Subframe Assembly - Rear (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Move the vehicle to a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  3. Release the electronic parking brake. See Park Brake Caliper - Release.
  4. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  5. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  6. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  7. Set the high voltage multimeter to DC voltage, lightly touch the probes to the auxiliary battery connector contacts, and verify that the multimeter displays a voltage.

    Note
    Battery voltage is typically 14.5 to 15.5 volts.
  8. Remove the rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  9. Remove the mid aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Mid (Remove and Replace).
  10. Perform Vehicle HV Disablement Procedure. See Vehicle HV Disablement Procedure.
  11. Remove the leather glove protectors and HV insulating gloves.
  12. Remove the rear fascia diffuser. See .
  13. Remove the LH and RH rear wheel arch liners. See Wheel Arch Liner - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  14. Remove the rear subframe. See Subframe Assembly - Rear (Remove and Install).
  15. Remove the bolts (x4) that attach the rear subframe brace to the rear subframe, and then remove the brace from the subframe.
  16. Release the clips (x2) and remove the bolt that attach the ground strap to the rear subframe, and then remove the ground strap from the subframe.
  17. Disconnect the rear subframe electrical harness from the LH ride height sensor connector.
  18. Release the clip that attaches the rear subframe electrical harness to the rear drive unit inverter, release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical harness from the rear drive unit inverter LV connector.
  19. Disconnect the rear subframe electrical harness from the RH ride height sensor connector.
  20. Release the clips (x2) that attaches the rear subframe electrical harness to the rear drive unit motor, release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical harness from the rear drive unit resolver connector.
  21. Release the gray tab, and then disconnect the rear subframe electrical harness from the rear drive unit oil pump connector.
  22. Release the clips (x12) that attach the rear subframe electrical harness to the rear subframe, and then remove the electrical harness from the subframe.
  23. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH ride height sensor arm to the LH upper fore link.
  24. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH ride height sensor to the rear subframe, and then remove the sensor from the subframe.
  25. Release the clips (x2) that attach the LH rear caliper electrical harness to the LH side of the rear subframe.
  26. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH upper aft link to the rear subframe.
  27. Remove bolt that attaches the LH rear upper fore link to the LH rear knuckle.
  28. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear toe link to the rear LH knuckle.
  29. Install the axle removal tool around the inner joint of the LH rear halfshaft.

    Note
    Make sure that the cable loop is not wrapped around the inner boot.
  30. Use the slide hammer to release the LH rear halfshaft from the rear drive unit.
  31. With the help of an assistant to support the weight of the LH rear knuckle in subsequent steps, remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear lower aft link to the knuckle.
  32. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear lower fore link to the LH rear knuckle.
  33. Remove the LH rear knuckle and LH rear half shaft from the rear subframe.

    Note
    Carefully guide the halfshaft ouf of the subframe, and do not bend or damage the heatshield.
  34. Remove the bolts (x8) that attach the LH upper fore link, the LH toe link, the LH lower fore link, and the LH lower aft link to the rear subframe, and remove the links from the subframe.
  35. Repeat step 23 through step 34 on the RH side of the rear subframe.
  36. Release the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain coolant return hose to the rear subframe.
  37. Release the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain coolant supply hose to the rear subframe.
  38. Position the subframe lift underneath the gantry.
  39. Use the shackles (x3) to attach the drive unit sling tool to the rear drive unit.
  40. Attach the drive unit sling tool to the gantry.
  41. Use the gantry to raise the drive unit sling tool so that there is slight tension in the cables.
  42. Remove the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the LH side of the rear subframe.
  43. Remove the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the RH side of the rear subframe.
  44. Remove the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the rear of the rear subframe.
  45. Use the gantry to raise the drive unit sling tool and carefully lift the rear drive unit out of the rear subframe, routing the HV harness and coolant hoses as needed.
  46. Release the strap at the front and two straps at the rear of the subframe lift, and then with the help of an assistant, remove the rear subframe from the subframe lift.

Install

  1. With the help of an assistant, install a new rear subframe onto the subframe lift and then attach one strap at the front, and two straps at the rear of the subframe lift to secure the subframe to the subframe lift..
  2. Use the gantry to lower the drive unit sling tool and carefully set the rear drive unit into the rear subframe, routing the HV harness and coolant hoses as needed.
  3. Lower the rear drive unit sling tool so as to install and hand tighten the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the rear of the rear subframe.
  4. Install and hand tighten the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the RH side of the rear subframe.
  5. Install and hand tighten the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the LH side of the rear subframe.
  6. Lower the drive unit sling tool to release tension in the cables, and then remove the sling tool from the gantry.
  7. Remove the shackles (x3), and then remove the drive unit sling tool from the rear drive unit.
  8. Move the subframe lift out from underneath the gantry.
  9. Tighten the rear drive unit mount bolts (x3).
    120 Nm (88.5 lbs-ft)
  10. Fasten the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain coolant supply hose to the rear subframe.
  11. Fasten the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain coolant return hose to the rear subframe.
  12. Install the LH upper fore link, the LH toe link, the LH lower fore link, and the LH lower aft link to the rear subframe, and then install the bolts (x8) that attach the links to the subframe.
    85 Nm (62.7 lbs-ft)
  13. With the help of an assistant to support the weight of the LH rear knuckle in subsequent steps, install the LH rear lower aft link to the knuckle, and then install the bolt that attaches the link to the knuckle.

  14. Install the LH rear lower fore link to the LH rear knuckle, and then install the bolt that attaches the link to the knuckle.

  15. Install the LH rear halfshaft into the rear drive unit, and then firmly press the halfshaft into the drive unit so that the halfshaft is fully seated.

    An audible click is heard when the halfshaft is fully seated and the C-clip is fully engaged.
  16. Install the LH rear toe link to the LH rear knuckle, and then install the bolt that attaches the link to the knuckle.

  17. Install the LH rear upper fore link to the LH rear knuckle, and then install the bolt that attaches the link to the knuckle.

  18. Install the LH upper aft link to the rear subframe, and then install the bolts (x2) that attach the link to the subframe.
    85 Nm (62.7 lbs-ft)
  19. Fasten the clips (x2) that attach the LH rear caliper electrical harness to the LH side of the rear subframe.
  20. Install the LH ride height sensor to the rear subframe, and then install the bolt that attaches the sensor to the subframe.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
  21. Install the LH ride height sensor arm to the LH upper fore link, and then install the bolt that attaches the sensor arm to the link.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
  22. Repeat step 12 through step 21 for the RH side of the rear subframe.
  23. Install the rear subframe electrical harness to the rear subframe, and then fasten the clips (x12) that attach the electrical harness to the subframe.
  24. Connect the rear subframe electrical harness to the rear drive unit oil pump connector, and then fasten the gray tab.
  25. Connect the rear subframe electrical harness to the rear drive unit resolver connector, fasten the locking tab, and then fasten the clips (x2) that attach the electrical harness to the rear drive unit motor.
  26. Connect the rear subframe electrical harness to the RH ride height sensor connector.
  27. Connect the rear subframe electrical harness to the rear drive unit inverter LV connector, fasten the locking tab, and then fasten the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the rear drive unit inverter.
  28. Connect the rear subframe electrical harness to the LH ride height sensor connector.
  29. Install the ground strap to the rear subframe, and then install the bolt and fasten the clips (x2) that attach the ground strap to the subframe.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
  30. Install the rear subframe brace to the rear subframe, and then install the bolts (x4) that attach the brace to the subframe.
    120 Nm (88.5 lbs-ft)

  33. Install the rear fascia diffuser. See .

  35. Install the rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  36. Connect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  37. Engage the electronic parking brake. See Park Brake Caliper - Release.
  38. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  39. Perform a cooling system air purge. See Cooling System (Partial Refill and Bleed).
  40. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  41. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  42. Remove the vehicle from the 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  43. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
