Glass - Backlight (Remove and Replace)

CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.

Remove

  1. Remove the liftgate upper trim. See Trim - Upper - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  2. Remove the liftgate lower trim. See Trim - Liftgate - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the LH FM antenna amplifier.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the RH FM antenna amplifier.
  5. Disconnect the LH antenna filter electrical connector from the liftgate glass.
  6. Disconnect the RH antenna filter electrical connector from the liftgate glass.
  7. Disconnect the CHMSL electrical connector.
  8. Secure the double suction cups to both the LH and RH side of the backlight glass.
    Tip: Clean the glass under the suction cups to improve performance of the suction cups.
  9. Open the liftgate.
  10. Use a ball peen hammer and gasket scraper or equivalent tools to break both datums at the top of the backlight glass.

  11. Use a ball peen hammer and Equalizer 360 or equivalent tools to break both H-clips at the top of the backlight glass.

    Tip: Consider using a thin hydroblade attachment and lubricate with glass cleaner.
  12. Prepare the WRD Spider 3 glass removal kit.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • WRD Spider 3 - 1571168-00-A
  13. Secure the wire to the starter tool, and then insert the starter tool from the inside of the vehicle through the adhesive bead at the rear corner of the backlight glass.

    CAUTION
    Use the guard to prevent damage to the rear deck panel while using the starter tool.
  14. Pull the line through.

    Note
    Make sure to pull enough line through to wrap around the perimeter of the glass. Both ends of the wire can remain inside the vehicle interior and does need to be pulled through completely.
  15. Attach the anchor point to the interior of the backlight glass assembly, and then secure the line to the anchor.
  16. Secure the interior side of the line to the Spider cutting tool.

    Follow the instructions on the Spider tool. Feed the line through the opening of the cutting tool and tie a knot to secure the line in place. If the spindle is not turned the proper direction, the cutting tool will be damaged.
  17. Secure the Spider cutting tool to the interior side of the backlight glass assembly.

    Note the orientation of the cutting line. Make sure the line wraps over the large pulley and holds a 90 degree angle.
  18. Secure the angle driver to the electric drill.
  19. Turn the spindle on the cutting tool with the drill to start removing the backlight glass assembly.

    Move the cutting tool as needed, keeping the line close to a 90 degree angle.
  20. With an assistant, remove the backlight glass from the vehicle.
  21. Carefully use a razor blade to remove all remaining urethane from the liftgate body. Make sure any residual urethane is 1 mm or less in thickness.

  22. Remove the broken datums, H-clips, and all other debris from the body of the vehicle.

    Wear proper PPE including eye protection if using shop air to blow out debris.
  23. Clean the mating surface of the body with IPA wipes.

    Note
    Remove any smudges, finger prints, or other markings that may be visible under the CHMSL.

Install

  1. Secure the double suction cups to both the LH and RH side of the new backlight glass.
    Tip: Clean the glass under the suction cups to improve performance of the suction cups.
  2. With an assistant, position the backlight glass onto the vehicle for a dry fit.
  3. Check the gap and flush of the backlight glass to the body. Make note of any necessary adjustments.
  4. With an assistant, remove the backlight glass from the vehicle and set it on a stand with the inboard side facing up.
  5. Install the CHMSL assembly onto the new backlight glass.

    Slide the CHMSL evenly onto the H-clips until the CHMSL is secured in place.
  6. Apply urethane primer to the vehicle along the urethane path and in areas that were damaged during removal of the backlight glass.

    Allow the primer to dry for at least 2 minutes before continuing.
  7. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane by cutting the tip of the urethane cartridge in a triangular shape approximately 8 mm wide and 13 mm tall.
  8. Apply urethane to the backlight glass following the primer path.

    Note
    Fill in all gaps and smooth over any peaks in the urethane to ensure a consistent bead.
  9. With an assistant, install the backlight glass to the vehicle.
  10. Check the gap and flush of the backlight glass to the body and adjust as necessary.
    Tip: Trim tools and sandbags can be used to adjust the fitment of the backlight glass.
  11. Allow the glass to dry for at least 10 minutes before opening the liftgate.
  12. Remove the double suction cups from the backlight glass and open the liftgate.
  13. Connect the CHMSL electrical connector.
  14. Connect the RH antenna filter electrical connector.
  15. Connect the LH antenna filter electrical connector.
  16. Connect the RH FM antenna amplifier electrical connector.
  17. Connect the LH FM antenna amplifier electrical connector.
  18. Install the liftgate lower trim. See Trim - Liftgate - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  19. Install the liftgate upper trim. See Trim - Upper - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  20. Close the liftgate.

    CAUTION
    Do not drive the vehicle until the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended minimum drive-away time has passed. Dow Betaseal Express has a drive-away time of 1 hour minimum in temperatures of 0˚F (-18˚C) or warmer. If necessary, leave the tape applying pressure to the glass on the vehicle and advise the customer that they can remove it after 24 hours. Additionally, advise the customer that they should avoid high driving speeds and speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
  21. If the vehicle has alerts pertaining to the rear defroster, perform these additional steps to re-enable the rear defroster.
    1. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
    2. In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, type "Defrost" into the search field, click on PROC_VCRIGHT_DEFROST-RE-ENABLE, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
    3. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
