Front Upper Control Arm (FUCA) Mount - LH (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Inspect the vehicle for abnormal tire wear that might indicate the need for a wheel alignment. Note any findings.
  2. Open the LH front door and fully lower the LH front window.
  3. Place the vehicle on a lift but do not raise it at this time.
  4. Remove the windshield washer reservoir filler neck. See Filler Neck - Reservoir - Windshield Washer (LHD) (Remove and Replace).
  5. Use a paint pen to mark the position of the bolts that attach the LH front upper control arm mount to the body, and then remove the bolts.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • 15 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 3 in extension
  6. Remove the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  7. Release the clips that attach the LH front wheel speed sensor harness to the knuckle and front upper control arm.
  8. While holding the joint in place, remove and discard the nyloc nut that attaches the front stabilizer bar link to the front strut.

    • 18 mm wrench
    • 18 mm socket (torque)
    • T40 socket
    • 6 in extension
  9. Move the front stabilizer bar link assembly away from the working area.
    Tip: Move the stabilizer bar up and/or down to get the correct angle needed to remove the link.
  10. Remove the bolt and nyloc nut (discard the nut) that attach the front upper control arm to the knuckle.
    Tip: Compress the joint to allow the bolt to be fully removed.

  11. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the strut to the lower control arm.

    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm wrench
  12. If the vehicle is equipped with a ride height sensor:
    1. Press the locking tab on the electrical connector, and then disconnect the connector from the ride height sensor.
    2. Secure the ride height sensor arm stud with a combination wrench, and then remove the nut that attaches the sensor arm to the Front Upper Control Arm (FUCA) assembly.
    3. Remove the bolt that attaches the ride height sensor assembly to the FUCA mount, and then remove the sensor assembly from the vehicle.
  13. Remove the bolts that attach the LH front upper control arm to the front upper control arm mount, and then remove the control arm from the mount.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  14. Remove the mount isolator from the front upper control arm mount.
  15. Remove the nuts that attach the front upper control arm mount to the LH front spring and damper assembly.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • 3 in extension
  16. Remove the front upper control arm mount from the LH front spring and damper assembly.

Install

  1. Install the front upper control arm mount onto the LH front spring and damper assembly, and then install the nuts that attach the mount to the damper assembly.
    23 Nm (17.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • 3 in extension
  2. Install the mount isolator onto the front upper control arm mount.
  3. Position the front upper control arm onto the front upper control arm mount.
  4. Hand tighten the bolts that attach the LH front upper control arm to the front upper control arm mount.
  5. Install the front upper control arm ride height tool onto the front upper control arm mount at the rear outer mounting hole.

    Note
    For newer front upper control arms, newer FUCA ride height tools might not be available. In that case, skip to step #TASK_BLX_M54_YLB__GUID-BAFBAEE0-0A3A-4E64-97B9-7303E7030DE2.
  6. With an assistant, hold the front upper control arm against the plate of the front upper control arm ride height tool and tighten the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front upper control arm to the front upper control arm mount.
    50 Nm (36.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  7. Remove the FUCA ride height tool from the front upper control arm mount.
  8. Install the strut assembly into the vehicle.
  9. If the vehicle is equipped with a ride height sensor:
    1. Position the ride height sensor assembly on the FUCA mount, and then install the bolt that attaches the sensor assembly to the FUCA mount.
      5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
      Tip: Hand thread the bolt until there is enough clearance for a wrench.
    2. Position the ride height sensor arm on the FUCA assembly, secure the sensor arm stud with a combination wrench, and then install the nut that attaches the sensor arm to the FUCA assembly.
      8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    3. Connect the electrical connector to the ride height sensor.

      CAUTION
      Do not push on the ride height sensor bracket with excessive force, as this could cause inaccurate height measurements.
  10. Hand tighten the bolt and nut that attach the strut to the lower control arm.

    The fasteners are fully tightened later in the procedure.
  11. Maneuver the front stabilizer bar link assembly for installing to the front strut.
    Tip: Move the stabilizer bar up and/or down to get the correct angle for installation.
  12. Install a new nyloc nut that attaches the front stabilizer bar link to the front strut.
    98 Nm (72.3 lbs-ft)

  13. Install the bolt and a new nyloc nut that attach the front upper control arm to the knuckle.
    56 Nm (41.3 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Compress the joint to allow the bolt to be installed.

  14. Install the clips that attach the LH front wheel speed sensor harness to the knuckle and front upper control arm.
  15. Install the bolts that attach the LH front upper control arm mount to the body.

    Make sure the larger and smaller bolts are installed in the correct locations.

    Line up the bolts with marks created during removal.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench

  16. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake rotor to the hub.
  17. Install the hub jack adapter onto the LH front hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  18. Use an underhoist stand to support the hub jack adapter.
  19. Measure the distance between the bottom of the fender panel and the center of the front axle and adjust the underhoist stand so that the front suspension is set to ride height.

    Note
    For proper ride height, the distance should be 461 mm.
  20. Torque the bolt and nut that attach the strut to the lower control arm.
    106 Nm (78.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm wrench
  21. Remove the underhoist stand from underneath the LH front suspension.
  22. Remove the lug nuts that attach the hub jack adapter, and then remove the hub jack adapter from the vehicle.
  23. Install the bolt that attaches the LH front brake rotor to the hub.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
  24. Install the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  25. Install the windshield washer reservoir filler neck. See Filler Neck - Reservoir - Windshield Washer (LHD) (Remove and Replace).
  26. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
  27. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  28. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
