Windshield (HW4) (Remove and Replace)

Note
This procedure is for windshield assemblies that have new temperature and humidity sensors preinstalled. If the windshield does not have a temperature and humidity sensor preinstalled, see the install section of Windshield (Reuse Humidity and Temperature Sensor) (HW3) (Remove and Replace) for instructions on how to reuse the sensor and install new graphene blocks. The sensor may differ from the sensor in the referenced procedure.

Remove

  1. Open the front doors and fully lower all windows.
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the wiper arms. See Wiper Arms (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the cowl screen panel. See Panel - Cowl Screen (Remove and Replace).
  5. Disconnect the electrical harness from the windshield heater connector.
    1. If a windshield jumper harness is present, cut the cable tie that attaches the windshield heater connector harness and the main front harness to the vehicle body, and then disconnect the heater connector.

  6. Remove the LH sun visor check base. See Check Base - Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace) or Check Base - Magnetic - Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the rear view mirror. See Mirror - Rear View (Remove and Replace).
  8. Release the clips that attach the upper quad camera cover, disconnect the interior camera connector, and then remove the upper quad camera cover and interior camera assembly from the vehicle.

    CAUTION
    Do not pull the upper quad camera cover with excessive force, as the electrical harness is still attached to the interior camera.
  9. Disconnect the rear view mirror upper cover assembly.

    Connector count may vary depending on different vehicles.
  10. Disconnect the GNSS antenna.
  11. Release securing tabs (x2) to remove the glare shield from the windshield bracket.
  12. Remove forward facing camera assembly from windshield bracket.

    4x patch screws, T10, 1 Nm, Discard after removal
  13. Disconnect forward facing camera assembly

    2x connectors, Release locking tabs
  14. Disconnect the humidity and temperature sensor electrical connector.
  15. Disconnect the GPS antenna connector.
  16. Remove the screw that attaches the windshield harness to the windshield bracket, and then move the harness aside.
    1 Nm (.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T10 bit
    • Wiha TorqueVario-S 0.8 Nm - 2.0 Nm screwdriver (installation only)
  17. Remove the screw that attaches the GPS antenna to the bracket, and then remove the antenna from the bracket.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T10 bit
    • Wiha TorqueVario-S 0.8 Nm - 2.0 Nm screwdriver (installation only)
  18. Remove the RH middle A-Pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  19. Remove the RH upper A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  20. Remove the RH sun visor. See Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace).
  21. Remove the RH sun visor check base. See Check Base - Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace) or Check Base - Magnetic - Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace).
  22. Release the clips (x3) that attach the front of the front headliner to the body, and then separate the front part of the headliner from the body.

    Pull downward from the center of the headliner to release the clips.
  23. Release the windshield harness from the windshield fastener track bracket.
  24. Remove the fastener track.
  25. Use an equalizer blade handle to separate the datums from the windshield.

    The datums are located on each upper corner of the windshield.

    The datum may not be clearly visible. Use the blade to feel for it.
  26. Prepare the WRD Spider 3 glass removal kit.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • WRD Spider 3 - 1571168-00-A
  27. Secure the wire to the starter tool and push the tool through the urethane at the RH lower side of the windshield assembly.

    CAUTION
    Use the guard to prevent damage to the dash pad while using the starter tool.
  28. Release the line from the starter tool and wrap the line around the exterior of the windshield.

    Pull the line away from the starter tool. Make sure enough length is pulled through.

    Verify the line sits underneath the glass
  29. Attach the anchor point to the exterior of the windshield near the starting point of the handle tool, and then secure the line to the anchor.
  30. Secure the interior side of the line to the Spider cutting tool.

    Follow the instructions on the Spider tool. Feed the line through the opening of the cutting tool and tie a knot to secure the line in place. If the spindle is not turned the proper direction, the cutting tool will be damaged.
  31. Secure the Spider cutting tool to the interior side of the windshield.

    Note the orientation of the cutting line. Make sure the line wraps over the large pulley and holds a 90 degree angle.
  32. Secure the angle driver to the electric drill.
  33. Turn the spindle on the cutting tool with the drill to start remove the windshield.

    Move the cutting tool as needed, keeping the line close to a 90 degree angle.

    CAUTION
    When passing the VIN plate, use the guard to guide the line over the plate to prevent damage.

    Take special care in the areas identified that have overlapping panels to prevent damage.
  34. Attach suction cups to the LH and RH sides of the windshield assembly.
  35. With an assistant, remove the windshield assembly from the vehicle.
  36. Remove the suction cups from the windshield assembly.
  37. Use a razor blade to remove the old urethane from the windshield flange on the vehicle.

    Wear cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses when performing this step to avoid personal injury.
  38. Remove the tape from the exterior of both A-pillars.

Install

CAUTION
Use soft materials to protect the windshield and to prevent scratching. Verify that the rubber strip completely separates the windshield from the metal components of the body.
  1. Clean the windshield as needed. Take special caution to the forward-facing camera area to ensure a clear view of the forward-facing camera. See Clear Forward Camera View (Precision Cleaning Of Inboard Windshield).
  2. Place the new windshield on a support stand with the windshield bracket facing up.
  3. Attach suction cups to the LH and RH sides of the windshield assembly.
  4. Clean the urethane path on the vehicle with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe. Allow the surface to dry before continuing to the next step.
  5. If the dash pad foam is not flush with the body, cut off the excess foam until no foam is protruding from the body of the vehicle.

    A dash pad that is not flush with the body of the vehicle may cause noise issues.
  6. Apply urethane primer to the windshield and vehicle body along the urethane path and in areas that were damaged during removal of the windshield assembly.

    Be careful not to damage the headliner during application.

    Note
    Allow the primer to dry for at least 2 minute.
  7. Apply urethane to the windshield following the original path.

    Make sure that the urethane bead has a triangular cross-section of approximate width 8 mm and height 13 mm.
  8. With an assistant, install the new windshield assembly onto the vehicle, but do not set it yet.

    CAUTION
    Be careful not to damage the headliner during installation.
  9. Check the gap and flush of the windshield assembly to the body before fully seating the windshield assembly.
  10. Fully seat the windshield assembly, check the gap and flush, and adjust if necessary.
  11. Apply masking tape to attach the windshield assembly to the body while the urethane cures.
  12. Remove the suction cups from the windshield assembly.
  13. Install the GPS antenna into the windshield bracket, and then install the screw that attaches the antenna to the bracket.
    1 Nm (.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T10 bit
    • Wiha TorqueVario-S 0.8 Nm - 2.0 Nm screwdriver (installation only)
  14. Connect the windshield electrical harness to the GPS sensor connector.
  15. Connect the windshield electrical harness to the humidity and temperature sensor connector.
  16. Install the forward facing bi camera. See Camera - Bi - Forward Facing (Remove and Replace).
  17. Install the windshield harness onto the fastener track clips.
  18. Fasten the clips that attach the upper quad camera cover to the windshield bracket.

    Note
    Make sure that the connector for the rear view mirror passes through the opening in the upper quad camera cover.
  19. Install the rear view mirror. See Mirror - Rear View (Remove and Replace).
  20. Fasten the clips (x3) that attach the front of the front headliner to the body.
  21. Install the RH upper A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  22. Install the RH middle A-Pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  23. Install the RH sun visor check base. See Check Base - Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace) or Check Base - Magnetic - Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace).
  24. Install the RH sun visor. See Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace).
  25. Move the front passenger seat to the original position.
  26. Install the LH sun visor check base. See Check Base - Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace) or Check Base - Magnetic - Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace).
  27. Connect the electrical harness to the windshield heater connector.
    1. If a windshield jumper harness is present, connect the jumper harness connector to the windshield heater connector. Use a cable tie to secure the heater connector harness and the main front harness to the vehicle body, and then cut excessive tie from the cable tie.

  28. Install the cowl screen panel. See Panel - Cowl Screen (Remove and Replace).
  29. Install the wiper arms. See Wiper Arms (Remove and Replace).
  30. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  31. Perform the forward facing camera pitch verification. See Camera - Forward Facing (Pitch Verification).
  32. Remove the masking tape after the urethane has cured.

    CAUTION
    Do not drive the vehicle until the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended minimum drive-away time has passed. Dow Betaseal Express has a drive-away time of 1 hour minimum in temperatures of 0˚F (-18˚C) or warmer. If necessary, leave the tape applying pressure to the glass on the vehicle and advise the customer that they can remove it after 24 hours. Additionally, advise the customer that they should avoid high driving speeds and speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
  33. Move the driver seat to the original position.
