Subframe Assembly - Front (Dual Motor) (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Remove the front subframe assembly from the vehicle. See Subframe Assembly - Front (Dual Motor) (Remove and Install).
  2. Remove the steering rack. See Steering Gear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Position the axle remover cable around the inner joint of the LH front drive unit halfshaft, and then use a cable tie to hold the axle remover cable in position.

  4. Hook the axle remover slide hammer on the 2 axle remover cable loops, and then use the slide hammer to remove the halfshaft from the drive unit.
  5. Repeat steps 3 to 4 on the RH front drive unit halfshaft.
  6. Release the locking tab, and then push the handle downward to disconnect the front drive unit inverter logic connector.
  7. Release the clips that attach the front drive unit harness to the front drive unit inverter.
  8. Release the clips (x3) that attach the LH side of the front drive unit harness to the front subframe.
  9. Release the clips (x2) that attach the front drive unit harness to the front of the front subframe.
  10. Release the clips (x3) that attach the RH side of the front drive unit harness to the front subframe.
  11. Release the clip that attaches the front drive unit harness to the front drive unit motor.
  12. Release the red locking tab, and then press down on the tab to disconnect the resolver logic connector.
  13. Release the grey locking tab, and then press down on the tab to disconnect the oil pump connector.
  14. Remove the front drive unit harness from the front subframe.
  15. With an assistant, remove and discard the nuts that attach the front stabilizer bar to the front subframe, and then remove the stabilizer bar from the subframe.
  16. Remove the bolts that attach LH and RH crash can brackets to the front subframe, and then set the crash can brackets aside.
  17. Release the clip that attaches the inverter hose to the subframe.
  18. Remove the bolt that attaches the horn assembly to the front subframe.

  19. Position the subframe assembly under the gantry.
  20. Install the drive unit sling onto the gantry hook.
  21. Install the drive unit sling hooks onto the front drive unit.

  22. Slightly raise the gantry hook until the drive unit sling is taut.
  23. Remove the bolt that attaches the front drive unit to the front subframe.

    TIp
    Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm socket
  24. Lift the front drive unit up and away from the front subframe.

    Note
    Make sure not to move the rear front drive unit support posts.
  25. Lower the front drive unit onto a protected surface.
  26. With assistance, place a ½ Ton economy transmission jack under the LH suspension assembly.

    Avoid the suspension assembly falling.
  27. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the front LH lower compliance link to the front subframe, and then move the link aside.

  28. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front lower lateral link to the subframe.

  29. With assistance, remove the LH suspension assembly from the front subframe assembly.

    Note
    Protect the inner shaft of the halfshaft to avoid any dirt and stains.
  30. Repeat step 26 through step 29 on the RH side of the front subframe assembly.
  31. Release the straps that attach the front subframe to the subframe lifting tool.
  32. Remove the front subframe from the subframe lifting tool.

Install

  1. Position the subframe lifting tool against the front subframe, and then attach the straps (x3) to the subframe.

    Make sure to align the two subframe lifting tool guides with the front subframe.
  2. Verify the attachment point for the triumph horn on the new front subframe assembly. If the M6 rivet nut is missing, install a rivet nut (1129125-00-B) onto the front subframe assembly.

  3. With assistance, position the LH suspension assembly onto the front subframe assembly.

    Align the compliance link to its installation position.
  4. With assistance, install the bolt and nut that attach the LH front compliance link to the front subframe.

  5. With assistance, hand-tighten new bolts (x2) that attach the LH front lower lateral link to the front subframe.

  6. Remove the ½ Ton economy transmission jack from under the LH suspension assembly.
  7. Repeat step 3 through step 6 on the RH side of the front subframe assembly.
  8. Lower the front drive unit onto the front subframe.

    Make sure not to move the rear front drive unit support posts from their previous positions.
  9. Install the LH and RH front drive unit halfshafts into the front drive unit.

    Take care not to damage or displace the oil seals.

    Make sure that the opening of the snap rings are facing towards the bottom of the drive unit.

    Correctly position the axle splines into the drive unit. Take time to make sure they are seated together correctly. Do not force them together in a way they are not meant to mate,
  10. Verify that the halfshafts are fully seated:
    • Carefully push the halfshaft into the drive unit until there is an audible "click" from the halfshaft stub contacting the pinion shaft.
    • There will be a slight pulling sensation on the halfshaft as the halfshaft circlip locks into place.
    • Pull on the inner halfshaft cup to confirm that the circlip is locked into place. If the halfshaft detaches from the drive unit then reinstall the halfshaft and then test that it is fully seated.
  11. Install the bolt that attaches the front drive unit to the front subframe.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)

  12. Lower the gantry hook until the drive unit sling is slack.
  13. Remove the drive unit sling hooks from the front drive unit.

  14. Remove the drive unit sling from the gantry hook.
  15. Move the subframe lifting tool to a working area.
  16. Install the clip that attaches the inverter hose to the subframe.
  17. Hand-tighten the bolts that attach the LH and RH front subframe crash can brackets to the front subframe.
  18. Position the front stabilizer bar on the front subframe.
  19. With assistance. install new nuts to attach the front stabilizer bar to the front subframe, and then mark each nut with a paint pen.
    35 Nm (25.8 lbs-ft)
  20. Position the front drive unit harness to the front subframe.
  21. Install the clip that attaches the front drive unit harness to the front drive unit motor.
  22. Connect the resolver logic connector, and then engage the locking tab.
    Important: Perform a push-pull test to verify that the connector is fully attached.
  23. Connect the oil pump connector, and then engage the locking tab.
    Important: Perform a push-pull test to verify that the connector is fully attached.
  24. Install the clips (x3) that attach the RH side of the front drive unit harness to the front subframe.
  25. Install the clips (x2) that attach the front drive unit harness to the front of the front subframe.
  26. Install the clips (x3) that attach the LH side of the front drive unit harness to the front subframe.
  27. Install the clips that attach the front drive unit harness to the front drive unit inverter.
  28. Connect the front drive unit inverter logic connector, close the handle, and then engage the locking tab.
    Important: Perform a push-pull test to verify that the connector is fully attached.
  29. Install the steering rack. See Steering Gear (Remove and Replace).
  30. Install the bolt that attaches the horn assembly to the front subframe.
    12 Nm (8.8 lbs-ft)

  31. Torque the bolts (x4) that attach the LH and RH front subframe crush cans to the front subframe.
    53 Nm (39.1 lbs-ft)

  32. Install the front subframe assembly into the vehicle and stop this step after the bolts and nuts securing the front lateral links to the struts are torqued. See Subframe Assembly - Front (Dual Motor) (Remove and Install).
  33. Tighten the bolts that attach the LH and RH front lower lateral links to the front subframe.

    EMEA/APAC: Use 2123635-00-A and torque to 190 Nm. If 2123635-00-A is unavailable, use 1109912-00-B and torque to 135 Nm.

  34. Continue to perform the rest of steps listed in the front subframe assembly installation. See Subframe Assembly - Front (Dual Motor) (Remove and Install).
  35. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust correction code as a separate activity to the SV. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
