Valve Body - EXV - Supermanifold (Remove and Replace)

CAUTION
Model Y thermal management components operate under very tight specifications and can malfunction if Service procedures are not carefully followed. DO NOT rely on past experience with other thermal management systems; read through the Service Manual and do not deviate from the instructions.

Remove

  1. Set up the AC machine.
  2. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  3. Connect to vehicle using Toolbox 3.0.
  4. In Toolbox, click Actions/Autodiag, and then search for "Thermal".
  5. Click Thermal Fluid Fill/Drain, and then click Run and allow the routine to complete.

    Note
    Select "X" at top right of window to close once complete, Thermal Fluid Fill/Drain routine has a 5 hour time limit, After 5 hours EXV's will close and routine must be performed again, Verify EXV positions are open VIA Garage >Thermal > Refrigerant loop EXV, Verify LCC, CC Left, Evap, CC Right, Chiller are all at ~100%. Recirc is at ~20%, LCC Solenoid is OPENED
  6. Disconnect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  7. Remove HSD cable from Ethernet port to disconnect Toolbox 3.0 from vehicle.
  8. Remove caps from low side and high side AC ports.
  9. Connect hoses to vehicle and perform AC recovery

    Note
    Touch time only, Connect couplers to vehicle, Open couplers by turning clockwise, Open Machine valves, Note the amount of refrigerant and oil recovered, If drained oil level increased more than 30 mL refer to drained oil loss chart.
  10. Overlap from AC refrigerant recovery
  11. Remove AC hoses from vehicle
  12. Remove the bolt that attaches the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line to the supermanifold.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 6 in extension
  13. Remove the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line from the supermanifold, and then hang it on the underhood storage unit support beam using an s-hook.

    Carefully position the line so that oil does not drip out.
  14. Release the connector locks, and then disconnect the electrical connectors leading up to the desired EXV. Follow the disconnect order in the example image.

    CAUTION
    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.

    The disconnect order is for ease of access.

  15. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the desired EXV.

    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.

  16. Remove the supermanifold harness from the supermanifold and rest it on the frunk support beam.
  17. Use a pick to pull the locking tab downward, and then pull toward the front of the vehicle to remove the EXV coil.
  18. Remove the EXV valve body from the supermanifold.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 1588745-00-A - Expansion Valve Socket, 28mm, 1/2" Drive
    • 6 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench

Install

  1. Lubricate the EXV threads and O-rings with the appropriate type of A/C oil. See Fluids and Capacities for A/C oil specifications. Then hand-start the valve into the supermanifold.
  2. Fully torque the EXV on the supermanifold.
    19 Nm (14.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 1588745-00-A - Expansion Valve Socket, 28mm, 1/2" Drive
    • 6 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  3. Install the EXV coil onto the EXV.

    Note
    Align the locking tab on the connector assembly with the recess in the EXV.
  4. Connect the electrical connectors that were disconnected during removal, and then engage the connector locks.
  5. Install new seal washers on the supermanifold side of the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line, and then lubricate the washers with a small amount of the appropriate type of A/C oil. See Fluids and Capacities for A/C oil specifications.
  6. Position the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line on the supermanifold, and then hand tighten the bolt that attaches the A/C line to the supermanifold.
  7. Tighten the bolt that attaches the A/C line to the supermanifold.
    22 Nm (16.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 6 in extension
  8. Reconnect the AC hoses to the vehicle.
  9. Perform AC vacuum.

    Touch time only, 2 minute leak test, 15 minute vacuum
  10. Overlap from AC vacuum.
  11. Remove low side AC hose from supermanifold to HVAC AC line assembly.
  12. Use oil injector to add measured amount of oil back to the system.

    Note
    Use calculated oil lost measurement and add new oil of the appropriate type into the system. See Fluids and Capacities for A/C oil specifications. If more than 30 ml drained out during recovery, refer to the drained oil loss chart.
  13. Install low side AC hose to supermanifold to HVAC AC line assembly.
  14. Perform AC refrigerant refill.

    Note
    Recharge refrigerant to 1.02 kg (1020g). For Robinair AC machines press ESC to NOT ACCEPT the step to clear out residual oil. Once complete press next to start End of Charge process.
  15. Perform step 1 for End of Charge process.

    Close high and low machine valves. Press next to continue.
  16. Connect first responder loop and 12V negative terminal.

    1x nut, 10mm, 6 Nm, 1x connector, Engage locking tab, Connect FRL first before connecting 12V to avoid damage to car computer
  17. Connect to vehicle using Toolbox 3.0.
  18. In Toolbox, click the Actions/Autodiag tab, and then search for "commissioning".
  19. Click Heat Pump Thermal System CommissioningTEST-SELF_VCFRONT_X_HEAT-PUMP-COMMISSIONINGGen3/tasks/TEST-SELF_VCFRONT_X_HEAT-PUMP-COMMISSIONING ModelY/tasks/TEST-SELF_VCFRONT_X_HEAT-PUMP-COMMISSIONINGLow Voltage Controllers Low Voltage ControllersThermal / Refrigerant System - Run Heat Pump CommissioningService Mode Service Plus Factory Mode Developer , and then click Run and allow the routine to complete.

    If this routine is not run after entering Thermal Drain/Fill mode, the AC compressor operation will be blocked, Select ‘X’ at top right of window to close once complete.
  20. Proceed with steps 2-4 for End of Charge process and follow instructions displayed on AC Machine.

    Note
    Turn AC on, Temp setting LO, Panel mode on, Fresh air mode on, Blower speed set to 3, Verify Discharge pressure does not exceed 26 bar and Suction pressure is not below 1.15 bar, Turn AC OFF, allow pressures to stabilize and remove high side hose.
  21. Proceed with steps 5-6 for End of Charge process and follow instructions displayed on AC Machine.

    Turn AC on, Temp setting LO, Panel mode on, Fresh air mode on, Blower speed set to 3, Turn machine valves to OPEN, Allow pressures to stabilize, Remove low side hose from vehicle, Continue with AC machine instructions and clear AC hoses
  22. Install caps onto AC ports.
  23. In Toolbox, click the Actions/Autodiag tab, and then search for "Thermal".
  24. Click Heat Pump Thermal System Performance TestTEST-SELF_VCFRONT_X_HEAT-PUMP-THERMAL-PERFORMANCEModelY/tasks/TEST-SELF_VCFRONT_X_HEAT-PUMP-THERMAL-PERFORMANCELow Voltage Controllers, and then click Run and allow routine to complete.

  25. Disconnect the laptop from the vehicle.
  26. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
