Coolant Bottle (Remove and Replace)

Reuse

Remove

  1. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  2. Remove the fresh intake duct. See Duct - Fresh Intake (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  4. Remove the 12V auxiliary battery. See 12V/LV Battery (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove the coolant bottle cap.
  6. Position a fluid evacuator near the front of the vehicle, and set the evacuator to "Evacuate" mode.
  7. Position the evacuation hose in the front LH corner of the coolant bottle, and then evacuate as much coolant as possible.
  8. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the coolant bottle level sensor.

    CAUTION
    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.
  9. Release the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the top of the coolant bottle.
  10. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor on the chiller to battery hose, near the coolant bottle.

    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.

    Note the color of the tape wrapped around the connector harness and the position of the harness in relation to the coolant bottle.
  11. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor on the powertrain supply hose, near the coolant bottle.

    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.

    Note the color of the tape wrapped around the connector harness and the position of the harness in relation to the coolant bottle.
  12. Release the spring clip, and then remove the chiller to battery hose from the supermanifold.
  13. Release the spring clip, and then remove the powertrain supply hose from the supermanifold.
  14. Release the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the RH side of the coolant bottle.
  15. Release the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the lower LH side of the coolant bottle.
  16. Remove the screw that attaches the side of the coolant bottle to the supermanifold.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  17. Remove the screw that attaches the front of the coolant bottle to the supermanifold.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 socket
    • 10 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  18. Release the coolant bottle from the supermanifold, and move the bottle towards the rear of the vehicle to remove it.

Install

  1. Verify the o-ring at the bottom of the coolant bottle is properly seated, and then apply lubricant to the o-ring.
  2. Position the coolant bottle on the supermanifold, making sure the coolant bottle output is fully seated against the supermanifold coolant input.

  3. Install the screw that attaches the side of the coolant bottle to the supermanifold.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  4. Install the screw that attaches the front of the coolant bottle to the supermanifold.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 socket
    • 10 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  5. Install the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the lower LH side of the coolant bottle.
  6. Install the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the RH side of the coolant bottle.
  7. Install the powertrain supply hose on the supermanifold.

    Perform a push-pull test to verify that the hose is fully seated.
  8. Install the chiller to battery hose on the supermanifold.

  9. Connect the electrical connector to the sensor on the powertrain supply hose, near the coolant bottle.

    Push the red locking tab into the connector to engage the locking mechanism. DO NOT push the locking tab sideways.
  10. Connect the electrical connector to the sensor on the chiller to battery hose, near the coolant bottle.

  11. Install the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the top of the coolant bottle.
  12. Connect the electrical connector on the coolant bottle level sensor.

  13. Fill the coolant bottle up to the MAX line with the proper coolant.
  14. Install the 12V auxiliary battery. See 12V/LV Battery (Remove and Replace).
  15. Connect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  16. Connect a laptop with Toolbox to the vehicle.
  17. Select the Actions/Autodiag tab and search for " Purge"
  18. Click the "play" button next to TEST_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-COOLANT-AIR-PURGEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode:
    • Thermal ➜ Actions ➜ Coolant Purge Stop or Coolant Purge Start
    • Thermal ➜ Coolant System ➜ Coolant Purge Start
    via Service Mode Plus:
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Front Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Left Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Right Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge

    The test will last for approximately 10 minutes. Monitor and keep the superbottle topped off while the test is running. Coolant pump speeds can be monitored in Service Mode + (see Service Mode Plus), in the CAN Viewer submenu. If pump speeds stay above 6900 rpm, there is still air entrapped in the system; run a cooling system vacuum refill.
  19. When the air purge is complete, click on the "X" at the upper right corner of the window.
  20. Check the coolant bottle level and top off if necessary.
  21. Install the coolant bottle cap.
  22. In Toolbox, select the Actions/Autodiag tab, and then search for "Thermal".
  23. Click TEST-SELF_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-PERFORMANCEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Thermal ➜ Actions ➜ Test Thermal Performancevia Service Mode Plus:
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Front Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Thermal System Test
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Thermal System Test
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Left Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Thermal System Test
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Right Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Thermal System Test

    , and then click Run.
  24. After the routine ends, click the "X" at the upper right corner of the prompt.
  25. Disconnect the laptop from the vehicle.
  26. Install the fresh intake duct. See Duct - Fresh Intake (Remove and Replace).
  27. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  28. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
