valve then click the play button next to PROC_ESP_FRONT-L-REAR-R-BRAKE-BLEEDvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode:
    • Chassis ➜ Brakes ➜ Brake Bleed FL-RR
    • Chassis ➜ Brakes ➜ Brake Bleed FL-RR
    and select Run to start the ESP, then close the bleeding valve once the pump stop running, then repeat the process for inner bleeding valve, and then lastly repeat the process for outer bleeding valve again

    2x bleeding valves, 11mm, 18.5 Nm (+/- 2 Nm) Base and Plus calipers
  43. Repeat the above step till clear fluid and no air bubbles come out of the LH front brake caliper bleeding valve

  44. Remove the fluid catching bottle, Torque LH front brake caliper bleeding valves then install covers

  45. Power off brake bleed reservoir and detach brake bleed reservoir from brake bleed adapter
  46. Remove pressure bleeder adapter from reservoir
  47. Check fluid level

    Top off if necessary
  48. Install brake reservoir cap
  49. Pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure the brake pedal feels normal
  50. Using Toolbox 3:
    1. Select the Actions tab and search for "Stiffness".
    2. Select the ODIN routine TEST_BRAKE_X_STIFFNESS-TEST-SERVICEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Chassis ➜ Brakes ➜ Brake Stiffness Test, and then click the link of the routine.
    3. If brake pads or rotors have been replaced, select UNBURNISHED under "Action_Type". In all other cases, select BURNISHED.
    4. Click RUN, and allow the routine to complete.

      Do not press the brake pedal during the test.
  51. Remove HSD cable from Ethernet port to disconnect Toolbox 3.0 from vehicle
  52. Raise vehicle partially and lower lift onto locks

    Set vehicle to a comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side
  53. Install LH front wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm, Start lug nuts by hand before using power tool
  54. Lower vehicle until tires are touching the ground

    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered
  55. Torque LH front wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  56. Install LH front wheel cap

    1x cap, Align valve stem with wheel cap cavity
  57. Install rear apron

    14x clips, Hold rear wall of frunk to keep from flexing while engaging front clips
  58. Close hood
  59. Remove vehicle from lift

    Lower rack arms fully and remove from under vehicle if necessary, Remove air suspension from "Jack Mode" if equipped
  60. Raise LH front window
  61. Close LH front door
  62. Perform a road test and burnish brakes, Ensure proper brake pedal feel and performance
