Front Halfshafts - Halfshaft - Pair (Remove and Replace)

Procedure

  1. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  3. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  4. In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, and search for "TAS service run".
  5. Click TAS Enter Service Run Mode, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  6. In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, and search for "TAS deflate".
  7. Click TAS Deflate Component, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  8. Click Rear Axle, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  9. Remove the LH and RH front wheel covers. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
  10. Loosen the LH and RH front wheel lug nuts.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  11. Loosen the LH and RH front halfshaft bolts.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  12. Raise the vehicle to a comfortable working height.
  13. Remove the LH and RH front wheels.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  14. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front halfshaft.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  15. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm deep socket
  16. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front caliper to the knuckle, and then set the caliper aside with an S-hook
    315 Nm (232.3 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket

    Note
    The rotor will be loose until the caliper is installed.
  17. Remove the LH front brake rotor from the hub.
  18. Remove the nut that attaches the LH tie rod end to the knuckle.
    170 Nm (125.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  19. Remove the LH tie rod end from the knuckle.
  20. Disconnect the LH front wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  21. Remove the clips (x2) that attach the LH front chassis jumper electrical harness to the knuckle.
  22. Release the clips (x4) that attach the LH front air spring module cover to the air spring module assembly, and then release the cover from the assembly.

    Note
    Do not remove the cover from the brake hose.
  23. Position and raise the pole jack onto the LH front lower control arm.
  24. Remove the nut that attaches the LH front upper control arm to the knuckle.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)

    Note
    Use a step ladder as needed.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm socket
  25. Lower and remove the pole jack from the LH front lower control arm.
  26. Wrap the halfshaft removal cable around the inner joint of the LH front halfshaft, and then install and hand tighten the U-bolt and fasteners (x2).
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  27. Use the slide hammer with the cable eyelets to release the LH front halfshaft.

    CAUTION
    Be careful when removing the halfshaft from the vehicle to avoid damage to the halfshaft boots and oil seals.
  28. Position the LH front halfshaft into the vehicle, and with the axle straight, apply pressure inwards until the C-clip clicks into position.
    Tip: Position the C-clip opening at bottom of axle to ease installation.

    Make sure the axle is fully seated into the drive unit.

    An audible click indicates the C-clip is fully engaged.

    Note
    If an audible click is not heard, adjust the shaft position and reinstall.
  29. Position the LH front halfshaft onto the LH front knuckle, and then rotate the hub until the splines are properly engaged.

    Hold the knuckle against the halfshaft, and then rotate the hub until the splines click.

    Note
    If splines are properly engaged, the hub will rotate halfshaft.
  30. With the halfshaft properly engaged, install and hand-tighten the LH front halfshaft bolt until the bolt flange is seated to the hub.

    Note
    Make sure to tighten the bolt so that the bolt flange is seated on the hub. This will prevent accidental spline disengagement until the bolt is torqued.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  31. Position and raise the pole jack onto the LH front lower control arm.
  32. Install a new nut that attaches the LH front upper control arm to the knuckle.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)

    Use a step ladder as needed.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm socket
  33. Lower and remove the pole jack from the LH front lower control arm.
  34. Attach the LH front air spring module cover to the air spring module assembly.
  35. Install the clips (x2) that attach the LH front chassis jumper electrical harness to the knuckle.
  36. Connect the LH front wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  37. Position the LH tie rod end onto the knuckle.
  38. Install the nut that attaches the LH tie rod end to the knuckle.
    170 Nm (125.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  39. Position the LH front brake rotor.

    Note
    The rotor will be loose until the caliper is installed.
  40. With assistance, install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front caliper to the knuckle.
    315 Nm (232.3 lbs-ft)

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  41. Install the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm deep socket
  42. Repeat step 14 through step 41 for the RH front halfshaft.
  43. Install the LH and RH front wheels, and install and hand tighten the lug nuts.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  44. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.
  45. Install and torque the LH and RH front halfshaft bolts.
    200 Nm (147.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  46. Tighten the LH and RH front wheel lug nuts.
    205 Nm (151.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  47. Install the LH and RH front wheel covers. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
  48. On the vehicle touchscreen, navigate to Service > Chassis > Suspension > Normal to place the vehicle in TAS normal mode.
  49. Verify operation of the air suspension.

    Note
    Cycle ride height via touchscreen. Navigate to Controls > Suspension > ''Low'' - 'High''.

    All doors must be closed to allow ride height to cycle.
  50. Set the suspension back to ''Standard''.
  51. Exit Service mode. See Service Mode.
  52. Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  53. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
