Windshield (Remove and Replace)

CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.

CAUTION
New glass components (windshield, roof, door, and fixed glass) must be inspected before installation to meet Tesla’s internal standards of quality. Perform the inspection described in Pre-Installation Glass Inspection before beginning this procedure.

Remove

  1. Remove the windshield from the vehicle. See Windshield (Remove and Install).
  2. Remove the suction cups from the windshield assembly.
  3. Use a blade scraper to remove the old urethane from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tape from the exterior of the LH and RH A-pillars.

Install

  1. Clean the windshield as needed. Take special caution to the forward-facing camera area to ensure a clear view of the forward-facing camera. See Clear Forward Camera View (Precision Cleaning Of Inboard Windshield).
  2. With an assistant, position the windshield assembly onto the vehicle for a dry fit and note any locations where the pads need to be adjusted.

    Verify datums align properly. Ensure the heater grid harness is taped onto the glass to avoid contact with the urethane pathway and body.
  3. Remove the glass from the vehicle.
  4. If necessary, perform the pad adjustment.
  5. Clean the urethane path on the vehicle with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe. Allow the surface to dry before continuing to the next step.

    Ensure the inside of glass is clean and smudge free near the VIN plate as it won't be accessible once installed.
  6. Apply urethane primer to the windshield and vehicle body along the urethane path and in areas that were damaged during removal of the windshield assembly.

    Allow the primer to dry for at least 2 minute.
  7. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane.

    Opening must be 8mm wide and 14mm tall.
  8. Apply urethane to the windshield following the original path.

    Make sure that the urethane bead has a triangular cross-section of approximate width 8 mm and height 14 mm.

    Fill any gaps in urethane to ensure consistent bead
  9. With an assistant, install the new windshield assembly onto the vehicle, but do not set it yet.

    Make sure to align the datums at top of the windshield.
  10. Check the gap and flush of the windshield assembly to the body before fully seating the windshield assembly.
  11. Fully seat the windshield assembly, check the gap and flush, and adjust if necessary.

    If needed, a ballast bag can be used to hold the windshield down as it cures.
  12. Apply tape to secure the windshield to the body while the urethane cures.
  13. Remove the suction cups from the windshield.
  14. Install the cowl screen panel. See Panel - Cowl Screen (Remove and Replace).
  15. Install the LH and RH wiper arms. See Wiper Arm - LH (Remove and Replace).
  16. Install the LH and RH shock tower covers. See Cover - Shock Tower - LH (Remove and Replace).
  17. Install the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace).
  18. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  19. Close the hood.
  20. Install the front portion of the headliner into position, and then secure the clips (x5).
  21. Connect the humidity sensor electrical connector.
  22. Connect the heated camera area electrical connector.
  23. Connect the triple camera electrical connectors (x2).
  24. Install the screws (x4) that attach the mounting plate to the windshield and allow the camera to hang by the harness.
    0.8 Nm (7 lbs-in)

    Note
    Make sure the wire harness is routed correctly.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T10 bit
  25. Position the triple cam hood onto the windshield, and then secure the clips (x2) that attach hood to the windshield.
  26. Connect the harness electrical connector to the humidity and temperature sensor on the windshield.
  27. Connect the harness electrical connector for the GPS/GNSS antenna.
  28. Connect the harness electrical connector for the fan.
  29. Install the upper quad camera cover. See Upper Cover - Rear View Mirror (Remove and Replace).
  30. Install the rear view mirror. See Mirror - Rear View (Remove and Replace).
  31. Install the passenger sun visor. See Sun Visor - LH (Remove and Replace).
  32. Install the RH upper A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  33. Install the RH IP end cap. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  34. Remove the RH middle A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  35. Repeat step 31 through step 34 for the LH side of the vehicle.
  36. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle.
  37. In Toolbox, click the Actions/Autodiag tab, and search for ‘Redeploy’.
  38. Click SERVICE CAN REDEPLOY, and then click Run and allow the routine to complete.

    Note
    Select ‘X’ at top right of window to close once complete. The routine will state pass but update will continue to run in the background. Allow the update to complete and do not power down the vehicle. There will be no UI message to indicate update has completed.
  39. Perform forward facing camera pitch verification. See Camera - Forward Facing (Pitch Verification).
  40. Reinstall the vehicle firmware. See Firmware Reinstall - Touchscreen.
  41. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  42. Remove the tape securing the windshield to vehicle once the urethane has cured.
