Boot Kit - Brake Caliper - Rear (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Raise and support vehicle

    Ensure vehicle is not charging before lifting it off the ground, Set air suspension to "Jack Mode" if equipped
  2. Open LH front door
  3. Lower LH front window
  4. Open hood
  5. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  6. Using Toolbox 3:
    1. Select the Actions tab and search for "EPB Service Mode".
    2. Select the ODIN routine PROC_EPB_X_SERVICE-MODESearch for routine in ToolboxEPB Enter Service ModeChassis ➜ Brakes ➜ EPB Service ModeChassis ➜ Brakes ➜ EPB Service ModeDrive Unit ➜ Rear Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Release / Re-Engage Emergency Parking BrakeChassis ➜ Brakes ➜ EPB Service Mode, and then click the link of the routine.
    3. Under "Action_Target" select BOTH, and under "Action_Type" select START.
    4. Click RUN, and allow the routine to complete.

      To release the parking brake on one side of the vehicle, select LEFT or RIGHT under "Action_Target".

  7. Remove rear apron

  8. Remove LH rear wheel cap

    1x cap, Use both hands to gently pull the wheel cap to release the clips, Wheels may be equipped with center caps
  9. Loosen LH rear wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  10. Raise vehicle partially and lower lift onto locks

    Set vehicle to a comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side
  11. Remove LH rear wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  12. Disconnect LH rear EPB caliper connector

    1x connector, Release locking tab
  13. Remove LH rear EPB harness bracket from LH rear caliper

    1x bolt, 10mm, 5 Nm
  14. Position the oil drain under LH rear brake hose area
  15. Remove the LH rear brake line tube nut from LH rear brake hose

    1x nut, 11mm, 16 Nm
  16. Remove LH rear brake hose from LH rear brake caliper

    Note
    1x bolt, 11mm, 42 Nm, 2x copper washers,Install new bolt and 2x new washers, Washersmust be placed on each side of brake line, Do notdouble stack washers, Mark bolts with paint penafter torque check
  17. Remove the LH rear jounce hose clip

  18. Remove bolts securing LH rear brake caliper to LH rear brake caliper bracket

    2x bolts, 14mm, 26.5 Nm
  19. Remove LH rear caliper from knuckle
  20. Clean off residual brake fluid with soapy water

    Caution: do not let the water ingress the socket
  21. Pressurize the brake caliper with compressed air until pistons are pushed out of the caliper

    Take out the brake caliper dust boot kit

Install

  1. Clean the surface of brake piston with non woven cloth

    Do not damage the piston surface when cleaning with non-woven cloth
  2. Install brake caliper boot kit into piston

    Lubricate the bellow with brake fluid DOT 3 and move the bellow to the bottom of the piston by about 5mm
  3. Install the piston with bellow to the caliper

    During insertion stage, the piston must be coaxial with its seat, otherwise the gasket may be damaged, Press the piston evenly into the brake caliper and adjust it to the piston installation position, Check whether the dust boot is in place
  4. Install LH rear brake caliper onto LH rear brake caliper bracket

    2x bolts, 14mm, 26.5 Nm
  5. Position the LH rear new brake hose to vehicle for installation

    CAUTION
    Make sure that the brake hose can bend forward and does not make contact with the wheel liner when the vehicle is lowered.
  6. Install the LH rear jounce hose clip to secure hose to body

  7. Install the brake hose to the rear left brake caliper

    1x bolt, 11mm, 42 Nm, 2x copper washers,install new brake hose, mark bolt with paint pen after torque check
  8. Lower vehicle partially and set onto locks

    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered, Set vehicle to comfortable working height
  9. Fill brake bleeder reservoir to full level
  10. Clean area around brake fluid reservoir and remove brake reservoir cap
  11. Top off brake fluid reservoir

    Top off brake fluid as needed
  12. Install pressure bleeder adapter onto reservoir
  13. Set brake bleed reservoir pressure to 30 psi

    Connect power supply to bleeder and turn on the power, Set pressure to 30 psi, Attach brake bleed reservoir to brake bleed adapter
  14. Connect to vehicle using Toolbox 3.0
  15. Select Actions/Autodiag and search for "bleed"
  16. Open LH rear brake caliper bleeding valve then Click the play button next to PROC_ESP_FRONT-R-REAR-L-BRAKE-BLEEDSearch for routine in ToolboxFR and RL brake bleed procedureChassis ➜ Brakes ➜ Brake Bleed FR-RLChassis ➜ Brakes ➜ Brake Bleed FR-RL and select Run to start the ESP, then close the bleeding valve once the pump stop running

    1x bleeding valve, 11mm, 10 Nm (+/- 3 Nm) Base caliper, 14 Nm (+/- 2 Nm) Plus caliper
  17. Repeat the above step untill clear fluid and no air bubbles come out of the LH rear brake caliper bleeding valve

  18. Remove the fluid catching bottle, Torque LH rear brake caliper bleeding valve and install cover

    1x cover, 1x bleeding valve, 11mm, 10 Nm (+/- 3 Nm) Base caliper, 14 Nm (+/- 2 Nm) Plus caliper
  19. Power off brake bleed reservoir and detach brake bleed reservoir from brake bleed adapter
  20. Remove pressure bleeder adapter from reservoir
  21. Check fluid level

    Top off if necessary
  22. Install brake reservoir cap
  23. Pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure the brake pedal feels normal
  24. Using Toolbox 3:
    1. Select the Actions tab and search for "Stiffness".
    2. Select the ODIN routine TEST_BRAKE_X_STIFFNESS-TEST-SERVICESearch for routine in ToolboxIBST Stiffness Test - Service - BURNISHED/UNBURNISHEDChassis ➜ Brakes ➜ Brake Stiffness Test, and then click the link of the routine.
    3. If brake pads or rotors have been replaced, select UNBURNISHED under "Action_Type". In all other cases, select BURNISHED.
    4. Click RUN, and allow the routine to complete.

  25. Remove HSD cable from Ethernet port to disconnect Toolbox 3.0 from vehicle
  26. Lower vehicle partially and set onto locks

    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered, Set vehicle to comfortable working height
  27. Install LH rear wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm, Start lug nuts by hand before using power tool
  28. Lower vehicle until tires are touching the ground

    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered
  29. Torque LH rear wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  30. Install rear apron

    14x clips, Hold rear wall of frunk to keep from flexing while engaging front clips
  31. Close hood
  32. Remove vehicle from lift

    Lower rack arms fully and remove from under vehicle if necessary, Remove air suspension from "Jack Mode" if equipped
  33. Raise LH front window
  34. Close LH front door
  35. Perform a road test and burnish brakes, Ensure proper brake pedal feel and performance
