Active Grille Shutter (Remove and Replace)

Warning

Only technicians who have been trained in High Voltage Awareness and have completed all required certification courses (if applicable) are permitted to perform this procedure. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and insulating HV gloves with a minimum rating of class 0 (1000V) must be worn at all times a high voltage cable, busbar, or fitting is handled. Refer to Tech Note TN-15-92-003, High Voltage Awareness Care Points for additional safety information.

CAUTION
Model Y thermal management components operate under very tight specifications and can malfunction if Service procedures are not carefully followed. DO NOT rely on past experience with other thermal management systems; read through the Service Manual and do not deviate from the instructions.

Remove

  1. Put the vehicle on a 2-post lift.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  3. Remove the HEPA filter assembly. See Assembly - Filter - HEPA (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  5. Disconnect the LV power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  6. Release the connector lock, and then disconnect the active grille shutter electrical connector.

    CAUTION
    Do not push down on the red tab. Pull the red tab to release the connector lock.
  7. Remove the ambient temperature sensor cover from the active grille shutter, and then disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  8. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Non-Structural Pack) (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove the front valance. See Valance - Front Fascia (Remove and Replace).
  10. Install towel to the front of subframe to protect the cooling fan in later steps.
  11. With assistance supporting the cooling fan module assembly, remove the LH and RH bolts (x2) that attach the cooling fan module assembly to the front end carrier.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8 mm socket
    • 6 in extension
    • Universal Joint 1/4in
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • Ratchet/torque wrench (for installation only)

  12. Lower the vehicle to a comfortable working height and set the lift onto locks.
  13. Release the locking tabs (x14) that attach the active grille shutter to the cooling fan and shroud assembly, and then remove the active grille shutter.

Install

  1. Install the active grille shutter onto the cooling fan and shroud assembly, and then fasten the locking tabs (x14) that attach the shutter to the assembly.
  2. Raise the vehicle to a comfortable working height, and lower the lift onto locks.

    CAUTION

    Make sure there is an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise the vehicle may tilt to one side.

    Make sure that the doors are clear of surrounding objects.

  3. With assistance supporting the cooling fan module assembly, torque the LH and RH bolts (x2) that attach the cooling fan module assembly to the front end carrier.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8 mm socket
    • 6 in extension
    • Universal Joint 1/4in
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • Ratchet/torque wrench (for installation only)

  4. Remove the towel from the front of subframe.
  5. Install the front valance. See Valance - Front Fascia (Remove and Replace).
  6. Install the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Non-Structural Pack) (Remove and Replace).
  7. Lower the vehicle until tires are touching ground.
  8. Connect the ambient temperature sensor electrical connector, and then install the sensor cover to the active grille shutter.
  9. Engage the locking tab to connect the active grille shutter electrical connector.
  10. Connect LV power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  11. Perform the following routine using Service Mode or Toolbox (see 0005 - Service Modes): PROC_VCFRONT_X_LOUVER-CALIBRATIONvia Toolbox: (link)

  13. Disable Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  14. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  15. Install the HEPA filter assembly. See Assembly - Filter - HEPA (Remove and Install).
  16. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  17. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
