A new variant of the steering
column was introduced with different tilt/telescope adjustment motors. If the
steering column is replaced with different tilt/telescopic motors, modify the
configuration settings as required.
Remove
- Open the LH and RH front doors and lower the windows.
- Move the steering column to the lowest and most outward position.
- Set the steering wheel to point straight ahead.
- Move the driver and passenger front seats fully rearward.
- Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
-
Remove the bolt that
attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering gear input
shaft.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 13 mm socket
- Ratchet/torque wrench
- Slide the steering column intermediate shaft upwards and off of the steering gear input shaft.
- Release the steering column boot from the bulkhead, and then push the upper portion of the boot into the cabin.
- Remove the LH and RH instrument panel end caps. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace). See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH and RH mid A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH and RH upper A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Driver (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the RH footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Passenger (LHD) (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the center console. See Center Console (Remove and Install).
- Remove the driver knee airbag, if equipped. See Airbag - Knee - Driver (Remove and Install).
- Remove the driver airbag. See Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. See Steering Wheel (Remove and Install).
- Remove the steering column control module. See Module - Steering Column Control (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the instrument panel carrier. See IP Carrier (Remove and Install).
- Disconnect the electrical harness from the steering column connector.
-
Remove the nuts that attach
the steering column to the cross car beam.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 13 mm socket
- 3 in extension
- Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
- With the help of an assistant, raise the upper portion of the steering column up toward the roof, pull down on the instrument panel carrier under the steering column to create space for the rear motor of the steering column to pass under the cross car beam, and carefully move the steering column out toward the rear of the vehicle.
-
After the motor clears the
cross car beam, rotate the steering column to the right so that the rear
motor lower portion clears the cross car beam, and continue to remove the
steering column from the vehicle.
NoteMake sure that the intermediate shaft sleeves clear the bulkhead.
Install
- Record the part number of the replacement steering column to be used later in the procedure when the gateway configuration is set.
- Slide the lower shaft as far as possible into the steering column.
-
Position the intermediate
shaft of the steering column through the opening in the instrument
panel.
NoteClear the lower shaft through the bulk head while supporting the front side of the steering column up towards the roof of the vehicle. Slightly pull the instrument panel surrounding the steering column for clearance.
-
Install the nuts that attach
the steering column to the cross car beam.
- Connect the electrical harness on the steering column connector.
- With assistance, slide the steering column intermediate shaft downward and on the steering gear input shaft, making sure the shaft is aligned and fully seated.
-
Install the bolt that
attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering gear input
shaft.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 13 mm socket
- Ratchet/torque wrench
- Install the steering column boot on the bulkhead, as shown.
-
Install the instrument panel
carrier. See IP Carrier (Remove and Install).
NoteFollow all steps in the Installation section of the referenced procedure.
