Motor - Recliner - Back Rest - Front Passenger Seat (Remove and Replace)

Warning
Seat base edges are sharp and can cause personal injury. Wear cut resistant gloves when removing the seat from the vehicle, and while performing procedures that involve work on or near the seat base.

Remove

  1. Check that the firmware is version 2023.2.11 or above. If the firmware version is not 2023.2.11 or above, update the vehicle firmware.
  2. Remove the front passenger seat assembly from the vehicle. See Seat Assembly - 1st Row - LH (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the front passenger seat outboard side shield. See Side Shield - Outboard - Driver Seat (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the front passenger seat inboard side shield. See Side Shield - Inboard - Driver Seat (Remove and Replace).
  5. Lay the seat on its seat back to gain access to the underside of the seat cushion.

    CAUTION
    Protect the seat cushion from damage as necessary.
  6. Release the clips that attach the shell apron to the underside of the seat.
  7. Disconnect the seat back heater connector.
  8. Slide the seat back harness connector straight down to release it from the seat assembly.
  9. Disconnect the seat cushion heat pad connector from the seat back head pad connector.
  10. Slide the seat cushion connector upward to release it from the seat assembly.
  11. Remove the front passenger headrest trim. See Trim - Headrest - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  12. Remove the front passenger seat seat back shell. See Shell - Seat Back - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  13. Disconnect the electrical harness from the recliner motor connector.
  14. Disconnect the electrical harness from the lumbar valve pack and ECU.
  15. Use a trim tool to release the clips that attach the electrical harness to the seat frame.
  16. Disconnect the electrical harness from the lumbar pump connector.
  17. Remove the front passenger seat back trim retainers(x7) from the front passenger seat back frame.
  18. Remove the lower flap that covers the outboard corner of the front passenger seat seat back frame.

    Note
    Pull the trim straight up, off of the retaining tabs to release it.
  19. Remove the upper flap that covers the outboard corner of the front passenger seat seat back frame.

    Pull the lower section of trim away from the retaining tab to release it, then pull the trim straight up off of the upper retaining tab.
  20. Remove the lower flap covering the inboard corner of the front passenger seat seat back frame.

    Pull the trim straight up, off of the retaining tabs to release it.
  21. Remove the upper flap that covers the inboard corner of the front passenger seat seat back frame.

    Pull the lower section of trim away from the retaining tab to release it, and then pull the trim straight up off of the upper retaining tab.
  22. Remove the bolt that attaches the bottom of the lumbar support to the seat back frame.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

    Note
    The bolt is located below the lumbar ECU. Removing this bolt allows ease of access for the following step.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  23. Release the tabs(x2) that attach the bottom of the lumbar support to the seat back frame.
  24. Pull the front passenger seat seat back trim away from the front passenger seat side airbag to gain access to the air bag electrical connector.

  25. Disconnect the front passenger seat side airbag and pull the orange tabs(x2) down to release the connector.

  26. Remove and discard the nuts (x2) that attach the front passenger seat side airbag to the seat back frame.
    5.4 Nm (4.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket

  27. Carefully pull the front passenger seat side airbag chute from the seat back frame.

    CAUTION
    Do not remove the airbag from the airbag chute.

  28. Remove the seat upholstery by pulling the bottom of the seat back trim away from the seat back frame.

    Note
    Make sure the heater harness and the seat back trim is clear of the seat back frame.
  29. Release the clips (x2) that attach the lumbar pump to the seat frame.

    Note
    Squeeze the three lobes of the retaining clips, and then push towards the pump to release it.
  30. Slide the lumbar support assembly down, then press the bottom of the lumbar support assembly in, and at the same time, slide the lumbar support assembly up. Pivot the bottom of the lumbar support assembly out from the frame, and pull the lumbar support assembly down and out of the frame.
  31. Remove and discard the clip that attaches the recliner tube to the frame.
  32. Use a rubber hammer to tap the recliner tube where the clip was located earlier, and then remove the tube from the frame.

    Note
    The removal of the tube might require several taps with the rubber hammer in order to get the tube out of the seat.
  33. Remove the bolt that attaches the recliner motor to the seat back frame.

    Note
    Ensure the alignment dowel on the motor is not damaged. Hold the motor in place while removing the fastener so that the dowel is not damaged during removal.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8mm socket
    • 2 in extension
  34. Remove the recliner motor from the frame.

Install

  1. Install the recliner motor onto the seat back frame, and hand-tighten the bolt that attaches the motor to the frame
  2. Install the recliner tube into the seat back frame, through the recliner motor, and to the other side of the frame.

    Note
    Use the rubber hammer to tap the recliner tube so that the tube extends 16mm out of the seat back frame.
  3. With assistance, install a new clip onto the recliner tube.

    Use a 12mm deep socket and rubber hammer to tap the clip onto the recliner tube. Have an assistant use another hammer at the other end of the tube to oppose the tapping.
  4. Tighten the bolt that attaches the recliner motor to the seat back frame.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

    Note
    Ensure the alignment dowel on the motor is not damaged. Hold the motor in place while removing the fastener so that the dowel is not damaged during removal.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8mm socket
    • 2 in extension
  5. Install the power lumbar assembly to seat back frame.

    Note
    Slide the top of the lumbar assembly posts into the top of the seat back frame, and then push the assembly in toward the foam. Slide the assembly down toward the bottom of the seat frame and clip the bottom of the assembly to the bottom of the seat frame.
  6. Install the clips (x2) that attach the lumbar pump to the seat frame.
  7. Install the front passenger seat seat back and foam onto the seat back frame.

    Note
    Start by sliding the foam trim straight onto the seat back frame. Ensure the posts for the headrests engage the seat back foam. Ensure the heater harness and lower trim that engages the frame are pushed through to the back side of the frame.
  8. Install the front passenger seat side airbag studs into the seat back frame.

    The studs should line up with the two round holes. The elongated hole is not used for this part.

  9. Install new nuts (x2) that attach the front passenger seat airbag to the seat back frame.
    5.4 Nm (4.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket

  10. Connect front passenger seat side airbag electrical connector.

  11. Install the tabs(x2) that attach the bottom of the lumbar support to the seat back frame.
  12. Install the bolt that attaches the bottom of the lumbar support to the seat back frame.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  13. Install the upper flap that covers the outboard corner of the front passenger seat seat back frame.

    Pull the flap over the metal tangs to secure it.
  14. Install the upper flap that covers the inboard corner of the front passenger seat seat back frame.

  15. Install the lower flap that covers the outboard corner of the front passenger seat seat back frame.

  16. Install the front passenger seat back trim retainers(x7) to the front passenger seat back frame.
  17. Install the seat back shell onto the seat. See Shell - Seat Back - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  18. Install the front passenger headrest trim. See Trim - Headrest - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  19. Lay the seat on its seat back to gain access to the underside of the seat cushion.

    CAUTION
    Protect the seat cushion from damage as necessary.
  20. Install the seat cushion connector to the seat assembly.
  21. Connect the seat cushion heat pad connector to the seat back head pad connector.
  22. Install the seat back harness connector to the seat assembly.
  23. Connect the seat back heater connector.
  24. Hook the strap clips (x2) for the seat back shell onto the seat suspension.

    Note
    Make sure the straps are tight for proper fitment.
  25. Install the front passenger seat inboard side shield. See Side Shield - Inboard - Driver Seat (Remove and Replace)
  26. Install the front passenger seat outboard side shield. See Side Shield - Outboard - Driver Seat (Remove and Replace).
  27. Install the front passenger seat into the vehicle. See Seat Assembly - 1st Row - LH (Remove and Replace).
  28. If servicing the front passenger seat in a North American vehicle:
    1. Remove all objects from the front passenger seat before beginning calibration.
    2. On the vehicle touchscreen, touch Controls (Vehicle Icon) > Software and check the vehicle firmware version. If the vehicle firmware is 2023.2.11 or newer, perform a software reinstall. See Software Reinstall - Touchscreen. If the vehicle firmware is not 2023.2.11 or newer, update the vehicle firmware. See Software Update.
    3. Locally connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
    4. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
    5. In Toolbox, click on the Actions tab, and then search for "OCS".
    6. Run the PROC_OCS1P_SELF-CALIBRATIONvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode Plus: Safety & Restraints ➜ Seats ➜ OCS1P Self Capacitance Calibration routine.
    7. Click on the Actions tab, and then search for "Seat calibration".
    8. Run the PROC_VCRIGHT_SEAT-CALIBRATEvia Toolbox: (link) routine.
    9. Disconnect Toolbox and remove the laptop from the vehicle.
