Drive Unit - Front (Remove and Install)

Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  3. Open the powered frunk.
  4. Place the vehicle into Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  5. Access thermal system routines using the UI

    Select quick controls > Service mode > Diagnostics > Thermal, Authorize routines by holding right turn signal, depressing brake pedal for 10 seconds with key on phone dock
  6. Touch Coolant System to enter coolant circuit screen. Touch Coolant Fill/Drain and then "PROC_VCFRONT_X_START-THERMAL-FILL-DRAIN-COOLANT' window appears. Touch Run.

    Thermal Fill Drain routine has a 50 minute time limit.
  7. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Install).
  8. Disconnect MV power. See Disconnect MV Power (Modify).
  9. Verify operation of multimeter

    Set multimeter to DC voltage, Confirm multimeter is properly measuring voltage by testing MV battery, Touch lightly and do not damage terminals
  10. Remove mid aero shield. See Skid Plate - Rear (Remove and Install).
  11. Remove all items from pockets and ensure not wearing metal items
  12. Inspect HV insulating gloves

  13. Put on HV insulating gloves and leather over gloves
  14. Verify no HV - Install amp clamp to RDU HV harness

    Verify meter is zeroed out before performing measurement, Measure single cable. Verify ammeter is installed in correct direction. If current > 0.5A do not proceed with disconnecting HV connector. In this case, start vehicle electrical isolation again to make sure that all was properly shut down. Escalate for assistance as requiredIf current < 0.5A, Ok to disconnect and check voltage at HV plug on the battery side.Release locking tab and rotate the release lever up to disengage the connector, Release harness clip, Do not force the release lever up, Ensure the alignment tabs on the RDU header are not damagedMake sure to wear PPE (HV gloves, safety glasses) when working on high voltage component, Measure B+ to Ground, B- to Ground, B+ to B-, If voltage is greater than 10V, Pack contactors are not open or welded, Stop work and reach out to Service Engineering
  15. Remove leather over gloves and HV insulating gloves
  16. Remove the front aero shield. See Aeroshield - Front (Remove and Install).
  17. Remove front skid plate

    8x nuts, 15mm, 50 Nm, 2x bolts, 11mm, 50 Nm
  18. Remove the bolts (x3) that attach the LH lower control arm shield, and then remove the shield from the vehicle. Repeat this step for the RH lower control arm shield.
    7 Nm (5.2 lbs-ft)

  19. Lower vehicle partially and set lift onto locks

    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered, Set vehicle to comfortable working height
  20. Remove the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  21. Remove the frunk assembly. See Frunk Assembly (Remove and Install).
  22. Remove the front center applique. See Front Center Applique Assembly (Remove and Install).
  23. Remove the front fascia. See Front Fascia (Remove and Install).
  24. Remove the cooling fan module. See Module - Cooling Fan (Remove and Install).
  25. Remove powertrain return hose from FDU and plug connections

  26. Disconnect powertrain return hose and plug connections

  27. Disconnect the steering rack electrical connectors (x4).

  28. Disconnect the front drive unit breather.

  31. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)

  32. Remove LH front caliper and set aside

  33. Release LH chassis jumper harness from knuckle

  34. Release LH front damper from lower control arm

  35. Remove nut securing LH front upper control arm to knuckle

  36. Remove RH front brake hose bracket

  41. Raise vehicle fully

  42. Release RH front wheel liner from HV battery chinstrap

  43. Position coolant drain container underneath RH front of HV battery
  44. Disconnect powertrain supply hoses and plug connections

  48. Install subframe fixture to subframe lifting tool

  49. Move the subframe lifting tool underneath the front subframe area
  50. Connect air supply to subframe lifting tool

  52. Position rear support posts onto FDU

    Both FDU supports need to engage the FDU, The left side post is dimpled and fits into a recess on the FDU and the right side post has a teflon block that sits against the FDU, Both posts are threaded and the handle should be turned until the posts are tight

  130. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Install).
  131. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  132. Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  133. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  134. Review wheel alignment requirements and add correction code as needed
