Rear Halfshafts - Halfshaft - Pair (Remove and Replace)

Procedure

  1. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  3. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  4. In Toolbox, click the Actions/Autodiag tab, and search for "EPB".
  5. Click PROC_EPBL_START-SERVICE-MODEvia Toolbox: (link), click Run, and allow the routine to complete.

    Chock wheel if necessary.
  6. Click PROC_EPBR_START-SERVICE-MODEvia Toolbox: (link), click Run, and allow the routine to complete.

    Hold down brake pedal while performing routine.
  7. Disconnect Toolbox and remove the laptop from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  8. Remove the LH and RH rear wheel caps. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
  9. Loosen the LH and RH rear wheel lug nuts.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  10. Loosen the LH and RH rear halfshaft bolts.
    200 Nm (147.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  11. Raise the vehicle fully.
  12. Remove the LH and RH rear wheels.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  13. Remove the LH rear halfshaft bolt.
    200 Nm (147.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  14. Release the connector lock, and then disconnect the EPB harness connector from the LH rear brake caliper.
  15. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear brake line to the upper control arm, and then release the brake line from the control arm.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  16. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the knuckle, and then use an S-hook hang the caliper aside.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)

    Note
    Route the caliper hose so that it does not get caught on stabilizer bar assembly.

    Hang the caliper from the body.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  17. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH rear upper control arm to the knuckle.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)

    CAUTION
    Move the brake hose aside to avoid damage.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  18. Wrap the halfshaft removal cable around the inner joint of the LH rear halfshaft, and then install and hand tighten the U-bolt and fasteners (x2).
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  19. Use the slide hammer with the cable eyelets to release the LH rear halfshaft.

    CAUTION
    Be careful when removing the halfshaft from the vehicle to avoid damage to the halfshaft boots and oil seals.
  20. Position the LH rear halfshaft into the vehicle, and with the axle straight, apply pressure inwards until the C-clip clicks into position.
    Tip: Position the C-clip opening at bottom of axle to ease installation.

    Make sure the axle is fully seated into the drive unit.

    An audible click indicates the C-clip is fully engaged.

    If an audible click is not heard, adjust the shaft position and reinstall.
  21. Install a new nut that attaches the upper control arm to the knuckle.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)

    Make sure the brake hose is properly routed.

    Note
    Counter-hold the joint to install the nut.
    Tip: Support the suspension to ease installation.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  22. Engage the LH rear halfshaft to the LH rear hub assembly, and then install and hand-tighten the halfshaft bolt until the bolt flange is seated on the hub.

    Note
    After positioning the halfshaft against the hub, rotate the hub until the splines click. If splines are properly engaged, the hub will rotate halfshaft.

    Note
    With the halfshaft properly engaged with the hub assembly, tighten the bolt so that the bolt flange is seated on the hub. This will prevent accidental spline disengagement until the bolt is torqued.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  23. Position the LH rear brake caliper to the knuckle, and install the bolts (x2) that attach the caliper to the knuckle.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  24. Position the LH rear brake line to the upper control arm, and then install the bolt that attaches the brake line to the control arm.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  25. Connect the EPB harness connector to the LH rear brake caliper, and then engage the connector lock.
  26. Repeat step 13 through step 25 for the RH rear halfshaft.
  27. Install the LH and RH wheels, and install and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  28. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.
  29. Tighten the LH and RH rear halfshaft bolts.
    200 Nm (147.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  30. Tighten the LH and RH wheel lug nuts.
    205 Nm (151.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  31. Install the LH and RH rear wheel caps. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
  32. Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  33. Exit Service mode. See Service Mode.
  34. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
