Front Halfshafts - Halfshaft, 30.2mm X 597mm Shaft, Front (Remove and Install)

Remove

  1. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle on a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  3. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  4. In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, and then search for "TAS service run".
  5. Click TAS Enter Service Run Mode, and then click Run. Allow the routine to complete.

    Click X at top right of window to close once completed.
  6. Click the Actions tab, and then search for "TAS deflate".
  7. Click TAS Deflate Component, and then click Run. Allow the routine to complete.

    Select "FL" from the drop-down menu.

  8. Remove the LH front wheel cover. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
  9. Loosen the LH front wheel lug nuts (x6).
    205 Nm (151.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  10. Loosen the LH front halfshaft bolt.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  11. Fully raise the vehicle.
  12. Remove the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  13. Remove the LH front halfshaft bolt.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  14. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm deep socket
  15. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front caliper to the knuckle, and then set the caliper aside with an S-hook
    315 Nm (232.3 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket

    Note
    The rotor will be loose until the caliper is installed.
  16. Remove the LH front brake rotor from the hub.
  17. Remove the nut that attaches the LH tie rod end to the knuckle.
    170 Nm (125.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  18. Remove the LH tie rod end from the knuckle.
  19. Disconnect the LH front wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  20. Remove the clips (x2) that attach the LH front chassis jumper electrical harness to the knuckle.
  21. Release the clips (x4) that attach the LH front air spring module cover.

    Note
    Leave attached to brake hose.
  22. Position and raise the pole jack onto the LH front lower control arm.
  23. Remove the nut that attaches the LH front upper control arm to the knuckle.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm socket

    Use a step ladder as needed.
  24. Lower and remove the pole jack from the LH front lower control arm.
  25. Set up the halfshaft removal tool around the LH front inner halfshaft.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket

    Note
    Torque hand-tight.

    Wrap the cable around the inner joint, and then tighten with U-bolt.
  26. Remove the LH front halfshaft from the vehicle.

    Use slide hammer with cable eyelets to release.

    CAUTION
    To avoid damage to the halfshaft boots and oil seals, exercise caution when removing.

Install

  1. Secure the LH front halfshaft onto the front drive unit.

    Position the C-clip opening at the bottom of the axle to ease installation.

    CAUTION
    Make sure the axle is fully seated into drive unit. Straighten axle and apply pressure to opposite end until an audible click is heard, Audible click indicates the C-clip is fully engaged. If audible click is not heard, then adjust the halfshaft position and reinstall.
  2. Position the LH front halfshaft onto the LH front knuckle, and then rotate the hub until the splines are properly engaged.

    Hold the knuckle against the halfshaft, and then rotate the hub until the splines click.

    If splines are properly engaged, the hub will rotate halfshaft.
  3. With the halfshaft properly engaged, install and hand-tighten the LH front halfshaft bolt until the bolt flange is seated to the hub.

    Note
    Make sure to tighten the bolt so that the bolt flange is seated on the hub. This will prevent accidental spline disengagement until the bolt is torqued.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  4. Position and raise the pole jack onto the LH front lower control arm.
  5. Install the nut that attaches the LH front upper control arm to the knuckle.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm socket

    Note
    Use a step stool as needed.
  6. Lower and remove the pole jack from the LH front lower control arm.
  7. Secure the LH front air spring module cover.

    x4 clips
  8. Install the clips (x2) that attach the LH front chassis jumper electrical harness to the knuckle.
  9. Connect the LH front wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  10. Position the LH tie rod end onto the knuckle.
  11. Install the nut that attaches the LH tie rod end to the knuckle.
    170 Nm (125.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  12. Position the LH front brake rotor.

    The rotor will be loose until the caliper is installed.
  13. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front caliper to the knuckle.
    315 Nm (232.3 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket

    The rotor will be loose until the caliper is installed.
  14. Install the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the knuckle.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm deep socket
  15. Install the LH front wheel, and then hand tighten the wheel lug nuts.

    Tightening of the lug nuts will be performed later in this procedure.
  16. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.
  17. Tighten the LH front halfshaft bolt.
    200 Nm (147.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 24 mm socket
  18. Install the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  19. Install the LH front wheel cover. See Wheel Cover - Front - LH (Remove and Install).
  20. Re-establish connection with Toolbox 3. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  21. In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, and then search for "TAS normal".
  22. Click TAS Enter Normal Run Mode, and then click Run. Allow the routine to complete.

  23. Disconnect the laptop from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  24. Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  25. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
