Front Steering Gear and Lower Column - Front Steering Actuator (Remove and Install)

Remove
- Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
- Open the powered frunk.
- Place the vehicle into Service Mode. See Service Mode.
- Unlock the vehicle Gateway. See Gateway (Unlock).

On the vehicle touchscreen, navigate
to Service Mode
Plus > Thermal > Actions. and then tap Start Thermal Fill Drain (Coolant and
Refrigerant) and allow the routine to complete.
NoteMake sure the routine is successful.
- Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Trim - Rear Apron Assembly (Remove and Install).
- Disconnect MV power. See Disconnect MV Power.
- Remove the frunk assembly. See Frunk Assembly (Remove and Install).
- Remove the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
- Remove the cooling fan module. See Fan and Radiator - Cooling Fan Module (Remove and Install).
- Lower the vehicle partially.

Remove and discard the nut that
attaches the LH front tie rod to the LH front knuckle, and then release the tie rod from
the knuckle.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket

Remove the LH tie rod from the front
steering rack assembly.
NoteRecord the number of turns required to fully remove the tie rod from the steering rack assembly. This will aid in reinstalling the tie rod.

Remove the nut that attaches the RH
front tie rod to the RH front knuckle, and then release the tie rod from the
knuckle.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket

Release the connector locks, and then
disconnect the harness electrical connectors (x4) to the steering rack.

Remove the bolts(x2) that attach the
steering actuator to the front subframe.Note19 mm or 21 mm, may vary based on build.

With assistance, maneuver the steering
actuator assembly through the RH wheel well, and then lift the assembly through the
frunk area to remove it from the vehicle.
CAUTIONBe careful not to damage the actuator connector housing.
Install

With assistance, position the front
steering actuator assembly into the vehicle.
NoteManeuver the assembly through the frunk and into the RH wheel well. Adjust the LH side tie rod end link as needed.CAUTIONBe careful not to damage the actuator connector housing.

Install the bolts (x2) that attach the steering actuator to the front subframe.Note19 mm or 21 mm, may vary based on build.

Connect the steering rack harness
electrical connectors (x4), and then engage the connector locks.

Install the LH tie rod onto the front
steering rack assembly.
NoteTurn the tie rod end exactly the amount of rotations it took to remove. This ensures the alignment is as close as possible to original location.

Install a new nut that attaches the LH
steering rack tie rod to the knuckle. Repeat this step for the RH tie rod.NoteVerify weight is evenly distributed to ease installation.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 21 mm socket
- Raise the vehicle fully.
- Install the cooling fan module. See Fan and Radiator - Cooling Fan Module (Remove and Install).
- Install the front aeroshield. See Undertray - Front Aeroshield (Remove and Install).
- Install the frunk assembly. See Frunk Assembly (Remove and Install).
- Reconnect MV power. See Disconnect MV Power.
- Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Trim - Rear Apron Assembly (Remove and Install).
- Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
- Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
- Review wheel alignment requirements and add correction code as needed.
