Airbag - Knee - Driver (Remove and Install)

Make sure 12V/LV power has been disconnected for at least 2 minutes before disconnecting the electrical harness from Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) components, such as Restraint Control Module, sensors, airbags, etc. Failure to do so can result in unintended safety system behaviors. Note
The driver knee airbag is only equipped on North American vehicles.

Torque Specifications

    • Wiha torque setter
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
Torx T30 bolts (x4) that attach the driver knee airbag to the instrument panel
8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
  • Torx T30 socket
  • ¼ in std ratchet
External Torx E10 bolts (x4) that attach the driver knee airbag to the instrument panel
8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
  • External Torx E10
  • 3/8 in std ratchet
  • 3 in extension
  • ¼ in torque wrench (installation only)
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter

Remove

  1. Open the all doors and fully lower all windows.
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  4. Remove the LH front floormat.
  5. Remove the LH console side panel carpet. See Side Panel - Center Console - LH (Remove and Replace).
  6. Remove the driver footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the push clips (x2) that attach the driver knee airbag to the vehicle.
  8. Remove the T20 bolts (x2) that attach the driver knee airbag to the vehicle.
    2 Nm (1.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T20 socket
    • ¼ in std ratchet
    • 4 in extension
    • Wiha TorqueVario-S 0.8 Nm - 2.0 Nm screwdriver (installation only)
      • Wiha torque setter
      • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
  9. Remove and discard the bolts (x4) that attach the driver knee airbag to the instrument panel.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    or
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket
    • ¼ in std ratchet
    or
    • External Torx E10
    • 3/8 in std ratchet
    • 3 in extension
    • ¼ in torque wrench (installation only)
      • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter

    CAUTION
    Support the driver knee airbag while lowering the assembly as the electical connector wire is very short.
  10. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the driver knee airbag, and then remove the airbag from the vehicle.

Install

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Note
Install new Torx External E10 bolts (x4) on the driver knee air bag. Do not use Torx T30 bolts (pictured).

CAUTION
Replace all patchbolts.
  • Make sure that the clips on the rear edge of the driver knee airbag cover engage the IP carrier.
