Fluid Coupling (55 Degrees) - Rear Drive Unit (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  4. Remove the mid aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Mid (Remove and Replace).
  5. Perform Vehicle HV Disablement Procedure. See Vehicle HV Disablement Procedure.
  6. Remove leather over gloves and HV insulating gloves.
  7. Use a shop towel to cover the LH rear HV harness to prevent coolant contamination.
  8. Position coolant drain container underneath the LH rear of the vehicle.
  9. Release the spring clip, disconnect the powertrain supply hose from the rear drive unit, and then plug the hose and rear drive unit.
  10. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit 55 degree fluid coupling to the rear inverter, and then remove the coupling from the inverter.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 socket

Install

  1. Lubricate the 55 degree fluid coupling O-ring with coolant.

    CAUTION
    Do not install the fluid coupling with the O-ring dry.
  2. Install the rear drive unit 55 degree fluid coupling into the rear inverter, and then install a new bolt that attaches the coupling to the inverter.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 socket
  3. Remove the hose plugs, connect the powertrain supply hose to the rear drive unit, and then install the spring clip.

    Note
    Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure the hose is fully seated.
  4. Remove the coolant drain container from underneath the vehicle.
  5. Remove any shop towels from the LH rear HV harness.

    Clean away any excess residue.
  6. Verify that the black release lever of the rear drive unit HV harness connector is in the open position, install the connector flat and square to the HV battery LH HV header, secure the release lever to the closed position, and then slide the red connector locking tab.
  7. Secure the PRDU dummy plug to the HV battery, and then engage the locking latch.
  8. Install the mid aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Mid (Remove and Replace).
  9. Lower the vehicle fully.
  10. Remove coolant bottle cap.
  11. Inspect the coolant level and top off as necessary.

    Note
    Ensure that the fluid level is at the Max line.
  12. Connect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  13. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  14. In Toolbox, click the Actions/Autodiag tab, search for "Purge", click TEST_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-COOLANT-AIR-PURGESearch for routine in ToolboxCoolant Air PurgeDrive Inverter / Front Drive Inverter Replacement - Coolant Air PurgeDrive Inverter / Rear Drive Inverter Replacement - Coolant Air PurgeDrive Inverter / Rear Left Drive Inverter Replacement - Coolant Air PurgeDrive Inverter / Rear Right Drive Inverter Replacement - Coolant Air PurgeDrive Unit / Front Drive Unit Replacement - Coolant Air PurgeDrive Unit / Rear Drive Unit Replacement - Coolant Air PurgeThermal / Actions - Coolant Purge Stop or Coolant Purge StartThermal / Coolant System - Coolant Purge Start, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.

    Note
    Make sure the vehicle is not in drive state. Putting vehicle into drive state will stop this routine. Monitor the levels as required.
  15. Inspect the coolant level and top off as necessary.

    Ensure that the fluid level is at the Max line.
  16. Install the coolant bottle cap.
  17. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  18. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  19. Remove vehicle from lift

    Lower rack arms fully and remove them from under vehicle, Remove air suspension from "Jack Mode"
