Steering Column (LHD) (Remove and Replace)

Note
A variant of steering column was introduced with different tilt/telescope
adjustment motors. If the steering column is replaced with different
tilt/telescopic motors, refer to Toolbox article 3187900 for details about the
configuration settings.
Remove
- Open the LH and RH front doors.
- Lower the LH and RH front windows.
- Use the touchscreen to move the steering column to the lowest and most outward position.
- Set the steering wheel to point straight ahead.
- Move the driver and passenger front seats fully rearward.
- Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
- Disconnect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).

Remove the bolt that attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 13 mm socket
- Ratchet/torque wrench
- Slide the steering column intermediate shaft upwards and off of the steering gear input shaft.
- Release the steering column boot from the bulkhead, and then push the upper portion of the boot into the cabin.
- Remove the LH and RH instrument panel end caps. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace). See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH and RH mid A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH and RH air wave bezel caps. See End Cap - Air Wave - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the driver knee airbag. See Airbag - Knee - Driver (Remove and Install).
- Remove the driver airbag. See Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. See Steering Wheel (Remove and Install).
- Remove the steering column control module. See Module - Steering Column Control (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the lower steering column gap hider. See Gap Hider - Steering Column - Lower (Remove and Replace).
- Release the Instrument panel harness clip.
- Disconnect the electrical harness from the steering column connector.
- Apply the masking tap around the steering column assembly.

Remove the nuts that attach the steering column to the cross car beam.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 13 mm socket
- 3 in extension
- Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
- With the help of an assistant, raise the upper portion of the steering column up toward the roof, pull down on the instrument panel carrier under the steering column to create space for the rear motor of the steering column to pass under the cross car beam, and carefully move the steering column out toward the rear of the vehicle.

After the motor clears the
cross car beam, rotate the steering column to the right so that the rear
motor lower portion clears the instrument panel carrier, and continue to
remove the steering column from the vehicle.
NoteMake sure that the intermediate shaft sleeves clear the bulkhead.
Install
- Record the part number of the replacement steering column to be used later in the procedure when the gateway configuration is set.
- With the help of an assistant, carefully move the intermediate shaft of the steering column through the opening in the instrument panel carrier, rotate the steering column to the right so that the rear motor lower portion clears the instrument panel carrier opening, and then rotate left.

Raise the upper portion of
the steering column up toward the roof, pull down on the instrument panel
carrier under the steering column to create space for the rear motor of the
steering column to pass under the cross car beam, carefully move the
steering column in toward the front of the vehicle and up onto the studs of
the cross car beam.
NoteMake sure that the intermediate shaft sleeves enter the bulkhead.

Install the nuts that attach the steering column to the cross car beam.
- Connect the electrical harness on the steering column connector.
- Install the Instrument panel harness clip.
- Remove the masking tap around the steering column assembly.
- Install the lower steering column gap hider. See Gap Hider - Steering Column - Lower (Remove and Replace).
- Install the steering column control module. See Module - Steering Column Control (Remove and Replace).
- Install the LH and RH air wave bezel caps. See End Cap - Air Wave - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Install the LH and RH mid A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Install the LH and RH instrument panel end caps. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace). See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Install the steering wheel to the steering column. See Steering Wheel (Remove and Install).
- Install the driver airbag. See Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace).
- Install the driver knee airbag, if equipped. See Airbag - Knee - Driver (Remove and Install).
- With assistance, slide the steering column intermediate shaft downward and on the steering gear input shaft, making sure the shaft is aligned and fully seated.

Install the bolt that attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering gear input shaft.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 13 mm socket
- Ratchet/torque wrench
- Install the steering column boot on the bulkhead, as shown.
- Connect 12V/LV power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
- Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
- Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
- Connect a laptop with Toolbox to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).

Use the replacement steering column part number recorded earlier and this table to
determine the type of steering column installed.

- In Toolbox, click Vehicle Configuration tab, scroll to steeringColumnMotorType, from the drop down menu to the right, select "BOSCH" or "JE" according to the above table, and then click Apply Changes. , click the
- In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, in the search fiield type "Column", click PROC_STEERING_COLUMN_CALIBRATIONSearch for routine in ToolboxSteering Column Calibration RoutineChassis ➜ Steering ➜ Calibrate Steering Column, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
- Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
- Restore the driver and front passenger seats back to their original position.
- Restore the steering column back to its original position.
- Raise the front windows and close the doors.
