Wheels - Wheel (Remove and Install)

Warning
This procedure is a DRAFT. Although it has been validated, Warnings and Cautions might be missing. Follow safety requirements and use extreme caution when working on or near High Voltage systems and components.
Warning
Always read and understand the tire equipment operator’s manual and on-screen instructions before operating the wheel balancer or tire changer.
Warning
Always make sure to properly secure the wheel, and that no one moves close to any moving parts when in use. Additionally, make sure your hair, jewlery, and clothing will not get caught by moving parts.
Warning
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses when performing this procedure.
Warning
The machine must be operated by no more than one person at a time. Other persons must maintain a safe distance of at least three feet from equipment while in use.
Warning
Never use equipment that is defective or not working as expected based on the equipment operator’s manual.

Remove

  1. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle on a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  3. Remove the LH front wheel cap. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
  4. Remove the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  5. Place the wheel and tire on the tire machine and secure.
    Note
    x1 wheel clamp
  6. Remove the valve stem cap.
  7. Remove the valve stem core.
    CAUTION
    Exercise caution as tire rapidly deflate.
    Note
    Wear appropriate PPE.
  8. Rotate the wheel and tire so that upper roller is ~100 mm in front of the valve stem.
    Warning
    Failure to properly position valve stem can result in TPMS damage.
  9. Break the tire beads.
    Note
    Lubricate as required.
  10. Remove the tire from the wheel.
    Note
    Make sure to position the TPMS sensor ahead of the tire machine arm.

Install

  1. Thoroughly lubricate both tire beads, and then position for installation.
    Note
    Make sure to position the TPMS sensor opposite the tire machine arm.
    Note
    Ensure wheel cover design side of tire is facing outwards.
  2. Install the tire to wheel.
    CAUTION
    Use caution to avoid damage to beads.
    Note
    Apply additional lubricant as required.
  3. Inflate the tire to seat the beads.
    CAUTION
    Do not exceed the pressure indicated on the tire sidewall.
    Note
    Wear PPE.
    Note
    Ensure inside and outside beads are seated.
  4. Install the valve core stem.
    Note
    Hand tight only. Do not overtighten.
  5. Remove the wheel and tire from the tire changer machine.
    Note
    x1 clamp
  6. Install the tire and wheel assembly onto the balancer.
    Note
    x1 6-lug wheel flange
    Note
    Position the wheel onto the spindle shaft, and then secure the wheel using the flange.
    Note
    If 6-lug wheel flange is unavailable, use 216mm Blue Hunter centering cone adapter.
  7. Remove the wheel weights.
  8. Verify tire pressure is set.
    Note
    Set to specification. Refer to "Tire and Loading Information" label located on driver side B-pillar.
    Note
    Install valve stem cap.
  9. Input wheel dimensions into balancer machine.
    Note
    If machine does not require manual input, then skip this step.
  10. Perform road force wheel balance.
    Note
    Follow machine instructions.
    Note
    Safety hood must be down to start balancing.
    Note
    Make sure load roller engages.
  11. Record road force wheel balance results.
    Note
    If road force is within limit, then skip to install wheel weights. If road force is outside limit, then proceed to force match.
  12. Perform the tire and wheel force match.
    Note
    Measure run out then mark tire and rim for reference points. Use machine to determine points to match on tire and wheel.
  13. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the balancer.
    Note
    1x 6-lug wheel flange
    Note
    Remove flange, and then remove the wheel from spindle shaft.
  14. Install the tire and wheel assembly on the tire machine.
    Note
    x1 wheel clamp
    Note
    Position wheel onto wheel support, and then secure wheel using clamp.
  15. Remove the valve stem cap.
  16. Remove the valve stem core.
    CAUTION
    Exercise caution as tire rapidly deflates.
    Note
    Wear appropriate PPE.
  17. Break the tire beads.
    Note
    Use lubrication around tire and wheel.
    Note
    Break top and bottom bead.
  18. Remove the tire from the wheel.
    Note
    Make sure to position TPMS sensor ahead of tire machine arm.
  19. Install tire onto the wheel matching previously marked points from balancer.
    Note
    Rotate tire to align with previously marked reference points .
  20. Inflate the tire to seat the bead.
    Note
    Recommend assistance.
    Note
    Lift tire while inflating.
    CAUTION
    Do not exceed pressure indicated on tire sidewall.
  21. Install the valve stem core.
    CAUTION
    Exercise caution as tire rapidly deflates
    Note
    Wear appropriate PPE.
  22. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the tire machine.
    Note
    x1 wheel clamp.
    Note
    Remove the clamp, and then remove wheel from the wheel support.
  23. Install the tire and wheel assembly onto the balancer.
    Note
    1x 6-lug wheel flange
    Note
    Position wheel onto spindle shaft, and then secure wheel using flange.
  24. Verify tire pressure is set.
    Note
    Set to specification. Refer to "Tire and Loading Information" label located on driver side B-pillar.
    Note
    Install valve stem cap.
  25. Input the wheel dimensions into the balancer machine.
    Note
    If the machine does not require manual input, then skip this step.
  26. Perform road force wheel balance.
    Note
    Follow machine instructions.
    Note
    Safety hood must be down to start balancing.
    Note
    Make sure load roller engages.
  27. Install weights onto the wheel.
    Note
    Place weights on positions indicated by balancer.
  28. Perform check spin.
    Note
    Follow machine instructions.
    Note
    Safety hood must be down to start balancing.
    Note
    Make sure load roller engages.
  29. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the balancer.
    Note
    1x 6-lug wheel flange
    Note
    Remove flange, and then remove the wheel from the spindle shaft.
  30. Install the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  31. Install the LH front wheel cap. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
  32. Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  33. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
