Front Steering Gear and Lower Column - Front Steering Actuator (Remove and Install)

Remove

  1. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  2. Open the powered frunk.
  3. Place the vehicle into Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  4. Unlock the vehicle Gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).
  5. On the vehicle touchscreen, navigate to Service Mode Plus > Thermal > Actions.
  6. Tap Start Thermal Fill Drain (Coolant and Refrigerant), and allow the routine to complete.

  7. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Trim - Rear Apron Assembly (Remove and Install).
  8. Disconnect MV power. See Disconnect MV Power.
  9. Remove the frunk assembly. See Frunk Assembly (Remove and Install).
  10. Remove the LH and RH front wheel caps. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
  11. Remove the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  12. Remove the lower valence bolts (x6).
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket

    Note
    Release the covers (x2) to expose the bolts.
  13. Remove the front aeroshield. See Undertray - Front Aeroshield (Remove and Install).
  14. Disconnect the Coolant Fan Module (CFM) electrical connectors (x2).
  15. Remove the front fascia. See Front Bumper Fascia - Front Fascia (Remove and Install).
  16. Lower the vehicle partially.
  17. Release the harness from the CFM.

    Pull the red locking tab to disengage the louver connector.

    Release the temperature sensor, and then disconnect. Release the grommet, and then pull the harness through from the frunk area.
  18. Place a coolant catcher below the radiator.
  19. Release the spring clip, disconnect the radiator to manifold hose from the radiator, and then plug the fittings.
  20. Release the spring clip, disconnect the manifold to radiator hose from the radiator, and then plug the fittings.
  21. Remove the upper CFM fasteners (x2).
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)

    The upper fasteners are accessible from the frunk area.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  22. Raise the vehicle fully.
  23. Remove the lower CFM fasteners (x2).
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  24. Remove the fore crossmember bolts (x2).
    90 Nm (66.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm socket

    Push up on the CFM . Use a hammer, if needed.
  25. With assistance, remove the CFM.

    Remove from below the impact beam.

    CAUTION
    Make sure the harness is not pinched during removal.
  26. Lower the vehicle partially.
  27. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH steering rack tie rod to the knuckle. Repeat this step for the RH steering rack tie rod.
    170 Nm (125.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  28. Remove the front stabilizer bar. See Front Stabilizer Bar and Links - Front Bar 130 N/mm (Remove and Install).
  29. Release the connector locks, and then disconnect the harness electrical connectors (x4) to the steering rack.
  30. Remove the bolts(x2) that attach the steering actuator to the front subframe.
    175 Nm (129.1 lbs-ft)

  31. Remove the steering actuator from the vehicle.

    With an assistant, spin the actuator 180 degrees. This will put the connector heads on the bottom side closer to subframe. This will be the orientation going in and out.

Install

  1. Position the steering actuator assembly for installation.

    With an assistant, spin the actuator 180 degrees. This will put the connector heads on the bottom side closer to the front subframe. This will be the orientation going in and out.
  2. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the steering actuator to the front subframe.
    175 Nm (129.1 lbs-ft)

  3. Connect the steering rack harness electrical connectors (x4).

    Engage the locking tabs.
  4. Install the front stabilizer bar. See Front Stabilizer Bar and Links - Front Bar 130 N/mm (Remove and Install).
  5. Install the bolt that attaches the LH steering rack tie rod to the knuckle. Repeat this step for the RH tie rod.
    170 Nm (125.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket

    Verify weight is evenly distributed to ease installation.
  6. Raise the vehicle fully.
  7. With assistance, install the CFM into the vehicle.

    Make sure the harness is not pinched during install.
  8. Install the lower CFM fasteners (x2).
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)

  9. Install the fore crossmember bolts (x2).
    90 Nm (66.4 lbs-ft)

    Lift the CFM away from the beam to aid in clearance.

    Install the beam by sliding it rewards.
  10. Lower the vehicle partially.
  11. Install the upper CFM fasteners (x2).
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  12. Place a coolant catcher underneath the radiator.
  13. Remove the plugs, connect the manifold to radiator hose to the radiator, and secure the spring clip.

    Perform a push-pull-push test to ensure the hose is fully engaged.
  14. Remove the hose plugs, connect the radiator to manifold hose to the radiator, and then secure the spring clip.

  15. Secure the harness to the CFM.

    x1 grommet, x2 connector, x1 harness clip

    Secure the grommet, and then connect the temperature sensor.

    Engage the locking tab on the louver connector.
  16. Raise the vehicle partially.
  17. Install the front fascia. See Front Bumper Fascia - Front Fascia (Remove and Install).
  18. Install the LH and RH front wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  19. Raise the vehicle fully.
  20. Connect the CFM electrical connectors (x2), and then engage the connector locks.
  21. Install the front aeroshield. See Undertray - Front Aeroshield (Remove and Install).
  22. Install the lower valence bolts (x6).
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket

    Secure the covers.
  23. Install the frunk assembly. See Frunk Assembly (Remove and Install).
  24. Restore MV power. See Disconnect MV Power.
  25. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Trim - Rear Apron Assembly (Remove and Install).
  26. Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  27. Perform Handwheel calibration. See Set Handwheel Zero.
  28. Tap Front Rack Calibration and allow the routine to complete.

  29. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  30. Review wheel alignment requirements and add correction code as needed.
