Windshield Assembly (Remove and Replace)

Warning
This procedure is a DRAFT. Although it has been validated, Warnings and Cautions might be missing. Follow safety requirements and use extreme caution when working on or near High Voltage systems and components.
CAUTION
New glass components (windshield, roof, door, and fixed glass) must be inspected before installation to meet Tesla’s internal standards of quality. Perform the inspection described in Pre-Installation Glass Inspection before beginning this procedure.

Remove

  1. Open LH front door
    Note
    Push LH B-pillar door trigger to release
  2. Fold mirrors
    Note
    Settings> Control> Fold
  3. Lower LH front window
  4. Open RH front door
    Note
    Push RH B-pillar door trigger to release
  5. Lower RH front window
  6. Open powered front trunk
    Note
    Via exterior switch or UI
  7. Remove rear underhood apron
    Note
    9x clips
  8. Remove front header trim
    Note
    19x clips, 1x magnet, 1x connector, 1x harness clip
  9. Remove LH mid A-pillar trim
    Note
    1x clip, 3x tabs, Release tabs then slightly bend live hinge and release clip
  10. Disconnect LH upper A-pillar connector
    Note
    1x connector, Release lower A-pillar trim as needed
  11. Remove LH upper A-pillar panel
    Note
    8x clips, 1x tether clip, 1x harness clip, 1x connector, 1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm, Pull inwards to release, Depress tabs on either side of tether clip to release, Apply tape onto top pad to prevent damage
  12. Remove LH IP quarter panel
    Note
    3x large clips, 3x small clips, 2x datums, 3x doghouses, Release small inner clips then locate doghouses, Break doghouse walls to release from panel, Remove panel then remove doghouses and clips, Protect IP as needed, If IP is damaged then proceed to replacement, Panel is single use, Discard after removal
  13. Remove LH A-pillar forward trim

    4x clips, 1x guide
  14. Remove LH sun visor
    Note
    2x bolts, 10mm, 6 Nm, 1x connector, 1x tab
  15. Remove RH mid A-pillar trim
    Note
    1x clip, 3x tabs, Release tabs then slightly bend live hinge and release clip
  16. Remove RH upper A-pillar panel
    Note
    8x clips, 1x harness clip, 1x connector, 1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm, Pull inwards to release
  17. Remove RH IP quarter panel
    Note
    3x clips, 3x tabs, 2x datums
  18. Remove RH A-pillar forward
    Note
    4x clips, 1x guide
  19. Remove RH sun visor
    Note
    2x bolts, 10mm, 6 Nm, 1x connector, 1x tab
  20. Remove PRND + Hazard switch assembly
    Note
    1x connector, 2x clips, Pull straight down to release, Do not allow assembly to hang from harness, Revision G will be required for retrofit
  21. Remove rearview mirror stay arm cap
    Note
    Release clips from bottom and pivot away to remove
  22. Remove rearview mirror
    Note
    1x screw, T20, 2 Nm
  23. Remove rearview mirror beauty cover
    Note
    1x harness clip, 3x connectors, 4x clips, Release locking tab
  24. Disconnect GNSS antenna
    Note
    1x connector, Release locking tab
  25. Disconnect THS sensor
    Note
    1x connector
  26. Remove glare shield from windshield bracket
    Note
    2x securing tabs
  27. Remove forward facing camera assembly from windshield bracket
    Note
    4x screws, T10, 1 Nm
  28. Remove windshield harness
    Note
    3x connectors, 4x clips, 1x bracket, 2x bracket clips
  29. Remove sunvisor track assembly
    Note
    Carefully cut urethane with glazing blade. Revision D track will need to be replaced with revision E track, if necessary. Use glass cleaner as a lubricant for the blade if necessary.
    Tip
    This part is removed to provide room for the equalizer glass removal tool in a later step.
  30. Remove wiper nut cover
    Note
    1x cap
  31. Release washer fluid hose connection
    Note
    1x hose elbow, Gently pry upwards to release
  32. Remove wiper arm nut
    Note
    1x nut, 18mm, 45 Nm, Do not use power tools on nut
  33. Remove wiper arm
    Note
    Use Cybertruck wiper arm removal tool if available, If unavailable gently lift and rock arm fore and aft, Ensure washer hose connection does not get pinched, Do not pry against windshield applique or glass
  34. Remove wiper applique
    Note
    2x clips, 2x datums, Release inboard clip from underneath by squeezing the edges while applying upward pressure, Release 2x datums using a plastic trim tool and walking around the top perimeter of the applique, Release the outboard clip with a clip prytool
  35. Remove windshield edge seals
    Note
    4x seals
  36. Set up equalizer glass removal tool
    Note
    Apply tape 5 inches from blade edge
  37. Release datums from windshield
    Note
    2x datums, Insert blade between urethane and glass, Insert blade about 5 inches, sharpen blade as needed, apply lubricant or spray soapy water as needed around bead to get a smooth cut
  38. Equalize inner top unseamed bead
    Note
    Insert blade between urethane and glass, Insert blade about 4 inches, sharpen blade as needed, apply lubricant or spray soapy water as needed around inner bead to get a smooth cut
  39. Prepare WRD Spider 3 glass removal kit
  40. Secure start of line to starter tool and push tool through urethane at lower LH side of windshield
    Note
    Pierce tool between urethane and glass, Use guard to prevent damage to dash pad
  41. Release line from starter tool and wrap line around exterior of windshield
    Note
    Verify line sits between urethane and glass and does not get caught on other components or body panels
  42. Secure end of line to starter tool and push tool through urethane at lower LH side of windshield
    Note
    Pierce tool between urethane and glass, Use guard to prevent damage to dash pad
  43. Attach anchor point to interior of windshield and secure end of line
    Note
    Attach line to anchor once fully wrapped around windshield, Place anchor near starting point of the handle tool
  44. Secure start of line to spider cutting tool
    Note
    Follow instructions on spider tool, Feed line through opening of tool and tie a knot to secure in place, If spindle is not turned in indicated direction then tool will be damaged
  45. Secure spider cutting tool to interior side of windshield
    Note
    Note orientation of cutting line, Make sure line wraps over large pulley and holds at a 90 degree angle
  46. Secure angle driver to electric drill
  47. Use WRD Spider 3 glass removal kit to cut urethane securing windshield to body
    Note
    Make sure to cut between urethane and glass, Use dash protector to avoid damaging body, trims and VIN plate. When cutting around corners and high tension areas. Slowly double tap the trigger of the drill, this will decrease the risk of line snapping during cut.
  48. Secure suction cups onto windshield
    Note
    2x suction cups each side
  49. Remove windshield from vehicle
    Note
    Recommend assistance, Have 3 others aid in removal of windshield
  50. Remove old urethane from vehicle
  51. Clean urethane path on vehicle
    Note
    Allow 1 minute dry time, Perform before applying primer
  52. Disconnect windshield heater harness
    Note
    1x connector, Partially release LH upper A-pillar trim for access

Install

CAUTION
Use soft materials to protect the windshield and to prevent scratching. Verify that the rubber strip completely separates the windshield from the metal components of the body.
  1. Clean the windshield as needed. Take special caution to the forward-facing camera area to ensure a clear view of the forward-facing camera. See Clean Forward Camera View (Precision Cleaning of Inboard Glass).
  2. Place new windshield on support stand (1054720-00-A).

    Clean and inspect as needed
  3. Release suction cups from old windshield
    Note
    2x suction cups each side
  4. Secure suction cups onto new windshield
    Note
    2x suction cups each side
  5. Clean urethane path on windshield
    Note
    Allow 1 minute dry time, Perform before applying primer
  6. Apply urethane primer to windshield and vehicle body along old urethane path
    Note
    Make sure to add primer over any areas that were scratched during windshield removal, Allow primer to dry for 2 minutes before applying urethane
  7. Prepare caulking gun and urethane
    Note
    Opening must be 8mm wide and 14mm tall
  8. Apply urethane following primer path on windshield
    Note
    4x tubes of urethane
  9. Position windshield onto vehicle
    Note
    Recommend assistance, Apply pressure to all four corners as needed
  10. Apply tape to secure windshield onto body while urethane cures
  11. Remove suction cups from windshield
  12. Close powered front trunk
    Note
    Via frunk switch or UI
  13. Check gap and flush on windshield
    Note
    Refer to CVIS for current gap/flush measurements: https://quality.prd2.dt.teslamotors.com/, Open and close frunk as needed
  14. Perform wiper motor homing.
    1. Press the wiper button on the steering wheel.
    2. Select speed level 3.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Turn the wiper off via the touchscreen.
  15. Open powered front trunk

  16. Install wiper applique
    Note
    2x clips, Replace any damaged clips
  17. Install wiper arm
    Note
    Align arm with mark on LH upper area of windshield, 1x nut, 18mm, 45 Nm, Do not use power tools on nut, Recommend assistance to hold wiper arm in place while tightening nut
  18. Check wiper arm alignment
    Note
    Perform wiper motor homing, check Alignment of arm with mark on LH upper area of windshield, check gap between wiper motor linkage and wiper motor housing, 3mm +/- 1mm, If not aligned then remove wiper arm and re-install and re-measure
  19. Secure washer fluid hose connection
    Note
    1x hose elbow, Ensure hose is fully seated
  20. Install wiper nut cover
    Note
    1x cap, Ensure cover is fully seated
  21. Install rear underhood apron
    Note
    9x clips, Adjust windshield seal as required
  22. Connect windshield heater harness
    Note
    1x connector, Partially release LH upper A-pillar trim for access
  23. Install LH sun visor
    Note
    2x bolts, 10mm, 6 Nm, 1x connector, 1x tab
  24. Install LH A-pillar forward trim
    Note
    4x clips, 1x guide
  25. Install LH IP quarter panel
    Note
    3x large clips, 3x small clips, 2x datums, 3x doghouses, Position then secure clips, If IP is damaged then proceed to replacement, Panel is single use, Install new panel
  26. Install LH upper A-pillar panel
    Note
    8x clips, 1x tether clip, 1x edge clip, 1x connector, 1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm, Ensure tethers are correctly oriented, Replace any missing or damaged clips, Remove tape as needed
  27. Connector LH upper A-pillar connector
    Note
    1x connector, Secure lower A-pillar trim as needed
  28. Install windshield harness
    Note
    3x connectors, 4x clips, 1x bracket, 2x bracket clips
  29. Install RH sun visor
    Note
    2x bolts, 10mm, 6 Nm, 1x connector, 1x tab
  30. Install RH A-pillar forward trim
    Note
    4x clips, 1x guide
  31. Install RH IP quarter panel
    Note
    3x clips, 3x tabs, 2x datums
  32. Install RH upper A-pillar panel
    Note
    8x clips, 1x tether clip, 1x edge clip, 1x connector, 1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm, Ensure tethers are correctly oriented, Replace any missing or damaged clips
  33. Install RH mid A-pillar trim
    Note
    1x clip, 3x tabs, Replace any missing or damaged clips
  34. Secure forward facing camera assembly onto windshield bracket
    Note
    4x patch screws, T10, 1 Nm
  35. Install glare shield onto windshield bracket
    Note
    2x clips
  36. Connect THS Sensor
    Note
    1x connector
  37. Connect GNSS antenna
    Note
    1x connector, Engage locking tab
  38. Install rear view mirror beauty cover
    Note
    1x harness clip, 2x connectors, 4x clips, Connect connector then secure to harness clip, Connect coaxial then secure locking tab, Replace any damaged or missing clips
  39. Install rearview mirror
    Note
    1x screw, T20, 2 Nm
  40. Install rearview mirror stay arm cap
    Note
    Align top of cover with mirror then engage lower clips
  41. Install PRND + Hazard switch assembly
    Note
    1x connector, 2x clips, Replace any missing or damaged clips, Push firmly into place to secure, Revision G will be required for retrofit
  42. Install front header trim
    Note
    19x clips, 1x magnet, 1x connector, 1x harness clip, Replace any missing or damaged clips
  43. Run ODIN routine PROC_ICE_X_ENTER-SERVICE-MODEvia Toolbox:(link)
  44. Unlock vehicle gateway
    Note
    After vehicle has been put into "Service Mode", place keycard on center console to turn on drive rails, hold down the brake pedal, while keep pressing right hand signal button simultaneously for at least 10 seconds, "GTW UNLOCKING" should pop up on the UI right next to the VIN during these 10 seconds, once gateway is unlocked "GTW UNLOCKED 5400" will be displayed on the UI next to the VIN, the gateway will remain unlocked for 90 minutes, follow steps on Toolbox article #5582900 for any additional information
  45. Reinstall firmware via UI
    Note
    Via Controls > Service Mode > Software Reinstall, Select Reinstall button at Software Reinstall dialogue box, Reinstall will begin immediately, Once firmware redeploy is complete, Verify release notes are present via UI
  46. Confirm successful CAN Redeploy
  47. Clear the Forward Facing camera calibration. Run ODIN routinePROC_DAS_X_CLEAR-CALIBRATIONvia Service Mode:
    • Driver Assist ➜ Cameras ➜ Clear Camera Calibration
    • Driver Assist ➜ Driverless ➜ Clear Calibration

  49. Close powered front trunk

  53. Unfold mirrors

    Settings> Control> Unfold Mirrors
  54. Close LH front door
  55. Perform test drive
    Note
    Perform a validation test drive after repair. Confirm DAS completes calibration successfully, if unsuccessful perform pitch verification and adjustment - Correction code 17230600. Add correction code 00040100 as needed
