Procedure

Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
CAUTION

Brake fluid dissolves paint. Have clean towels and plenty of water standing by to wash spilled brake fluid off painted surfaces.

Informational PurposesAn informational icon, calling your attention
Note

Dispose of used brake fluid in a manner consistent with local environmental codes.

  1. Review the bleeder service tool profile.
  2. Raise the vehicle and remove all four wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  3. Lower the vehicle to a working height.
  4. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  5. Clean the area around the brake fluid reservoir breather cap and remove the cap.
  6. Add clean brake fluid to the MAX level in the reservoir.
  7. Install the pressure bleeder adapter onto the vehicle brake reservoir.
  8. Connect power supply to the bleeder tool, and then turn the bleeder tool on.
  9. Set the brake bleed reservoir pressure to 30 PSI, and then attach the brake bleed reservoir to the brake bleed adapter.
  10. Connect the vehicle to Toolbox 3.
  11. In Toolbox, click the Action/Autodiag tab, and then search for "bleed".
  12. Bleed the front LH brake caliper first.
  13. Remove the caliper outer bleed valve cap and attach the catch bottle to the valve.
  14. Open the outer bleed valve and watch the fluid as it flows out of the caliper.
  15. In Toolbox, start the task for the particular caliper.
    • For the front LH and rear RH calipers, run PROC_ESP_FRONT-L-REAR-R-BRAKE-BLEEDSearch for routine in ToolboxChassis / Brakes - Brake Bleed FL-RRChassis / Brakes - Brake Bleed FL-RR.
    • For the front RH and rear LH calipers, run PROC_ESP_FRONT-R-REAR-L-BRAKE-BLEEDSearch for routine in ToolboxChassis / Brakes - Brake Bleed FR-RLChassis / Brakes - Brake Bleed FR-RL.
  16. Close the bleed valve when the pump stops, or when clean fluid without bubbles flows out of the caliper
  17. Make sure that the reservoir does not go empty, or that the catch bottle does not overfill.

    Note
If the reservoir goes empty, you must refill the reservoir and repeat the entire procedure from step 6.
  18. Repeat step 14 through step 17 until clean fluid without bubbles flows out of the caliper.
  19. Repeat step 13 through step 18 for the inner bleed valve, and again for the outer bleed valve.
  20. Remove the catch bottle and install the bleed valve cap.
  21. Tighten the bleed valves:

    Mando brake calipers

    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)

    Hitachi brake calipers

    12 Nm (8.8 lbs-ft)

    Brembo brake calipers

    18.5 Nm (13.6 lbs-ft)
  22. Refill the reservoir to MAX, and properly dispose of the catch bottle contents.
  23. Repeat step 13 through step 22 for the front RH brake caliper.
  24. Bleed the rear RH brake caliper next.
  25. Remove the caliper bleed valve cap and attach the catch bottle to the valve.
    • For the front RH and rear LH calipers, run PROC_ESP_FRONT-R-REAR-L-BRAKE-BLEEDSearch for routine in ToolboxChassis / Brakes - Brake Bleed FR-RLChassis / Brakes - Brake Bleed FR-RL
  27. Open the bleed valve and watch the fluid as it flows out of the caliper.
  28. Close the bleed valve when the pump stops, or when clean fluid without bubbles flows out of the caliper
  29. Make sure that the reservoir does not go empty, or that the catch bottle does not overfill.

    Note
If the reservoir goes empty, you must refill the reservoir and repeat the entire procedure from step 6
  30. Repeat step 26 through step 29 until clean fluid without bubbles flows out of the caliper.
  31. Remove the catch bottle and install the bleed valve cap.
  32. Tighten the bleed valves:

    Mando brake caliperss

    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)

    Hitachi brake calipers

    12 Nm (8.8 lbs-ft)

    Brembo brake caliperss

    18.5 Nm (13.6 lbs-ft)
  33. Refill the reservoir to MAX, and properly dispose of the catch bottle contents.
  34. Repeat step 25 through step 33 for the rear LH brake caliper.
  35. Remove the pressure cap from the reservoir and install the breather cap.
  36. Press the brake pedal several times to verify proper feel and action.
  37. Using Toolbox 3:
    1. Select the Actions tab and search for "Stiffness".
    2. Select the ODIN routine TEST_BRAKE_X_STIFFNESS-TEST-SERVICESearch for routine in ToolboxChassis / Brakes - Brake Stiffness Test, and then click the link of the routine.
    3. If brake pads or rotors have been replaced, select UNBURNISHED under "Action_Type". In all other cases, select BURNISHED.
    4. Click RUN, and allow the routine to complete.

      Note
Do not press the brake pedal during the test.
  38. If the stiffness test fails because the minimum pressure was not reached, repeat the bleed procedure from step 11.
  39. Install all four wheels and lower the vehicle. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  40. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  41. Repeatedly press the brake pedal until firm.
  42. Perform a road test using a series of aggressive stops to make sure there is proper pedal feel and brake performance.
