Heat Exchanger - Front Drive Unit (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  2. Disconnect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  3. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Non-Structural Pack) (Remove and Replace).
  4. Position a coolant drain under the front drive unit heat exchanger.
  5. Release the clip, disconnect the coolant hose from the front drive unit oil cooler to the coolant bottle, and allow the coolant to drain.
  6. Release the clip, and then disconnect the heat exchanger - FDU inverter coolant hose to the heat exchanger.
  7. Remove the bolts that attach the heat exchanger to the inverter.

    Note
    Place a shop towel underneath the heat exchanger to catch any escaping fluids.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • EP10 socket
    • Flex head ratchet / torque wrench
    • 4 in extension
  8. Remove the heat exchanger from the front drive unit assembly.

    CAUTION
    Do not pry against the front drive unit or heat exchanger with tools. Gently wiggle the heat exchanger to free it from the front drive unit.

Install

  1. Install new o-rings onto the heat exchanger.
  2. Lightly coat the o-rings with KAF 1 gearbox fluid.
  3. Install the heat exchanger onto the front drive unit and press it firmly into place.
  4. Install the bolts that attach the heat exchanger to the inverter.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft) + 30 degrees
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • EP10 socket
    • Flex head ratchet / torque wrench
    • 4 in extension
  5. Connect the heat exchanger - FDU inverter coolant hose to the heat exchanger, and then fasten the clip.
  6. Connect the coolant hose from the front drive unit oil cooler to the coolant bottle.
  7. Use shop towels to wipe up any spilled coolant or gearbox fluid.
  8. Remove the coolant drain from under the vehicle.
  9. Disconnect the front drive unit oil pump electrical connector, and then connect the 12V power supply.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Oil pump switchbox
    • XP-10 Jump Pack
  10. Remove the fill plug from the front drive unit.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8mm hex socket
    • 3 in extension
  11. Install the a dipstick into the fill port, and then run the oil pump power supply for 1 minute.
  12. Allow 1 minute for the fluid to settle.
  13. Remove the dipstick from the front drive unit, verify the fluid is between the dipstick markings, and make fluid adjustments as necessary.
  14. Install the fill plug into the front drive unit.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8mm hex socket
    • 3 in extension
  15. Disconnect the 12V power supply tool from the oil pump, and then connect the electrical connector.
  16. Install the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Non-Structural Pack) (Remove and Replace).
  17. Remove the coolant bottle cap, and then fill the coolant to the "Max" level.
  18. Connect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  19. Connect a laptop with Toolbox to the vehicle.
  20. Click the Actions/Autodiag tab, and then enter "purge" in the search field.
  21.   22. Remove the laptop from the vehicle.
  23. Inspect the coolant level and top off as necessary.
  24. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
