Liftgate Glass (Remove and Install)

CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.

Remove

  1. Remove the rear trunk parcel shelf. See Parcel Shelf - Rear Trunk (Remove and Replace).
  2. Remove the rear trunk load floor. See Trunk Load Floor - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the lower liftgate trim. See Trim - Liftgate - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the liftgate speaker grille. See Grille - Speaker - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove the upper liftgate grim. See Trim - Upper - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  6. Disconnect the CHMSL electrical connector.
  7. Disconnect the LH antenna amplifier electrical connector, and then use masking tape to secure the harness onto the liftgate glass.
  8. Disconnect the LH antenna RF filter electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the RH antenna amplifier electrical connector, and then use masking tape to secure the harness onto the liftgate glass.
  10. Disconnect the RH antenna RF filter electrical connector.
  11. Apply tape to the body surrounding the liftgate glass assembly for protection.
  12. Clean the liftgate glass, and then secure double suction cup handles onto both sides of the liftgate glass.
  13. Cut a suitable length of square wire to use with T-handles.
  14. Attach the square wire into the T-handle.
  15. Secure the wire to the starter tool and push the tool through the urethane at the upper left side of the liftgate glass.

    Carefully push starter wire tool in between the liftgate glass assembly and CHMSL.
  16. Remove the square wire from the starter tool and secure the wire into one T-handle.
  17. Remove wire starter tool from the vehicle.
  18. With an assistant, use the T-handles to cut the urethane that attaches the liftgate glass to the liftgate.

    If wire is getting caught on CHMSL, an equalizer can be used to separate the CHMSL from the liftgate glass.
  19. Remove the tape from body.

    Inspect the body and liftgate assembly for any nicks that may need touch up paint.
  20. Use a blade scraper to remove the urethane bead from the liftgate assembly.
  21. Remove the CHMSL from the liftgate glass.
  22. Carefully remove any adhesive residue from the liftgate glass.
  23. Carefully remove remaining urethane from the liftgate glass.

Install

  1. Inspect the liftgate glass for any damage that is not reworkable.

    Replace the liftgate glass if there is any damage that cannot be rectified.
  2. Use an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe to clean the CHMSL mounting location on the liftgate glass.

    Allow the surface to dry for at least one minute.
  3. Use an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe to clean the urethane path on the liftgate glass.

  4. Use an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe to clean the urethane path on liftgate assembly.

  5. Print out the CHMSL template and cut it out.

  6. Place the CHMSL templates on the upper corner of the liftgate glass, and then secure the template with tape.
  7. Remove the red tape covers from the CHMSL.
  8. Position the CHMSL to upper corners of template, and then apply pressure to the CHMSL to adhere the 3M tape to liftgate glass.
  9. Remove the CHMSL templates from liftgate glass.
  10. Use tape to secure the CHMSL harness to the liftgate glass.
  11. With an assistant, position the liftgate glass onto the vehicle for a dry fit.
  12. Check the gap and flushness of the liftgate glass and take note of any needed adjustments.
  13. With an assistant, remove liftgate glass from the vehicle.
  14. Apply urethane primer to the liftgate glass along the urethane path.

    Allow the primer to dry for 2 minutes.
  15. Apply urethane primer to the liftgate body along the urethane path.

  16. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane.

    Opening must be 8mm wide and 14mm tall.
  17. Apply urethane to the liftgate body following the primer patch.

    Fill any gaps in the urethane to ensure a consistent bead.
  18. With an assistant, install the liftgate glass onto vehicle.
  19. Check the gap and flushness of liftgate glass and make adjustments as necessary.

    Use tape to hold the glass in place. Allow the glass 10 minutes of dry time before opening the liftgate.
  20. Remove the suction cups from the liftgate glass.
  21. Open the liftgate.

    Allow for dry time.
  22. Connect the RH antenna RF filter electrical connector.
  23. Connect the RH antenna amplifier electrical connector.
  24. Connect the CHMSL electrical connector.
  25. Connect the LH antenna RF filter electrical connector.
  26. Connect the LH antenna amplifier electrical connector.
  27. Install the upper liftgate grim. See Trim - Upper - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  28. Install the liftgate speaker grille. See Grille - Speaker - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  29. Install the lower liftgate trim. See Trim - Liftgate - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  30. Install the rear trunk load floor. See Trunk Load Floor - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  31. Install the rear trunk parcel shelf. See Parcel Shelf - Rear Trunk (Remove and Replace).
