Only technicians who have been trained in High Voltage Awareness and have completed all required certification courses (if applicable) are permitted to perform this procedure. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and insulating HV gloves with a minimum rating of class 0 (1000V) must be worn at all times a high voltage cable, busbar, or fitting is handled. CAUTION
The desiccant bag in the receiver dryer must be checked when replacing the A/C compressor to determine if debris resulting from failure of the compressor has entered the system. See Desiccant (Remove and Replace). If the desiccant bag requires replacement, refer to A/C Refrigerant (Unknown Oil Quantity) (Recovery, Flush, and Recharge).

Remove

  1. Set up the A/C machine.
  2. Attach the flush kit to the Waeco A/C machine with 2x 8mm bolts with Nyloc nuts.
  3. Open all four doors, lower all windows and move the front seats forward.

    Latch the rear doors to prevent accidental closing after the vehicle is powered down.
  4. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  5. Enable 'Service Mode Plus'. See Service Mode Plus.
  6. On the touchscreen, select Controls > Service Mode > Diagnostics > Thermal, and then select Start Thermal Fill Drain (Refrigerant Only).
  7. Power off the vehicle from the touchscreen.
  8. Disconnect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  9. Connect the A/C machine hose couplers to the vehicle and perform the A/C refrigerant recovery.

    Note
    Connect couplers to low and high side ports, open couplers by turning clockwise. After recovery, note the amount of refrigerant and oil recovered. If the drained oil level exceeds 30 mL refer to the drained oil loss chart.

    Recover the refrigerant while continuing this procedure.
  10. Perform the vehicle electical isolation procedure. See Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure.
  11. Remove the 12V battery. See 12V/LV Battery (Remove and Replace).
  12. Release the clips (x4) that attach the coolant hoses to the 12V battery bracket.
  13. Remove the rear battery tie down strap from the 12V battery bracket.

    Note
    The 12V battery bracket also serves as the A/C compressor bracket.
  14. Release the clip that attaches the 12V battery vent tube to the battery bracket.
  15. After refrigerent recovery is complete, remove the A/C machine hoses from the high and low pressure A/C ports on the vehicle.
  16. Remove the nut (torque 22 Nm) that attaches the low pressure fitting to the A/C compressor.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  17. Remove the nut (torque 22 Nm) that attaches the high pressure fitting to the A/C compressor, and then set the hose assembly aside.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  18. Connect the blue hose nipple to the low pressure adapter unit.

    Use a decent amount of Teflon tape to adapter unit 1600279-02-A.
  19. Connect the straight line R1234yf nipple to the high pressure adapter unit.

  20. Install the nut (torque 22 Nm) that attaches the low pressure adapter unit to the low pressure pipe of the A/C compressor.

    Before installing, inspect o-ring and replace if necessary.
  21. Install the nut (torque 22 Nm) that attaches the high pressure adapter unit to the high pressure pipe of the A/C compressor.

  22. Connect the 3/8'' blue line hose to the flush Unit
  23. Remove the liquid inline filter drier from the container and replace it with a new one.

    The copper O-rings can be reused when they are in good condition.

    Remove old Teflon tape from the threads and make sure to apply sufficient new Teflon tape on the threads.
  24. Connect the 3/8'' blue hose from the flush unit to the low pressure flush adapter unit.
  25. Connect the low pressure hose from the A/C machine to the quick connector of the filter.
  26. Connect the high pressure hose from the A/C machine to the high pressure flush adapter unit.
  27. On the Waeco AC machine, select Menu > Other selections > Flushing, input the vehicle details, then select select Full Flashing > Enter.

    A/C service machine requirement is that the tank should contain at least 13 lb (6 kg) of refrigerant to run the system flush.

    The flush procedure will take approximately 90 minutes.
  28. Release the connector locking tab, and then disconnect the low voltage electrical connector from the A/C compressor.

    CAUTION
    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.
  29. Release the clip that attaches the A/C compressor low voltage harness to the A/C compressor HV harness bracket.
  30. Remove the bolt that attaches the HV harness bracket to the A/C compressor.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
  31. Remove the bolt that attaches the ground strap to the A/C compressor, and then set the ground strap aside.

  32. Release the clip that attaches the coolant hose to the A/C compressor bracket.
  33. Pull the A/C compressor HV connector black locking tab away from the A/C compressor.
  34. Using a 45-degree pick, simultaneously push on the central locking tab while pulling on the outer locking tab, and remove the HV connector from the A/C compressor.
  35. Move the HV harness bracket forward and up to release the bracket from the A/C compressor, and then carefully set the bracket aside.
  36. With an assistant supporting the A/C compressor assembly, remove the bolts (x2) that attach the A/C compressor assembly to the strut tower brace, and then remove the A/C compressor assembly from the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
  37. Remove the bolts (x3) that attach the A/C compressor bracket to the A/C compressor, and then remove the bracket from the compressor.

  38. Protect the low and high pressure ports on the A/C compressor.

    Ports must be fully covered when cleaning the A/C compressor in the next step(s).
  39. Remove the NVH acoustic cover from the A/C compressor.

    The NVH acoustic cover must be removed to properly weigh the compressor.
  40. Remove any remaining NVH cover material from the A/C compressor.

    Remove as much remaining material of the NVH acoustic cover as possible. Excessive material left on the A/C compressor will cause an inaccurate weight measurement.

Install

  1. Use a digital scale to weigh the removed compressor and reset the oil quantity.

    Take note of the compressor weight and add A/C oil of the appripriate type (see Fluids and Capacities for A/C oil specifications) through the suction port of the compressor until it weighs 7193 grams (Denso compressor) or 7809 grams (Sanden compressor).
  2. Install a new NVH acoustic cover onto the A/C compressor
    1. Remove the adhesive backing , lay the NVH acoustic cover down with the adhesive side facing up, then align the cut outs of the NVH acoustic cover to the suction port on the A/C compressor,
    2. Continue to wrap NVH acoustic cover around the compressor
  3. Position the A/C compressor bracket on the A/C compressor, and then install the bolts that attach the bracket to the compressor.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
  4. With an assistant supporting the A/C compressor assembly under the strut tower brace, hand-start the bolts (x2) that attach the A/C compressor assembly to the brace, and then torque the bolts.

    Do not remove the caps from the A/C compressor yet.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
  5. Position the A/C compressor HV harness bracket on the A/C compressor.

    Make sure the HV harness bracket engages with the harness mount on the top of the A/C compressor.
  6. Fully seat the A/C compressor HV connector on the A/C compressor, and then engage the locking tab by pushing it toward the A/C compressor.

    Perform a push-pull test to verify that the connector is fully attached.
  7. Install the clip that attaches the coolant hose to the A/C compressor bracket, near the ground strap attachment point.
  8. Position the ground strap on the A/C compressor, and then install the bolt that attaches the ground strap to the A/C compressor.

    This bolt is self-tapping. It is not necessary to tap the compressor bolt hole.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
  9. Install the bolt that attaches the HV harness bracket to the A/C compressor.

  10. Install the clip that attaches the A/C compressor low voltage harness to the A/C compressor HV harness bracket.
  11. Connect the low voltage electrical connector to the A/C compressor, and then engage the locking tab.

    CAUTION
    Push the red locking tab towards the connector to engage the locking mechanism. DO NOT push down or pull up on the red locking tab.
  12. Install the clips (x4) that attach the coolant hoses to the A/C compressor bracket.
  13. Install the rear battery tie down strap on the 12V battery bracket.
  14. Install the clip that attaches the 12V battery vent tube to the 12V battery bracket.
  15. Install the 12V auxiliary battery. See 12V/LV Battery (Remove and Replace).
  16. Disconnect the A/C machine hoses from the A/C flush adapters.
  17. Remove the nuts that attach the flush adapters (x2) to the supermanifold to A/C compressor hose fittings, and then remove the flush adapters.
  18. Replace the o-rings on the high pressure and low pressure supermanifold to A/C compressor hose fittings.

  19. Position the supermanifold to A/C compressor high pressure fitting on the A/C compressor, and then install the nut that attaches the fitting to the A/C compressor.
    22 Nm (16.2 lbs-ft)

    • 13 mm deep socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  20. Position the supermanifold to A/C compressor low pressure fitting on the A/C compressor, and then install the nut that attaches the fitting to the A/C compressor.
    22 Nm (16.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  21. Connect the A/C machine red high pressure hose to the vehicle's high pressure port, and the blue low pressure hose to the vehicle's low pressure port.
  22. Follow the A/C machine instructions to perform a vacuum leak test for 2 minutes, and then run a vacuum for 15 more minutes to remove excess moisture from the system.
  23. Perform the A/C refrigerant recharge, but do not install the underhood storage unit or rear underhood apron yet. See Recharge.

    CAUTION
    Recharge the refrigerant exactly as instructed. Failure to adhere to the instructions can cause catastrophic damage to the cooling system.
  24. Connect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  25. On the touchscreen, selecct Quick Controls > Service Mode > Diagnostics > Thermal and then select Run Heat Pump Commissioning.
