Rear Halfshafts - Halfshaft - Pair (Remove and Replace)

Procedure
- Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
- Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
- Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
- In Toolbox, click the Actions/Autodiag tab, and search for "EPB".

Click PROC_EPBL_START-SERVICE-MODEvia Toolbox: (link),
click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
NoteChock wheel if necessary.

Click PROC_EPBR_START-SERVICE-MODEvia Toolbox: (link),
click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
CAUTIONThe vehicle may roll freely.NoteHold down brake pedal while performing routine.
- Disconnect Toolbox and remove the laptop from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
- Remove the LH and RH rear wheel caps. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).

Loosen the LH and RH rear wheel lug
nuts.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket

Loosen the LH and RH rear halfshaft
bolts.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 24 mm socket
- Raise the vehicle fully.

Remove the LH and RH rear
wheels.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket
-
Remove the LH rear halfshaft
bolt.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 24 mm socket

Release the connector lock, and then
disconnect the EPB harness connector from the LH rear brake caliper.

Remove the bolt that attaches the LH
rear brake line to the upper control arm, and then release the brake line from the
control arm.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 10 mm socket

Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the
LH rear brake caliper to the knuckle, and then use an S-hook hang the caliper
aside.NoteRoute the caliper hose so that it does not get caught on stabilizer bar assembly.NoteHang the caliper from the body.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket

Remove and discard the nut that
attaches the LH rear upper control arm to the knuckle.CAUTIONMove the brake hose aside to avoid damage.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket

Wrap the halfshaft removal cable
around the inner joint of the LH rear halfshaft, and then install and hand tighten the
U-bolt and fasteners (x2).
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 10 mm socket

Use the slide hammer with the cable
eyelets to release the LH rear halfshaft.
CAUTIONBe careful when removing the halfshaft from the vehicle to avoid damage to the halfshaft boots and oil seals.

Position the LH rear halfshaft into
the vehicle, and with the axle straight, apply pressure inwards until the C-clip clicks
into position.
Tip: Position the C-clip opening at bottom of axle to ease installation.NoteMake sure the axle is fully seated into the drive unit.NoteAn audible click indicates the C-clip is fully engaged.NoteIf an audible click is not heard, adjust the shaft position and reinstall.

Install a new nut that attaches the
upper control arm to the knuckle.NoteMake sure the brake hose is properly routed.NoteCounter-hold the joint to install the nut.Tip: Support the suspension to ease installation.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket

Engage the LH rear halfshaft to the LH rear hub assembly, and then install and
hand-tighten the halfshaft bolt until the bolt flange is seated on the hub.
NoteAfter positioning the halfshaft against the hub, rotate the hub until the splines click. If splines are properly engaged, the hub will rotate halfshaft.NoteWith the halfshaft properly engaged with the hub assembly, tighten the bolt so that the bolt flange is seated on the hub. This will prevent accidental spline disengagement until the bolt is torqued.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 24 mm socket

Position the LH rear brake caliper to the knuckle, and install the bolts (x2) that
attach the caliper to the knuckle.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket

Position the LH rear brake line to the upper control arm, and then install the bolt
that attaches the brake line to the control arm.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 10 mm socket

Connect the EPB harness connector to the LH rear brake caliper, and then engage the
connector lock.
- Repeat step 13 through step 25 for the RH rear halfshaft.

Install the LH and RH wheels, and
install and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket
- Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.

Tighten the LH and RH rear halfshaft bolts.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 24 mm socket

Tighten the LH and RH wheel lug nuts.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket
- Install the LH and RH rear wheel caps. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
- Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
- Exit Service mode. See Service Mode.
- Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
