Fluid Coupling (90 Degrees) - Front Drive Unit (Remove and Replace)

Correction code 39014012 2.88 NOTE: Unless otherwise explicitly stated in the procedure, the above correction code and FRT reflect all of the work required to perform this procedure, including the linked procedures. Do not stack correction codes unless explicitly told to do so.NOTE: See Flat Rate Times to learn more about FRTs and how they are created. To provide feedback on FRT values, email LaborTimeFeedback@tesla.com. NOTE: See Personal Protection to make sure wearing proper PPE when performing the below procedure.

Remove

  1. Remove the front subframe. See Subframe Assembly - Front (Dual Motor) (Remove and Install).
  2. Position the fluid catcher under the subframe and fixture assembly.
  3. Release the front drive unit inverter inlet hose from the 90 degree fluid coupling.
  4. Remove the bolts (x3) that attach the LH motor mount to the front drive unit, and then remove the mount from the front drive unit.
    35 Nm (25.8 lbs-ft) 55 degrees
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • E14 socket
  5. Remove the screw that attaches the front drive unit 90 degree fluid coupling to the drive inverter.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • T25 socket
  6. Remove the 90 degree fluid coupling from the drive inverter and discard it.

Install

  1. Lubricate the 90 degree fluid coupling O-ring with coolant.

    CAUTION
Do not install the fluid coupling with the O-ring dry.
  2. Install a new front drive unit 90 degree fluid coupling into the drive inverter.
  3. Install the screw that attaches the front drive unit 90 degree fluid coupling to the drive inverter.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • T25 socket
  4. Install the coolant pressure test plug adapter to straight fluid coupling.

    Note
Make sure the locking clip is fully seated
  6. Attach the coolant pressure tester to the pressure fitting adapter.
  7. Close both valves P1 (inlet) and P2 (outlet) on the test fixture, and connect a compressed air supply line.
  8. Set the pressure regulator of the test fixture to 50 psi.
  9. Slowly open the P2 valve on the pressure regulator. and allow the pressure to reach specification.
  10. Close the valve, wait 16 seconds for the pressure to settle, and then record the reading.
  11. Wait another 12 seconds, and then record the reading. The maximum delta is 0.10 psi.

    Note
If the pressure test fails, check the coolant hose to see if it is fully seated.
  12. Disconnect the air supply from the test fixture.
  13. Remove the pressure fitting adapter from the coolant pressure tester.
  14. Remove the coolant pressure tester from the 55 degree fluid coupling.
  15. Remove the coolant pressure test plug adapter from straight fluid coupling.
  16. Position the LH motor mount to the front drive unit, and then install the bolts (x3) that attach the mount to the front drive unit.
    35 Nm (25.8 lbs-ft) 55 degrees
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • E14 socket
  17. Connect the front drive unit inverter inlet hose to the 90 degree fluid coupling, install the spring clip, and then perform a push-pull-push test to make sure the hose if fully seated.
  18. Install the front subframe. See Subframe Assembly - Front (Dual Motor) (Remove and Install).
